Brown’s inclusion represents the lone change for Chicago from their Wild Card Series roster against the Padres. The 26-year-old offers some additional long relief depth for the extended best-of-five series over Rogers, who was merely additional left-handed middle relief depth behind Drew Pomeranz and Caleb Thielbar at this juncture.

Brown loses his spot despite a reasonable 4.50 ERA and a nice 22/5 K/BB in 18 innings out of the pen since the beginning of August. Unless someone lands on the injured list, he won’t be eligible to return to the majors during the regular season.

Brown’s four relief appearances this month have produced a 3.29 ERA in 13 2/3 innings. He might get another one or two three-inning saves in routs, but there’s probably no fantasy value here unless Daniel Palencia gets hurt.

Even though he went without a strikeout, Brown outpitched Javier Assad after Assad came off the IL and was announced as the starting pitcher before the game. That’s a good thing, but he still might be in line to return to the minors when Jameson Taillon comes off the injured list.

Brown looked good in a relief role after Michael Soroka went down with an injury last week and will now get at least one start to make his case to stick in the Cubs’ rotation. Jameson Taillon is nearing a return from the injured list though which could relegate him back to the bullpen in short order.

Assuming that Soroka is IL bound, Brown made a strong statement tonight for stepping into his spot. He allowed just two hits and walked none in lowering his ERA to 6.04. The Cubs, though, aren’t going to need a fifth starter until next weekend, since they have this Thursday and next Monday off.

Brown got the nod today despite giving up seven runs as a bulk guy in his return to the majors Monday against the Royals and proved effective against another bad offense. He ended up striking out four and walking none in improving to 5-7 with a 6.22 ERA on the season. It could be his last start for a while, as the Cubs are likely to acquire some rotation help before the deadline. If not, he’d face the Orioles next weekend.

Brown figures to take the ball at some point during Monday’s bullpen game against the Royals for a bulk relief outing. It’ll be his first appearance back in the majors since a late-June demotion after posting a calamitous 6.13 ERA and 91/27 K/BB ratio across 79 1/3 innings (16 appearances, 14 starts) to open the season. He’s not a recommended streaming option for fantasy managers.

Brown earned a ticket back to the minors after getting lit up for eight runs over five innings on Tuesday in a loss to the Cardinals. The 25-year-old righty holds a disastrous 6.13 ERA and 91/27 K/BB ratio across 79 1/3 innings (16 appearances, 14 starts) this season at the big-league level.

14 of the 20 balls in play against Brown tonight were hard hit and most of them were in the air. He also wound up with just three strikeouts. The loss leaves him 4-6 with a 6.13 ERA and provides a pretty definitive answer as to who should be dropped from the Cubs’ rotation to make room for Shota Imanaga.

The 25-year-old right-hander struck out five opposing hitters on the night while giving out a pair of free passes. All of the damage done against him came on a two-run blast off the bat of Isaac Collins in the second inning. Brown settled in nicely afterwards though, finishing his day with three scoreless frames which gave the Cubs’ offense a chance to come through for him. Brown got seven swings and misses on 86 pitches on the night — six of them on his knuckle curve — while posting a CSW of only 21 percent. He’ll look to keep the good times rolling as he carries a 5.57 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and an 88/25 K/BB ratio (74 1/3 innings) into Sunday’s tilt against the Mariners.

All or nothing for Brown. In his last 11 appearances, he’s allowed zero or one runs four times and six of more runs for times. Although his ERA sits at 5.71, Brown deserves to keep starting for now. Still, even if he becomes more consistent, he’s likely going to wind up in the pen at some point during the second half. After all, he’s never thrown more than 104 innings in a season, and he finished at just 55 last year. He’s at 68 1/3 innings right now. He’ll likely face the Brewers on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old right-hander racked up seven strikeouts on the evening while allowing only one base on balls. After trading zeroes with Tarik Skubal through the first four innings, the Tigers scratched out a run against Brown in the fifth inning on an RBI single off the bat of Gleyber Torres. Spencer Torkelson then added a solo shot in the sixth. Brown generated 15 swings and misses on 92 pitches on the night — 10 of those on his knuckle curve — while posting a CSW of 29 percent. He’ll look to further improve upon his 5.37 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 78/20 K/BB ratio (63 2/3 innings) when he takes on the Phillies in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Drew Pomeranz worked a scoreless first as an opener. Brown then took over and allowed one hit and one walk while pitching through the seventh. The Cubs never scored until the bottom of the eighth inning today, so Brown was uninvolved in the decision. It’s the third time this season that Brown has pitched six scoreless innings. Unfortunately, he’s given up 36 earned runs in 38 1/3 innings over his other nine outings. There’s ample talent here, but Brown is not a quality starting pitcher just yet, and he still might be best utilized in the pen. He’ll face the Tigers next time out and might again work behind an opener.

It’ll be veteran lefty Drew Pomeranz opening Saturday’s contest at Wrigley Field as the Cubs attempt to solve some of Brown’s issues in the early stages of outings. The 25-year-old righty figures to be jettisoned from Chicago’s starting rotation once Shota Imanaga (hamstring) is ready to return in a couple weeks. He’s struggled to a bloated 6.39 ERA across 11 appearances (10 starts) this season and is not a recommended option for fantasy purposes.

Despite two pretty enticing matchups this week, Brown allowed 14 runs in nine innings across two starts. He now has a 6.39 ERA on the season and has yet to show a consistent third pitch to complement his fastball and curve. With Shota Imanaga nearing a return and Cade Horton showing more upside than Brown, it makes sense for the Cubs to move Brown into the bullpen. He could actually thrive as a late-inning reliever. Brown is scheduled to face these same Reds at home next week, but we’d avoid the headache in most fantasy leagues.

Of the 13 balls in play against Brown, nine were hard hit. He gave up two homers, a triple and a double among his seven hits. It’s going to be a little while longer before the Cubs have to make any rotation decisions, but Cade Horton will probably have a case for sticking around over Brown by the time Shota Imanaga reruns. Brown is 3-3 with a 5.44 ERA, and he’s due to face the Reds in Cincinnati next time out.

Brown issued two walks. Those led off the first and fourth innings, and the Giants went to score all three of their runs in those innings. Brown wasn’t hit hard, and the nine strikeouts were great. He just put himself into bad spots with those walks, and now he’ll take a 3-3 record and a 4.95 ERA into his next start, a favorable home matchup against the Marlins. He’ll be a streaming option in that one.

Brown didn’t need to be at his best with the Cubs providing football levels of offense, but he was awfully good. He scattered four hits, and he didn’t issue a walk with four strikeouts. The 25-year-old was shelled in his previous outing for six runs, but this was a reminder that there’s solid talent in his right arm. He’ll square off against the Giants next week; scheduled for Wednesday.

Brown had stranded four runners through three scoreless innings before unraveling in the fourth. The first five batters would reach on a hit batter and four straight singles. A sacrifice fly, base hit, and a double would make it a six-run inning against Brown before he was relieved with two outs. While the 25-year-old right-hander has flashed some upside with strikeout ability, he’s allowing too much traffic on the bases to sustain any success. He’ll end the day with a 6.04 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, and a 31/14 K/BB ratio across 25 1/3 innings. Brown is currently scheduled to make his next start against the Brewers in Milwaukee on Friday.

Brown certainly has the stuff to start, but the efficiency to give a team the kind of length it would prefer eludes him. He allowed three hits, walked four and struck out six before coming out with the Cubs up 6-1 today. With a more reasonable pitch count, he probably would have had an easy victory. Brown is due to face the Phillies next weekend.

Impressive, even before you consider the quality of opponent. Brown was “only” able to get nine swings and misses over 84 pitches, but he was still able to accumulate the five punchouts while scattering five hits. It’s easily his best start of the year, and a reminder that Brown was once considered one of the better pitching prospects in baseball. He’ll try and build on this effort and continue to lower his 5.09 ERA against the Diamondbacks next weekend.
