It was a day of frustration and missed opportunities for the Los Angeles Dodgers in St. Louis. Despite racking up nine hits, the offense couldn't push a single run across the plate, falling 5-0 to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The loss highlighted a concerning trend for the star-studded lineup, as they left 10 runners stranded and were shut out for the eighth time this season.
The Dodgers went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and were shut out for the eighth time in 2025.
The story of the game was the Dodgers' inability to capitalize. Sonny Gray was masterful for the Cardinals, but LA had its chances. The most glaring missed opportunity came in the third inning when Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts both singled, putting two on with one out. But Gray buckled down, striking out Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández before getting Max Muncy to fly out, ending the threat and setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Mookie Betts did his part, going 3-for-4, and Andy Pages added a pair of hits, but the clutch hits from the heart of the order never materialized.
While the offense sputtered, there was a significant silver lining on the mound. Rookie left-hander Justin Wrobleski, recalled from Triple-A just before the game, delivered a career-best performance. Pitching six full innings for the first time in his young MLB career, Wrobleski showed poise and grit. He was tagged for a two-run homer by Pedro Pagés in the second and a two-run single in the fifth, but eating up six innings was a huge boost for the club. In a game with few positives, Wrobleski's outing was a promising development for the Dodgers' pitching depth.
The day began with a flurry of roster moves. Veteran reliever Chris Stratton, recently released, was re-signed as a free agent and immediately activated. He pitched the eighth inning, unfortunately serving up a solo home run to Willson Contreras. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Ryan Loutos was designated for assignment. In a corresponding move, Landon Knack was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City to clear a spot for the recalled Wrobleski.
It was a frustrating day in St. Louis, no doubt about it. But one game doesn't define a season. The Dodgers will look to salvage the series finale on Sunday, and the key will be simple: get the big hit. With this much talent, the offense is bound to break out. Let's hope it starts tomorrow and this trend of being shut out becomes a distant memory.
