Alvarez, who has hit third three times and fourth once in the last four games, continues to lose playing time due to Juan Soto being confined to DH duties for the time being. Luis Torrens is starting against RHP Miles Mikolas and the Nationals. Alvarez has slumped badly of late, with just three hits since April 18. His OPS is down from .894 to .691 since then.

He also walked. Both hits were infield singles, somehow. Alvarez has been the one hitter actually playing well for the Mets so far, now carrying a .294/.410/.549 line with four homers. He’s actually fourth in baseball in xWOBA at this point, and he’s steadily getting pushed up the lineup after hitting ninth most of the year -- he hit fifth for the second straight day today. He has some high-ceiling upside runouts at the catcher position.

It’s the first DH appearance for Alvarez this year, both telling of how good he’s been at the plate (.300/.400/.633 in 37 plate appearances so far) and how bereft of depth the Mets are without Juan Soto. Jorge Polanco will get the day off.

The hard-hitting backstop tagged Giants’ starter Tyler Mahle for a 415-foot (106.1 mph EV) solo shot in the fifth inning that increased the Mets’ lead to 5-0. He then victimized JT Brubaker for a 401-foot (107.0 mph EV) after an eight-pitch battle to open the seventh inning. He has been a productive option for fantasy purposes thus far, hitting .286 (6-for-21) with three long balls and three RBI.

He was also hit by a pitch. Alvarez’s homer, the second of back-to-back shots with Carson Benge, left the bat at 109 mph and was projected at 429 feet. Because of the depth in the Mets lineup, Alvarez was hitting ninth today. There’s a lot of power potential here if he can avoid injuries, especially those to the hands that have plagued him in his young career, but batting ninth will hold him back somewhat until he can overtake No. 7 hitter Marcus Semien or maybe move up to fifth if Luis Robert Jr. struggles or gets hurt.

It’s an encouraging sign to see Alvarez back in action after Mets manager Carlos Mendoza downplayed concern following his starting catcher’s early exit from Thursday’s spring contest due to back tightness. The 24-year-old slugging backstop should be a full-go for next week’s season opener.

Mendoza said Alvarez will “go through a workout today and swing the bat, and if all goes well, the plan is still for him to be back in the starting lineup tomorrow.” Looks like the Mets and fantasy managers avoided any real trouble here.

Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters after the game that Alvarez was lifted for precautionary reasons and that if had been the regular season he would have continued playing. While it doesn’t sound like anything to worry about, he will be re-evaluated on Friday. It’s at least something that fantasy managers should keep an eye on.

No word yet from the Mets on what exactly is going on, but Alvarez was pulled during the top half of the fourth inning after he was slated to play the entire game. It’s possible that he may have tweaked something on a swing while striking out during his first at-bat. Stay tuned, as the Mets should have an update on his status shortly.

Alvarez’s homer was an 111.5-mph missile, and he also had the game’s second hardest-hit ball with his 106.7-mph single. He’s off to a 6-for-11 start this spring.

This would seem to be a no-brainer, but it’s nice to hear. Alvarez went back to his old batting stance after his demotion last year and then returned to the Mets to slash .276/.360/.561 with eight home runs and a 25 percent strikeout rate in 40 games to finish the season. Alvarez is just 24 years old and also came into camp 10 pounds lighter this season. He has had terrible luck with hand injuries over the last few years, but there could be a major buying opportunity here in fantasy baseball leagues.

Alvarez’s minor league demotion last year pushed back his free agency until after the 2029 season, but he still qualified for arbitration as a Super Two player. Despite dealing with injuries, the 24-year-old hit .256/.339/.447 over 76 games and showed some really impressive exit velocity numbers in the process. He might prove to be a top-12 fantasy catcher if he stays healthy.

Alvarez was magnificent down the home stretch for New York while playing through a sprained UCL in his right thumb that he suffered back in mid-August. The 23-year-old backstop figures to be a full-go for the outset of spring training.

The hero on Tuesday night, Alvarez found the Wrigley bleachers again with his 11th homer of the season. It soared 413 feet into the night sky, but wasn’t enough to help bring his squad back this time around. It’s been a tumultuous season for Alvarez that began with a fractured hamate bone, saw him demoted over the summer, and now playing through both a sprained thumb on one hand and broken pinkie on the other. Still, he’s up to a .260 batting average and .803 OPS on the season as it feels like he’s finally broken out.

After ball one to start the at-bat in the eighth, Alvarez took three very close pitches, with two of the calls going his way. If pitch four, a 2-1 fastball, had been called a strike, as it ought to have been, Alvarez probably wouldn’t have seen another fastball on pitch five. As is, he saw it well and sent it over the fence for his 10th homer in 72 games this season. The Mets also got homers from Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo tonight, and they moved back ahead of the Reds by one game, though they will lose the tiebreaker if the two finish with the same record.

Alvarez, who has been a magnet for baseballs this season, was hit by a pitch on Tuesday and had to be removed from the game. He did return to the lineup on Wednesday, so this is likely just the Mets giving him a day off with a day game after a night game. Luis Torrens will start behind the plate.

Alvarez can’t seem to catch a break. The 23-year-old backstop, who is already playing through a broken finger and UCL sprain in his thumb, was in a significant amount of pain after being drilled by a pitch on the left arm. He’ll presumably head for further evaluation and possibly X-rays to determine the severity of the issue. An update on his status should come shortly.

Alvarez managed a good game in light of the utter catastrophe happening with the Mets right now. He hit a 102 mph opposite field laser off Jacob deGrom to get them on the board after falling behind 6-0 in the first inning and chipped in another hit later on. He had three hard-hit balls in total and it’s amazing he can still find this type of power while playing with a sprained thumb on one hand and broken pinkie on his other.

Alvarez will spend the rest of the year playing through a sprained thumb and fractured pinky on his throwing hand. One would think that would take quite a toll on his offense, but we’ll see. He did have a grand slam for Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. Luis Torrens will return to a backup role with Alvarez back.

The 23-year-old backstop has been sidelined since August 18 due to a UCL sprain in his right thumb and a fractured pinky finger. He has played in minor league rehab games over the first half of the week without issue though and is ready to make his triumphant return to the big league roster. Fantasy managers can safely activate him for the weekend.

Describing major-league catchers as tough might be the understatement of the year. Alvarez, who is attempting to make it back from a UCL sprain in his right thumb, is back in the lineup to continue his minor league rehab assignment just a couple days after fracturing his left pinky finger when he was hit by a pitch. The fact he’s back behind the plate already is extremely encouraging as he tries to make it back to New York at some point in September.

Alvarez is still hopeful that he can catch before the end of the year, but keep in mind that the 23-year-old is also rehabbing from a UCL sprain in his right thumb. The backstop will likely be out of action for the foreseeable future, and it’s possible — but far from guaranteed — he’ll return later in September.

Ugh. Alvarez can’t catch a break. The 23-year-old backstop, who is attempting to play through a UCL sprain in his right thumb left his first rehab contest after being hit by a pitch on the opposite hand. He started at catcher and finished 1-for-2 with a double at the plate. He’ll presumably undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status at some point soon.

Alvarez will eventually require surgery to address a UCL sprain in his right thumb, but the Mets are optimistic he’ll be able to play through the issue for the remainder of the season. The 23-year-old backstop, who was in the midst of one of the best stretches of his career at the dish before getting hurt. He will be evaluated closely over the next few days as he resumes baseball activities. He should progress to a brief minor league rehab assignment later this week and return to New York by early September.

The move is now official. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters Alvarez will require thumb surgery, but there’s a possibility he can return and play through the injury for the rest of the season. The 23-year-old backstop will be re-evaluated in 10-14 days, according to a team statement. There should be a decision on his status at some point in early September. Luis Torrens will take over as New York’s starting backstop for now.

Alvarez underwent an MRI on his right thumb Monday, and while the results of that imaging are unknown — at least to the public — the Mets have reportedly seen enough to believe that the 23-year-old needs the next week-plus off. It’ll be Luis Torrens behind the dish more often than not while Alvarez is out.

Alvarez made an early exit from Sunday’s game against the Mariners after jamming his right thumb. He will undergo further testing to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status prior to Tuesday’s series opener against the Nationals.
