Barnes worked three innings in Monday’s loss to the Phillies while allowing three runs. He’ll head back to help the Cubs replenish their bullpen depth, and likely will be a multi-inning option again at some point in 2026.

Barnes will add a fresh arm and length to the Cubs’ bullpen with Hunter Harvey (triceps) landing on the injured list on Sunday. The 30-year-old right-hander hasn’t appeared in a big league game since way back in the 2021 season with the Twins.

Barnes returned to major league baseball in 2025 after pitching in Korea for four seasons. He registered a 3.58 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 516/166 K/BB ratio in 553 innings in four seasons in the KBO. He signed with the Reds in August of 2025 and compiled a 7.13 ERA and 27/5 K/BB ratio in 24 innings at Triple-A. He will operate as organizational depth for the Cubs.

Barnes returns stateside after spending the last four years pitching for the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization. The 29-year-old lefty hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since making nine appearances (eught starts) for the Twins back in 2021.
