Rivera was designated for assignment on Monday so the Red Sox could get down to their 40-man roster limit. It makes some sense that the Cardinals would want him, since Chaim Bloom used to be the chief baseball officer in Boston and still has connections to personnel there. Rivera is a 23-year-old with a big fastball, but he will now be on his third organization and has yet to establish consistent production. It’s not a bad gamble for the Cardinals to take. Garcia is an 18-year-old right-hander who pitched to a 4.40 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 39/10 K/BB ratio in 43 innings in the Dominican Summer League this year.
Rivera was designated for assignment on Monday so the Red Sox could get down to their 40-man roster limit, but instead of being a free agent, he will head to the Cardinals. It makes some sense since Chaim Bloom used to be the chief baseball officer in Boston and still has connections to personnel there.
The 23-year-old Rivera pitched four times for the Red Sox last season, giving up seven runs in 10 innings. He’s rather wild and he’s not viewed as having a ton of upside, but he could be at least a nice innings eater in middle relief, and since he has two option years left, some team is going to want him.
So this is why Rivera went on the restricted list on August 17th? The 23-year-old is going to be out for the remainder of the season, but this move allows the Red Sox to open up a 40-man roster spot for Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Rivera had two really nice games for the Red Sox this season and two poor ones. He posted a 2.59 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 71/30 K/BB ratio in 55 2/3 minor league innings this season. It remains to be seen if the Red Sox will treat him as a starter or reliever this offseason.
No word on the reason for the move, but Rivera is currently on the injured list at Triple-A Worcester. The 23-year-old lefty has allowed seven runs over 10 innings in the big leagues this season.
No surprise here. Rivera heads back to the minors after surrendering four runs and recording just two outs during the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Orioles. It’ll be Alec Gamboa sticking around as long relief depth for Boston after serving as the club’s 27th man for the twin bill.
Rivera was wild and just not good at all, but he probably would have gotten out of the first unscathed if not for Caleb Durbin making a bad call on a grounder to third with one out. Durbin could have ran to third for a forceout or thrown to first, but he instead tried for an unlikely double play and didn’t get any outs. Rivera struck out the next batter, but then just couldn’t get a third out afterwards. He might head back to Triple-A after this.
It’s been pouring in Boston for most of the afternoon and the decision was made not to take any chances. It’ll be made up as a doubleheader on Wednesday instead. There’s a chance that Ranger Suarez (groin) will be activated to take the ball during the twin bill, but that isn’t official yet. It was going to be Eduardo Rivera starting on Tuesday night in his place. Orioles starter Kyle Bradish will be pushed back to the doubleheader.
Rivera retired the first two batters he faced to start the top of the first inning, but proceeded to allow the next three batters he faced to reach base. Jonny DeLuca made the most of the bases-loaded opportunity when he singled to drive home Ryan Vilade and Junior Caminero to put the Rays up 2-0. Rivera would make it through the second inning unscathed, but was pulled in the third after allowing a solo homer to Junior Caminero to tie the game at 3-3. Rivera would be pulled immediately after allowing the homer to Caminero, marking his shortest outing of the season. He hasn’t gone more than 3 2/3 innings in any of his three starts. If he gets another outing in the rotation, it will most likely come on Wednesday against the Orioles.
Pitching in Worcester, Rivera hadn’t gotten more than seven outs in an outing in over two months, making today’s performance particularly impressive. He nearly got through four innings hitless, but Jorge Polanco singled off him on the 10th pitch of his second at-bat to end his day. Rivera will likely head back to Triple-A now, but he definitely helped his stock.
Rivera draws the starting assignment for Saturday’s game against the Mets in place of an injured Ranger Suarez. The 23-year-old tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings during a relief appearance for the Red Sox back on April 22. He’s posted a strong 2.44 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 62/24 K/BB ratio across 48 innings at the Triple-A level this year. He’s an interesting young arm, but too risky to trust for fantasy purposes, despite a tasty road matchup against the Mets.
Brayan Bello will remain in Triple-A for now. Rivera made his MLB debut in April, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief in his one appearance. He’s been working in relief in Triple-A, so he’ll likely throw only a couple of innings in his start. Brett Harris figures to be sent down.
Rivera threw 3.1 scoreless innings in his one appearance last night, but the usage made him the obvious pitcher to send down as the Red Sox called up Peyton Tolle to start on Thursday. Rivera should make a return engagement to the Red Sox in the near future.
Rivera arrives in the big leagues shortly after being promoted to Triple-A Worcester earlier this week. The 22-year-old lefty provides Boston with some additional long relief depth while they deal with injuries and depth issues in their starting rotation mix. He’s unlikely to offer enough volume to make an impact for fantasy purposes before he’s shipped back to the minors.
Yes, Rivera is a starting pitching prospect, but all signs are that he will not be filling Sonny Gray’s (hamstring) spot in the rotation, but instead will be used for length out of the bullpen. The Red Sox bullpen has been taxed early in the week, with Gray getting hurt and Connelly Early failing to complete six innings on Tuesday. Rivera should be able to throw multiple innings in one of the games against the Yankees before the Red Sox need a starter in Gray’s spot over the weekend. Rivera is just 22 years old but was somehow cut by the Athletics midway through the 2024 season. Last season for Boston, he posted a 2.48 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 108/46 K/BB ratio in 87 innings split between High-A and Double-A. He was off to a strong start in two appearances for Double-A this season and will likely join the Red Sox rotation in Triple-A after this brief call-up.
The 22-year-old looked great in two starts at Double-A this season, allowing one run on six hits in 10 innings with a 16/3 K/BB ratio. However, this says more about the Red Sox’s lack of starting pitching depth. With Sonny Gray (hamstring) on the injured list, and all of Kutter Crawford, Johan Oviedo, Tanner Houck, and Patrick Sandoval on the injured list, the Red Sox don’t have many starting pitching options at Triple-A. Payton Tolle is likely being called up to the big leagues to take Gray’s spot in the rotation, which leaves Jake Bennett and Tyler Uberstine as the only true starting-pitcher options at Worcester. The Red Sox will hope not to have to turn to Rivera as an option this season, but he’s now one step closer.
The 22-year-old Rivera was signed by the Red Sox in May 2024 after being released by the A’s and had a 2.48 ERA and a 108/46 K/BB in 87 innings over 15 starts and five relief appearances between high-A and Double-A this season. He’ll probably return to Double-A to begin next year.
