Carpenter smacked a two-run double off of Jack Kochanowicz in the second inning that extended the Tigers’ early lead to 3-0. He then walloped a 1-0 sinker from Michael Darrell-Hicks for a 413-foot (106.8 mph EV) three-run blast to center field in the sixth inning, making it an 8-0 ballgame. With his three-hit attack, the 27-year-old slugger is now slashing a robust .295/.316/.554 to go with eight home runs and 19 RBI on the season.

Sweeney also drew a walk, so it was a five-reach game for the 25-year-old shortstop without getting out. The former first-round pick was able to double twice while also drawing a pair of singles on top of the free pass. The 25-year-old has picked up four hits in back-to-back games, and Sweeney’s slash has improved from .206/.292/.304 to .261/.344/.396 in the process.

Báez remains hot, and his two-run single in the third inning tied the game at 5-5. It was his second two-run single of the game, and it ups his season total to 18. He also scored a run, and Báez is now slashing an excellent .313/.352/.475 in what has easily been his best season with the Tigers. That’s quite the understatement.

The pitching matchup between two young potential aces in Jobe and Chase Dollander saw both starters allow six runs. Jobe allowed eight hits, and two of those hits were homers; both of the two-run variety. The 22-year-old gave up just six runs in his four starts in April with a 2.70, so hopefully this is just a blip on the radar in a tough stadium to pitch in. Jobe gets the Red Sox with a chance to rebound Monday.

Soler also singled and walked, but the big blow was obviously the bases-clearing double that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead off Jeff Hoffman. That gives the veteran slugger eight doubles on the season to go with 16 RBI. Soler has not been spectacular with the bat over the first 35 games of the season and had just two hits coming into May before Wednesday’s game, but the 33-year-old is always capable of fireworks, even if they are often followed by long stretches of disappointment.

Not only was Abreu productive, but he was also clutch. His first long ball tied this game at two. Then, his run-scoring double tied it at three and nearly gave his Red Sox the lead before Kristian Campbell was thrown out at home. His eighth inning home run was less dramatic, just adding insurance to the lead. A funny note though, this was the third multi-homer game of Abreu’s career and all three have come against the Rangers. Nevertheless, his strong start has blended nicely into a tremendous season and the Red Sox would be hard-pressed to take his .980 OPS out of the lineup any time soon.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters he’s hopeful O’Neill will return for this weekend’s series against the Angels out in Los Angeles. The 29-year-old slugging outfielder, who has been out since late April with neck inflammation, went 2-for-6 in a pair of rehab contests.
