No word yet on what the Phillies will receive in return, though it’ll probably just be cash after Clemens had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. The 28-year-old is a career .197/.244/.367 hitter with 14 homers and 48 RBI in 376 at-bats at the big league level.

The next step for him will be to throw a bullpen session on Sunday at Wrigley Field. The Phillies seem optimistic that Sánchez will be able to avoid a trip to the injured list, however he will not make his scheduled start on Tuesday. Zack Wheeler will get the ball on Tuesday on regular rest, with the rest of the rotation to be determined after that, depending on how Sunday’s session goes for Sánchez.

Walker experienced some shoulder stiffness in leaving his last start early, but the exit today was a result of him needing 86 pitches to get his nine outs. He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out four before departing. If Cristopher Sánchez proves healthy, Walker will likely soon move to middle relief to make room for Ranger Suárez in the rotation. First, he’ll probably get one more start against the Nationals next week.

Harper is in a little 1-for-15 slump in his last four games, though it hardly seems like anything to worry about. He’s currently on pace for 31 homers, which seems realistic, and 37 steals, which would be eight more than he had from 2022-24 combined.

Clemens jumps directly to Minnesota’s active roster in the wake of top prospect Luke Keaschall suffering a fractured right forearm during Friday’s series opener against the Angels. The 28-year-old infielder was removed from Philadelphia’s roster earlier this week after going 0-for-6 in limited action. He’s merely emergency bench depth at this stage of his career.

It’s unclear if the hot-hitting Smith is going to sit against all left-handers, but him getting a breather with Sale on the mound makes complete sense. Randal Grichuk will function as the team’s designated hitter on Friday night and will bat third for the D’Backs.
