He allowed only three hits, a double to Nico Hoerner and singles from Hoerner and Michael Busch, and walked none. It’s his 63rd career 10-strikeout game and 47th start of at least six scoreless innings. It also went as his 99th career win in 256 starts. A Jung breakthrough, were it to materialize, figured to take the form of a 30-homer season with maybe a .270 average. Instead, he’s hitting .331 at the moment, having cut his strikeout rate from 25 percent last year to 15 percent right now. He’s been fine with his five homers, too, but his .196 isolated slugging percentage is a little lower than his .201 mark from 2023, his one successful year to date. His 5.3 percent barrel rate lags way behind his career mark of 10 percent. Still, it’s definitely working for him.

Gage Workman is replacing him on the roster. Carpenter was hurt Saturday while running into the side wall down the right field line on Bobby Witt Jr.'s inside-the-park homer. The Tigers will probably give Colt Keith more time at DH with Carpenter out, which would open up starts for Workman at third. Wenceel Pérez is also in line for some extra at-bats as a right fielder.

Workman spent time in the majors as a Rule 5 pick last year, going 3-for-14 with the Cubs and 0-for-2 with the White Sox, but he ended up being returned to the Tigers in May. He went unpicked in the latest Rule 5 draft over the winter, but now he’s getting another look after hitting .358/.413/.590 with four homers and 12 steals in 150 plate appearances for Toledo. After seeing considerable time in the outfield last year, he’s been strictly an infielder this season, starting 15 games at short, 11 at second and eight at third for Toledo. With Colt Keith likely to spend more time in the DH spot while Kerry Carpenter is out, the Tigers figure to give Workman starts at second and third against righties.

As you can imagine, Leiter’s command was not the best in this one, throwing just 55 percent of his pitches for strikes. However, he also induced 12 whiffs with a 12 percent swinging strike rate and was efficient in two-strike counts with a 57 percent PutAway Rate. It wasn’t a crisp outing, but Leiter made the pitches that he needed to in order to get out of trouble and showcased the ability of a strong fantasy starter. The command just really needs to be cleaned up. He’s a risky option next week against the Astros.

Madden also struck out five and walked two while posting a 29 percent CSW and a 60 percent strike rate overall. Madden was really efficient in two-strike counts, thanks to a slider and cutter combination that each had a 17 percent swinging strike rate to right-handers. Interestingly, his slider was over two mph slower than his last outing, with almost three inches more drop. The pitch was really effective today, so perhaps some tweaks are happening here. All of the damage against Madden came in one inning when he allowed a single, a walk, and a three-run home run. We would still be really cautious with him next week against the Blue Jays.

On the one hand, Gore wasn’t particularly good today in striking out three, walking three and giving up nine hard-hit balls. But on the other hand, perhaps no pitcher this season has been let down more often by his defense than Gore was today. He gave up two triples in the first that a quality right fielder might have gotten to. The Rangers, though, were playing Joc Pederson in right in his first outfield start in three years. Later, Gore saw an infield popup drop because Josh Jung, who had his shades on the bill of his cap, lost it in the sun. Gore still allowed just the one run through five, when it was Alejandro Osuna’s turn to flop. He got an awful break on a flyball single in front of him and then took a lousy route to Trent Grisham’s three-run double with the bases loaded. With just competent outfield play, Gore would have allowed one or zero runs over six innings today. He’ll face the Diamondbacks next.

Eovaldi absolutely has the Yankees’ number. Coming off a seven inning, seven strikeout, zero run gem against the last time out he managed to one up himself here. They barely ever threatened with just three hits and he didn’t walk a batter either. The only run he allowed came via an Aaron Judge solo homer and it was the first time he’s completed eight innings since… last August against the Yankees. That’s almost too crazy to be true. Nevertheless, Eovaldi’s splitter was dancing here and he’s finally been able to corrail it over these last two starts when his command of it was spotty over the first month of the season. His curveball was sharp here too, forcing eight of his 19 total swings-and-misses. Also, a new wrinkle he’s shown so far this year, he’s begun to lean more into his cutter against left-handed batters. It’s all been working and he’ll look to ride this positive momentum into a two-start week against Diamondbacks and Astros coming up.

Valdez had just given up back-to-back home runs to Willson Contreras and Wilyer Abreu and then immediately put a fastball between Story’s numbers. When the umpires conferred and ejected him, Valdez simply nodded once and walked off the mound without any objection.
