Benge will take his second consecutive turn as New York’s top-of-the-order table-setter after going 1-for-4 out of the leadoff spot during Friday’s series opener. The 23-year-old former top prospect has been ice-cold at the dish this season, hitting .158 (9-for-57) with one homer and five steals in 17 games. He’s shown some signs of life at the dish recently, but it’s going to take a couple positive weeks for his full-season numbers to climb back to respectability. There are zero long-term concerns here, but Benge is clearly going through some growing pains as he adjusts to everyday life in the majors.

Benge is still hitting just .151/.237/.226 on the season, but he has hit in five of his last six games, and with how the Mets are currently swinging the bats right now, that makes him a viable leadoff candidate. Francisco Lindor is batting third as the Mets try to shake out of a doldrum in which they’ve scored two runs or less in five of their last six games.

The 23-year-old rookie outfielder started each of the team’s first five ballgames but has now found himself on the bench for two straight contests against opposing left-handers. It looks like he’ll be stuck in the strong side of a platoon role for the time being. Benge has homered and stolen a pair of bases already for fantasy managers this season but has done so while hitting an anemic .158 (3-for-19) with three runs scored, one RBI and a 7/2 K/BB ratio. Tyrone Taylor will start in his place and bat ninth against Robbie Ray and the Giants on Thursday evening.

The Mets aren’t going to make any changes after scoring 11 runs during Thursday’s season-opening win over the Pirates and ace Paul Skenes. Benge clubbed his first career homer and walked twice during an impressive big-league debut. The 23-year-old top prospect should be rostered in all fantasy formats. It feels like only a matter of time before he’s hitting more towards the middle of New York’s lineup, but they’ll let him get used to the majors without any pressure at the bottom of the order.

It was a three-true-outcome day for Benge, as he struck out in his other two at-bats. The homer to right-center came off Justin Lawrence in the sixth. Benge was able to make the Mets this spring without ever homering, finishing up at .366/.435/.439 in 46 plate appearances in Grapefruit League action. Especially with him being due to sit against a lot of lefties, it’s hard to say if the homers and steals will be there to make Benge a viable mixed-league outfielder as a rookie. However, he should be a solid major league contributor with his OBP skills.
