    Zebby Matthews

Zebby Matthews (shoulder) faced hitters on Tuesday in a live batting practice session.

Matthews is getting close to heading out on a rehab assignment as he continues to make steady progress with his throwing program. The 25-year-old pitching prospect has been out since June 8 recovering from a shoulder strain. He’ll need a handful of minor league outings before he rejoins Minnesota’s rotation mix, but he’s on track to potentially make it back before the end of July.

Luke Keaschall (forearm) took live batting practice on Tuesday at Target Field.

Keaschall was off to an excellent start in the majors before suffering a right forearm fracture that sent him to the injured list back in late April. The 22-year-old top prospect should be ready to kick off a minor league rehab assignment at some point in the coming days. He should make it back to Minnesota’s lineup by the end of July, if not sooner.

Byron Buxton will compete in next week’s MLB All-Star Home Run Derby.

Buxton made the announcement on his Instagram page on Monday afternoon. The Georgia native becomes the fourth confirmed participant, joining Braves icon Ronald Acuña Jr., Mariners mashing backstop Cal Raleigh and Nationals burgeoning star James Wood. The 31-year-old center fielder has crushed 20 homers already this season and is on pace to threaten the 40-homer plateau for the first time in his career.

Pablo López (shoulder) should begin his throwing program soon.

Twins athletic trainer Nick Paparesta said that “things are progressing nicely” for López, who was placed on the IL with a Grade 2 Teres Major strain retroactive to June 4. The inflammation in his shoulder is now totally gone, but the Twins are being cautious not to rush him back. “We need to do the best thing we can for him for the long term and not just worry about the short term,” said Paparesta. “Strengthen him up and make sure his range of motion gets back to where we want it to be. Then look to get him into some throwing activity next week.”
