Freeman is playing through the injury, but Roberts noted that the infielder won’t be able to run 100 percent. The 35-year-old has been in the lineup every day for close to two months since returning from the injured list, and as long as there’s no setback, it sounds like he’ll be able to play through this ailment.

Knack walked three and struck out eight, while giving up two extra base hits, including a solo home run. The 27-year-old has struggled in the big league rotation this year, and with Emmett Sheehan (elbow) close to a return and Ben Casparius now moved into the rotation, it seems like we may not see Knack get another big league start for a while.

The struggling Hernández had gone 17 games without a homer before taking Jeremiah Estrada deep in the sixth inning. The ball left his bat at 108.6 mph and traveled a projected 420 feet. It was his only hit of the game to go along with two strikeouts and two routine flies, but hopefully it will get him going. He had been 3-for-38 with one RBI since May 31.

Although he settled for two strikeouts and just two missed swings, Casparius was able to get 12 outs on 54 pitches in his longest outing this season. If the Dodgers keep stretching him out, he’ll probably offer some mixed-league value, even if his ERA seems likely to increase in the rotation. He has a 2.86 ERA and a stellar 46/9 K/BB in 44 innings to this point. Unless something changes, he’ll face the Padres again next Monday or Tuesday.

Vaughn will remain in the minors and report to Triple-A Nashville. If he starts tearing it up there, perhaps the Brewers would consider making some room for him by playing Christian Yelich in the outfield, but they’ll cross that bridge when they come to it. Vaughn hit just .189/.218/.314 in 48 games for the White Sox before being demoted, though his exit velocity numbers were actually a little better than his career norms. He’d hit .211/.328/.351 in 15 games for Triple-A Charlotte. Given his current $5.85 million salary, he’ll need to experience a real breakthrough to avoid being non-tendered this winter.

Toglia is hitting .324/.366/.676 with three homers and 14 RBI in nine games since being sent down by the Rockies and seems to be well on his way to earning another opportunity. After all, as bad as Toglia was in hitting .190/.260/.342 in the majors this season, that’s still considerably better than what the Rockies have gotten from their other first basemen. They have a combined line of .167/.189/.283 in 74 plate appearances.

Goldschmidt had the decisive hit, a liner to first that went off Vinnie Pasquantino’s glove. Pasquantino picked up the ball and belatedly tried for the out at first, which led to Pablo Reyes attempting to score from second on the play. Reyes, though, stumbled around third, nearly falling down, and should have been a dead duck, except Lucas Erceg botched the throw home for a run-scoring error. In truth, it could have been two errors on the play, since Goldschmidt’s liner was only 93 mph off the bat and really should have been caught. Since the run came on the error, this was a rare contest with zero runs batted in.
