Muñoz winds up with a spot on Houston’s 40-man roster heading into the offseason after being picked up from the Reds in the Rule 5 Draft last year. The 26-year-old reliever made just four appearances for the Astros before being shipped to Triple-A for the rest of the year in early April.
He was a Rule 5 pick, but apparently the Reds did not accept him back after losing him. Muñoz will look to rebuild his value in the Space Cowboys’ bullpen.
Muñoz allowed seven earned runs in three appearances with the Astros this season. He was a Rule 5 pick, so if Muñoz clears waivers, he will be offered back to the Reds before becoming a free agent.
Muñoz was the lone major league veteran chosen today. The Reds claimed him from the waivers from the Cardinals last month, non-tendered him and then re-signed him to a minor league contract. Since he wasn’t on the 40-man, that made him eligible to be swooped up here, and the Astros decided it was worth it. Muñoz has a 6.73 ERA in 17 starts and 10 relief appearances as a major leaguer. Used exclusively as a reliever for the first time last season, he struck out 76 in 57 2/3 innings for the Cardinals’ Triple-A club. He’ll probably battle for a spot in Houston’s pen.
Muñoz sticks around with the Reds as extra relief depth after being non-tendered last month by the club. The 25-year-old was scooped up off waivers from the division-rival Cardinals earlier this offseason after posting an underwhelming 6.73 ERA over 93 2/3 innings across 27 appearances (17 starts) in the big leagues since the start of 2024.
The dregs of the 40-man. Muñoz was picked up on waivers from the Cardinals earlier this month, Spiers was just DFA’d on Tuesday and Banfield spent a little time late in the year helping out while Tyler Stephenson is out. The Reds will probably try to re-sign all three to minor league deals.
Muñoz will remain in the NL Central after posting a lackluster 8.18 ERA across 11 innings over nine appearances this past season with the division-rival Cardinals. The 25-year-old righty holds a bloated 6.73 ERA over 93 2/3 innings across 27 appearances (17 starts) in the big leagues since the start of 2024.
