Burnes underwent Tommy John surgery in early June, so this is not an unexpected timeline. Shane Bieber was on a similar timeline last year before a setback delayed him, so fantasy managers can draft Burnes with the same confidence or expectations that they had for Bieber coming into the 2025 season.

The procedural move frees up a spot on Arizona’s 40-man roster for backup catcher Aramis Garcia. Burnes is set to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery and will likely be sidelined until the second half of the 2026 campaign. The 30-year-old ace was in the first season of a six-year, $210 million contract with the Diamondbacks.

Ugh. You knew that it was going to be bad when Burnes was sent for a second opinion and now we get the unfortunate diagnosis. The start 30-year-old right-hander will miss the remainder of the 2025 season and most of the 2026 campaign as well while recovering from the procedure. It’s just an absolutely brutal blow to both the Diamondbacks and to fantasy managers. Ryne Nelson should now have extra runway to stick around in the club’s starting rotation.

Ugh. The worst-case scenario was always a potential outcome once Burnes went for a second opinion on his elbow. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo confirmed the decision on Friday to reporters that Arizona’s ace will undergo reconstructive surgery. The 30-year-old right-hander, who is in the first season of a six-year, $210 million contract with the Diamondbacks, will miss the remainder of the 2025 season and most of the 2026 campaign as well while recovering from the procedure. Burnes, who was hurt during his start Sunday, is getting a second opinion on his elbow after initial tests failed to produce a definitive diagnosis. Ryne Nelson is taking his spot in the Arizona rotation. Burnes is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 11 turns this season. He missed one start last month due to shoulder inflammation.

Not ideal. Burnes, who was injured during his start Sunday, figures to be placed on the injured list prior to Tuesday’s game. Tommy Henry is expected to take his spot on the active roster, but Ryne Nelson is the obvious choice to replace him in Arizona’s rotation.

Lovullo also noted that Burnes will undergo an MRI exam on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. The Diamondbacks’ skipper also stated his level of concern as “more than minimal.” It’s a terrible break for the Diamondbacks and for fantasy managers who are likely to be without their ace for at least a couple of weeks and potentially longer. The Diamondbacks won’t have any additional updates until after Monday’s exam so fantasy managers need to have alternative options on hand for next week as it seems extremely unlikely that Burnes would be able to make his next scheduled start.

Burnes had been cruising along in this one, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 4 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He looked uncomfortable after allowing a two-out single to CJ Abrams in the fifth though, prompting a visit from the training staff and his eventual removal. Burnes had experienced a dip in velocity on his cutter before leaving the game. Look for the Diamondbacks to provide an update on his status shortly. All fantasy managers can do right now is wait and hope for the best.

He looked uncomfortable after allowing a two-out single to CJ Abrams in the fifth though, prompting a visit from the training staff and his eventual removal. It looked like it was something related to his side, but it’s difficult to speculate on what exactly occurred. Look for the Diamondbacks to provide an update on his status shortly.

Burnes coasted through five shutout innings until Henry Davis took him deep for a two-run homer in the sixth. He returned for a scoreless seventh, completing seven frames with six strikeouts. He was saddled with a no-decision after the bullpen failed to hold a four-run lead. The 30-year-old right-hander will look to continue his strong season when he takes a 2.72 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and a 57/25 K/BB ratio across 59 2/3 innings into a start against the Braves in Atlanta next Tuesday.

This was the type of start the Diamondbacks signed Burnes for. The 30-year-old didn’t appear to be bothered by his shoulder at all after missing his previous turn through the rotation, and he didn’t allow a single extra-base hit. The seven scoreless lowers his ERA to 2.95 while he improves his K/BB ratio to 38/21. He’ll take on the lowly Rockies with a great chance to improve those numbers next weekend.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Burnes made it through Wednesday’s session without any issues related to his right shoulder and remains on track to take the ball on Saturday against the Dodgers. It’s a positive development for fantasy managers, who will be monitoring his performance closely in the wake of a disappointing start to his Arizona debut.

Burnes added that he still needs to get through Wednesday’s bullpen session before he’s officially cleared to take the ball this weekend at Chase Field. The 30-year-old righty also revealed that he received a cortisone injection last Friday to address the inflammation in his right shoulder, which caused him to miss his last start. All signs point to him being ready to return later this week. Fantasy managers will be paying extremely close attention to his on-field performance after stumbling out of the gate to a lackluster 3.58 ERA and career-worst 20 percent strikeout rate through six starts in his Diamondbacks debut.

Lovullo added that Burnes threw from flat ground on Monday without any issues and is on track to make his next start on Saturday against the division-rival Dodgers. The 30-year-old fantasy ace has looked off over the last few weeks and had his latest start skipped due to right shoulder inflammation. He underwent an MRI last week that ruled out any structural damage. It’s undoubtedly a positive development for the Diamondbacks and fantasy managers that he’s feeling ready to take the ball later this week.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters that Burnes will miss his next scheduled start, but the team is hopeful that the 30-year-old will be able to avoid a stint on the injured list. Lovullo noted that Burnes has been feeling “fatigue” in his shoulder, so the team will hope that some rest can help him get back on track. Obviously, this is a situation fantasy managers have to pay close attention to.

Burnes generated 10 swings and misses while throwing 89 pitches; 54 of those landing for strikes. The right-hander allowed only three hits, and his defense did him no favors in what was one of his better efforts of the young campaign. Burnes takes a 4.05 ERA into a scheduled start against the Mets next week.

Three strikeouts, seven whiffs and a 21% CSW made for an effective yet rather uninspiring effort from Burnes. Normally one of the game’s best at limiting hard contact, Burnes’ exit velocity numbers look like something one would see from Juan Soto in the batter’s box. He currently has a 50% hard-hit rate. His worst mark in the last five year was 34%. At least today was better in that regard, with only eight of 20 balls in play being hard hit. Burnes’ velocity remains strong, and we’d expect him to get back to being a top pitcher at some point in the coming months. He just isn’t one right now.

Burnes gave up a pair of runs in the second inning, and then gave up a homer to Jackson Chourio in the sixth. The right-hander was better than his effort Sunday against the Nats (five innings, four runs), but he didn’t miss bats in either start with just five swing-and-misses generated during Saturday’s start. A frustrating beginning, but Burnes should be fine and obviously should be in fantasy lineups over the weekend against the Cubs.
