    Brewer Hicklen

    DET • CF • #

Brewer Hicklen collected the first two hits of his big league career on Thursday evening as the Tigers triumphed over the Rockies.

The 29-year-old outfielder was recalled prior to the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader and made the most of his opportunity. He reached on an infield single in the third inning that loaded the bases, then came around to score on a three-run double by Gleyber Torres. Hicklen singled to center in his next at-bat and swiped second base before being stranded there. He’s probably heading back to Triple-A Toledo after the game so the team can activate John Brebbia from the injured list on Friday, but for at least one day Hicklen got to feel like a true big leaguer.

Gleyber Torres delivered a bases-clearing double in the third inning on Thursday night, propelling the Tigers to an 11-1 victory over the Rockies and to a sweep of their three-game series.

Torres three-run double off of Tanner Gordon broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish. It was his only hit in five at-bats on the evening. The 28-year-old infielder has been outstanding so far for the Tigers, slashing a healthy .290/.348/.460 with four homers, 20 RBI and four stolen bases through his first 25 games.

    Recap

Colt Keith crushed the longest home run of his career on Thursday night as the Tigers clobbered the Rockies at Coors Field.

The 23-year-old slugger blasted a 1-1 slider from Tyler Kinley for a 450-foot (109.2 mph EV) two-run blast in the seventh inning that extended the Tigers’ lead to 8-1. He also singled in the ninth inning, finishing the night 2-for-5. For the season, Keith has struggled to a .215/.348/.366 slash line to go with four homers and 11 RBI.

    Keider Montero

    Recap

Keider Montero delivered an outstanding performance in Thursday’s victory over the Rockies, surrendering only one run on five hits over eight frames.

The 24-year-old right-hander walked three batters while striking out two in the ballgame. the only run that scored against him came as Owen Miller drove in a run with a fielder’s choice in the second inning. Montero has been the guy the Tigers rely on anytime they have a doubleheader or need to give their starters an extra day of rest, and so far that has led to him posting a 4.15 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and a 15/10 K/BB ratio over 21 2/3 innings in his first four starts. He should get another opportunity at some point in the next couple of weeks.

    Injury

Derek Hill went 1-for-2 with two RBI and walked twice Thursday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Jacksonville.

Hill has missed the last three weeks with a sprained wrist, but he could be activated this weekend. Ronny Simon and Graham Pauley are the candidates to be demoted to make room for him.

    Daulton Varsho

    Recap

Daulton Varsho picked up three hits, three RBI and a homer in a win over the Angels on Thursday.

Varsho has only played in seven games this year, but they’ve been seven good ones. He’s homered three times already, and his slugging percentage is a remarkable — and entirely unsustainable — .727 over 22 at-bats. Varsho has been a mediocre offensive player in his two seasons with the Blue Jays, but it’s possible at the age of 28 he’s having a breakout campaign. Far from a guarantee, but possible.

    Michael Harris II

    Recap

Michael Harris II drove in two runs while going 3-for-5 with a triple in an extra-inning win Thursday over the Reds.

Harris II tripled in a run in the fifth, and he came up huge with an RBI single in the ninth that tied the contest at 4-4. The 24-year-old was due for a solid game, as he still is hitting a lackluster .229/.245/.354 at just under the quarter point of the season. It was Harris’ first multi-hit game since April 26. Expect Harris II to go on a run soon, but even with this solid game, fantasy managers have a right to be disappointed with the production.
