It’s a new injury designation for Wirfs, so it seems likely that the ailment occurred during Wednesday’s practice. The Buccaneers already have offensive line issues, and anyone who saw the Bears ravage the Seahawks’ offensive line knows what that unit is capable of. It could be a long day for Baker Mayfield if Wirfs can’t go.
Wirfs sustained a hamstring injury during the first week of Bucs training camp. The team has been cautious with their superstar offensive lineman ahead of the season, and we should expect that to continue in the weeks ahead of the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Bengals. Baker Mayfield has struggled when the Bucs have had offensive line injuries over the past couple seasons.
Wirfs went down with a hamstring issue during the first week of camp. By the sound of it, he will miss several weeks of practice. For a six-year veteran, that’s not a major issue, as long as he is ready to go by Week 1 and doesn’t suffer any setbacks. Health permitting, the Bucs should have one of the league’s best offensive lines this year.
Wirfs did not practice with the Bucs on Wednesday as he recovers from the hamstring issue. The team will surely be cautious with their all-world offensive lineman as the regular season approaches. Wirfs in 2025 had one of the NFL’s highest pass block win rates (96 percent) and has been a key to Baker Mayfield’s success in Tampa.
Wirfs has been battling a turf toe injury but makes his return to the active roster just in time for a must-win game against the divisional rival Panthers with a potential playoff spot on the line. The Buccaneers need to beat the Panthers and have the Saints beat the Falcons to back their way into the postseason. Also active is Godwin after the veteran receiver was added to the injury report earlier Saturday with an illness. Inactive for the Buccaneers are QB Connor Bazelak, CB Jamel Dean, G Elijah Klein, OLB Anthony Nelson, WR Sterling Shepard, and DL Elijah Simmons.
This is the second time this week that Wirfs’ status has changed. On Tuesday, he was reportedly set to resume practicing. Instead, he was listed as a non-participant on the official injury report. Earlier today, Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles told reporters that Wirfs would be listed as questionable for Week 18. He is now good to go after practicing twice in a limited capacity. The Buccaneers (7-9) no longer control their own destiny. In order for them to make the playoffs, they must beat the Panthers (8-8) on Saturday and they need the Falcons (7-9) to lose to the Saints (6-10) on Sunday.
Bucs head coach Todd Bowles told reporters Wirfs’ status before the official injury report is out. We suspect Wirfs was limited in practice today. He missed Tuesday’s practice but was back on the field for some light work yesterday. The Bucs need a win on Saturday and an Atlanta loss on Sunday to win the NFC South and secure a playoff berth. We suspect Wirfs will push to play in the must-win game.
Wirfs has a chance to face the Panthers on Saturday. The winner takes the NFC South’s crown and punches a ticket to the postseason. Wirfs’ return to practice is very encouraging. His presence makes a difference for QB Baker Mayfield, who is currently dealing with injuries in both his knee and throwing shoulder.
So much for him re-appearing! In all honestly this isn’t a big deal, and the fact that reporters mistook him for practicing is probably still a good sign for his chances of suiting up in Week 18’s must-win against the Panthers. Most veteran offensive linemen are allowed to play with little practice, and as long as Wirfs finds the field on Wednesday or Thursday he should be considered likely to go.
The Buccaneers face a must-win game to keep their playoff hopes alive on Saturday afternoon. Wirfs missed last week’s game with this toe injury. The fact that he’s already practicing, even if this does wind up being a limited session, points to him playing. And the Buccaneers need every ounce of healthy talent they can get for this game given the way their late season has been going.
The Bucs declared Wirfs out with a toe injury; they will likely lean on Graham Barton to shift over to left tackle in Wirfs’ absence. Also out is Anthony Nelson (knee), who did not practice this week. Sterling Shepard is a healthy scratch with the Bucs’ receiving group now fully healthy.
The injury is not believed to be a long-term issue, but a DNP today puts Wirfs at risk of missing Week 17. If he can’t go, Graham Barton would likely move from center to left tackle to fill Wirfs’ spot in the lineup. Barton made three starts at left tackle to open the year while Wirfs was sidelined.
The Bucs are getting healthy just in time for a playoff push. Wirfs practiced in full today and is good to go. Mike Evans appears to be on the right side of his questionable tag as well. Baker Mayfield and the Bucs’ offense have repeatedly flopped over the past month. If they are ever going to turn things around, tomorrow’s game against Atlanta would be the time to do it.
Wirfs missed Week 14 against the Saints with an oblique injury. He is listed as a limited participant for both Monday and Tuesday as head coach Todd Bowles said the franchise left tackle could play Thursday against the Falcons. Another practice on Wednesday will give us more confidence that Wirfs will be back protecting Baker Mayfield’s blindside in Week 15.
Wirfs missed last week’s game with an oblique, but he was questionable and got in a limited practice on Friday of last week. He was limited in practice today, which is a great sign for his return. But Tuesday and Wednesday should be days where his participation trends up or stays level if the Buccaneers are serious about Wirfs playing against the Falcons.
It’s a big blow for the Bucs on a rainy day in Tampa, though it at least comes in a soft Saints matchup. Wirfs tried to give it a go, so he will probably be on the right side of questionable for Week 15. Also inactive for the Bucs are QB Connor Bazelak, OG Elijah Klein, S Kaevon Merriweather, CB Benjamin Morrison and DL Elijah Simmons.
The same is true of rookie corner Benjamin Morrison, who is dealing with a hamstring injury. Wrifs got in one limited practice this week before being listed as questionable. He was always going to be a long-shot to play after missing the first two practices of the week. The fact that he returned on Friday at least indicates that he could be back for Week 15 versus Atlanta. Graham Barton moved from center to left tackle when Wirfs missed time at the start of the year. The Bucs will likely make that move again this week.
Wirfs did not practice either of Wednesday or Thursday, but got in a limited session on Friday and is likely trending towards playing. The fact that he’s questionable isn’t encouraging, but most offensive linemen that practice eventually wind up playing on Sunday. Wirfs would be a huge loss for the Buccaneers if he weren’t able to go.
Wirfs will make his season debut following knee surgery in the summer. The Bucs have reportedly been careful with Wirfs in his recovery from the knee injury. He should be a full go today against the Eagles. It’s a positive development for Baker Mayfield against a vicious Eagles front seven. Pro Football Focus grades Tampa’s pass protection as the 11th worst in the NFL over the season’s first three weeks.
The Bucs have seemed to have this date circled for some time, amd Wirfs has thankfully hit the bullseye. His return comes as Baker Mayfield is banged up with a biceps issue and Mike Evans is sidelined with a hamstring ailment. Although Chris Godwin (ankle) is also returning, Wirfs’ presence could potentially lead to an increased focus on the Bucs’ struggling running game as the passing game nurses its ill health.
