    Trey Sweeney

    Trey Sweeney

    DET • SS • #

Trey Sweeney went 4-for-4 and scored two runs in an extra-inning win over the Rockies on Wednesday.

Sweeney also drew a walk, so it was a five-reach game for the 25-year-old shortstop without getting out. The former first-round pick was able to double twice while also drawing a pair of singles on top of the free pass. The 25-year-old has picked up four hits in back-to-back games, and Sweeney’s slash has improved from .206/.292/.304 to .261/.344/.396 in the process.

    Recap

Javier Báez drove in four runs while helping the Tigers to an 8-6 win over the Rockies in 10 innings Wednesday.

Báez remains hot, and his two-run single in the third inning tied the game at 5-5. It was his second two-run single of the game, and it ups his season total to 18. He also scored a run, and Báez is now slashing an excellent .313/.352/.475 in what has easily been his best season with the Tigers. That’s quite the understatement.

    Recap

Jackson Jobe allowed six runs over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Wednesday.

The pitching matchup between two young potential aces in Jobe and Chase Dollander saw both starters allow six runs. Jobe allowed eight hits, and two of those hits were homers; both of the two-run variety. The 22-year-old gave up just six runs in his four starts in April with a 2.70, so hopefully this is just a blip on the radar in a tough stadium to pitch in. Jobe gets the Red Sox with a chance to rebound Monday.

Tigers activated OF Manuel Margot from the 10-day injured list; sent him outright to Triple-A Toledo.

Detroit was able to sneak Margot through waivers and keep him in the organization without taking up a 40-man roster spot. They’re going to roll with Javier Báez in center field for now and he’s looked fantastic in his first opportunity at the position. The 30-year-old outfielder will remain stashed at Triple-A Toledo as emergency depth.

    Recap

Trea Turner went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI on Wednesday against the Rays.

Has Turner’s power finally returned? His 107.8 mph home run was the third hardest ball he’s hit all season and his fourth inning single was hit harder than 100 mph as well. Other than the power, he’s had an excellent season to this point with a .307 batting average and eight stolen bases as a key cog in the heart of the Phillies’ talented lineup.

    Recap

Jacob Wilson finished 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles as the Athletics’ leadoff man Wednesday.

Wilson supplanted Lawrence Butler today, and it doesn’t seem like he’ll make his way down from the top of the lineup anytime soon, though he could always bat second, rather than first. The four hits today pushed his average up to .357, good for second in the majors. Unfortunately, he did experience a rare strikeout against Andrés Muñoz in his fifth at-bat, ending the game with the tying run on first.

    Jeremy Peña

    Recap

Jeremy Peña had a three-run homer, a double and four RBI as the Astros blasted the Brewers 9-1 on Wednesday.

Before coming through today, Peña hadn’t scored or driven in a run in five games this month. The four-RBI game is his second as a big leaguer, with the other coming in a 17-4 win on July 29, 2023. Moving into the leadoff spot figured to be a boon for his fantasy value, but it hasn’t really worked out that way so far. For one thing, he hasn’t attempted a steal in 10 games as a leadoff man. He was 5-for-5 in steals over his first 22 games, but 0-for-0 in 14 games since.
