A four-game sweep in Yankee Stadium was just out of reach. The Angels couldn't complete the mission on Thursday, falling 7-3 to the Yankees in the series finale. While the loss stings, the Halos' power was on full display as Mike Trout, Jo Adell, and Taylor Ward all launched solo home runs, providing all the offense in a game where hits were otherwise hard to come by.
Despite launching three home runs, the Angels were held to just five total hits in the 7-3 loss.
The long ball was the Angels' only weapon on Thursday. Mike Trout continued his hot hitting, smashing his 12th homer of the season—a 423-foot blast that the team's social media rightly celebrated. Not to be outdone, Jo Adell and Taylor Ward also went yard off Yankees starter Carlos Rodón. It was an impressive display of power that showed what this lineup is capable of. The problem? Those were three of the team's only five hits. Outside of the homers, the offense struggled to build any momentum, leaving the team unable to answer when the Yankees strung together rallies to snap their six-game losing streak.
On the mound, Tyler Anderson put in a warrior's effort. After giving up a pair of homers in the second, he settled in before taking a sharp comebacker off his lower right leg in the sixth. In a show of pure toughness, Anderson shook it off and finished the inning. He ended his day with six innings pitched, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. While he was tagged with his fifth consecutive loss, it was a gritty performance that saw him battle through adversity to eat valuable innings.
With the road trip in the rearview mirror, the Angels head home to Anaheim for a crucial series against a division rival. The team announced that left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (2-6, 3.05 ERA) will get the ball for Friday's opener against the Houston Astros. It's a chance to build on the momentum of a successful series win in New York and make a statement in the AL West.
While dropping the finale and missing the sweep is a tough pill to swallow, the Angels walk away from the Bronx having won the series 3-1. The power is clearly there, and Tyler Anderson showed incredible grit. Now, the focus shifts to a pivotal weekend homestand against the Astros, where the Halos will look to turn those home run trots into a winning streak.
