Contreras went 0-for-3 on Friday afternoon following a one-game absence after being hit by a pitch earlier this week on the left hand. It’s an encouraging sign heading into the weekend that he’s in St. Louis’ lineup for the second consecutive game against his former club and isn’t dealing with any lingering swelling or pain.

It looks to be nothing more than a routine night off for the speedy 24-year-old outfielder. Scott has done a decent job for the Cardinals this season, slashing .235/.319/.323 with four homers, 28 RBI and 22 stolen bases across 299 plate appearances. Garrett Hampson will draw a rare start in center field in his stead and will bat ninth against Cubs’ southpaw Matthew Boyd.

No surprise here after Arenado was scratched from Saturday’s lineup with a right shoulder impingement. The 34-year-old defensive wizard will undergo further evaluation on Sunday to determine the severity of the issue, but there’s optimism from the club that he’ll avoid a trip to the injured list. It’ll be rookie Thomas Saggese drawing another start at the hot corner in his place. There should be a definitive update on his outlook at some point leading into Tuesday’s series opener against the Nationals.

The Cardinals scored five times off Brad Keller in the eighth, with Pozo delivering the big blow after hitting for Pedro Pagés. Pozo is batting .329/.333/.506 with three homers in 81 plate appearances since being called up Apr. 7. The Cardinals love Pagés’ defense too much to make a switch behind the plate, but at least they’ve been willing to make the late-game change when they need offense.

Hoskins’ MRI revealed a Grade 2 left thumb sprain. There had been hope that Hoskins could play through the injury but that unfortunately will not be the case. Expect a roster move to be made on Monday. The expectation is that Jake Bauers will see the bulk of the action at first base while Hoskins is shelved.

Hoskins will get a breather, as expected, during Sunday’s game with Jake Bauers handling the cold corner. The 32-year-old first baseman left Saturday’s game against the Marlins with left thumb discomfort and could wind up getting a few additional days off this coming week. He’s officially day-to-day for the moment.

He also singled. He could have added to the Tigers’ margin for error in the ninth, but up with the bases loaded and one out, he grounded into a double play against Tim Herrin. The homer off Logan Allen was Torkelson’s third in five games this month and 20th overall.
