Both of the veteran sluggers played in both halves of Thursday’s doubleheader against the White Sox, so it makes sense that manager Oli Marmol would want to give them a breather. Alec Burleson will cover first base while Nolan Gorman will start at the hot corner and will bat cleanup for the Cardinals on Friday evening against the Reds.

Saggese has put together an outstanding season at the Triple-A level, hitting .317 with five homers and five steals across 42 games before returning to the big leagues ahead of Friday’s series opener. The 23-year-old middle infield prospect went 1-for-4 at DH on Friday night. He’ll help fill the void left at the spot with slugger Iván Herrera facing a multi-week absence with a hamstring strain. He’s a name to watch in deeper mixed leagues if he’s able to carve out a semi-regular role.

Pallante kept the ball on the ground tonight, and the nine hard-hit balls he surrendered produced only one double and one single. It was still just a 1-0 game when Pallante departed, but the Cardinals scored five runs the next inning to settle things. The win was Pallante’s first in six starts. He’s currently 5-3 with a 4.48 ERA overall, and he’s slated to face the Cubs next week.

Exit velocity has never been Walker’s issue, but it was all weak contact from him tonight; his three balls in play were two popups and one grounder, all hit softer than 70 mph. He’s 3-for-15 with no extra-base hits since coming off the injured list Sunday, and although the Iván Herrera injury has lessened the playing time crunch in St. Louis, the Cardinals have to be weighing burning his last option year and sending him down.

Burger heads to the injured list after exiting Friday’s contest against the Pirates with left side tightness. The 29-year-old first baseman underwent imaging that revealed an oblique strain. He’s going to be out for at least a couple weeks, even if it’s of the mild variety. It’ll likely be some combination of versatile Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran taking over at the cold corner in his absence with Justin Foscue coming up from the minors to take his roster spot.

Encarnacion-Strand, who is hitting .262 (11-for-42) with three homers and seven RBI in 11 games since returning from the injured list earlier this month, has begun to cede playing time to Spencer Steer at the cold corner with Santiago Espinal getting additional run at third base. He’s gone ice-cold since homering in three straight games after returning from the injured list back on June 6.

Torkelson has been scuffling in recent weeks, hitting .198 (21-for-106) with five homers and 14 RBI over his last 30 games. He’s slid into a deeper tailspin of late, batting .083 (2-for-24) over his last seven games. The positive angle here is that he’s not striking out at an astronomical rate. However, the Tigers have a capable alternative in Colt Keith, especially against right-handed starters, which is why he’s getting the nod to face Rays starter Ryan Pepiot on Saturday afternoon instead.
