Bednar worked through some trouble for the second straight night in Texas. He was given a three-run lead to work with in the ninth for the save chance. After one quick out, an error put a runner on base before Danny Jansen tripled to bring home a run. Bednar then hit a batter, then allowed a base hit to cut the lead by one and put the tying run on second. He finally escaped with a ground-ball double play for his ninth save of the season.

Bednar was very lucky it was Joc Pederson at the plate when Jazz Chisholm Jr. booted a grounder to second with one on and no outs. The slow-footed Pederson was originally called safe with Bednar covering on the late throw, but after a very long replay, the call was reversed. Chisholm later committed what could have been his second error of the inning if not for the reversal, allowing Josh Smith to reach. Alejandro Osuna singled in a run afterwards, but Ezequiel Duran then grounded out to end the game. The save was Bednar’s eighth in nine tries.

Bednar made it look awfully easy in this one, needing just 11 pitches (eight strikes) to get Ceddanne Rafaela on a ground ball to third, Masataka Yoshida on a pop out to first and Willson Contreras on a bouncer to third. The 31-year-old hurler has been effective in the closer’s role for the Yankees this season, converting seven of his first eight save chances while posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and a 13/5 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings. Given the rest of the carnage around the league in the ninth inning, fantasy managers will gladly take what Bednar has provided.

After a few rough outings last week, Bednar has now picked up saves in back-to-back outings while striking out four of the seven batters he faced. The lefty allowed a leadoff walk to Carter Jensen to start the ninth inning, but followed that with a lineout by Lane Thomas and back-to-back strikeouts to end things. Bednar’s six saves on the season puts him in a four-way tie for the most of any pitcher to start the year.

Bednar was saddled with his first blown save of the season after failing to preserve a one-run advantage in extra innings. The 31-year-old stopper gave up a pair of hits to open the frame, which put the potential winning run in scoring position. He wound up taking the loss after Jonathan Aranda reached on a bizarre-looking fielder’s choice with two outs in the frame, which pushed the game-winning run across the plate.

Shea Langeliers’ double wasn’t able to score Nick Kurtz after a leadoff single, but the A’s did get the go-ahead run on a Brent Rooker sac fly. It’s Bednar’s first loss after he earned saves in each of his first five appearances this season. He’ll now probably be unavailable Thursday, since he also pitched Tuesday. That could mean a save chance for Fernando Cruz or Camilo Doval.

Bednar was summoned to protect a two-run lead in the final frame and required just 14 pitches (nine strikes) to slam the door. He struck out Jeff McNeil before getting Carlos Cortes and Nick Kurtz to fly out to end it. It was an encouraging rebound effort after a rocky outing over the weekend against the Marlins.

The Marlins scored two runs in the eighth to tie the game before the Yankees scored three in the bottom of the inning to rebuild a three-run cushion. It’s a good thing they did because Bednar had a rough inning. He allowed an infield single to start the inning and then later issued a walk and gave up an RBI single. He gave up yet another single, but it was sandwiched between two strikeouts, including one of Griffin Conine to end the game. It’s Bednar’s fourth save of the season, and while his 4.15 ERA leaves a little to be desired, he should likely be one of the better closers in fantasy this season.

This was a hairy save for Bednar. He came on in the eighth inning to try and clean up Camilo Doval’s mess and allowed two of those inherited runners to score. Then, the Mariners put up another run in the ninth and got the tying run to the plate before Bednar finally nailed it down. His velocity was down a tick across the board too, so keep an eye on that next time he’s out there.

Bednar’s five fastballs tonight averaged 96.3 mph, an exact match for where he was last year. He was at 94.6 mph during the spring, but he was already back up to 95.6 mph last night. He’s probably going to be a top-10 fantasy closer if he remains healthy.

Bednar walked Matt Chapman with two outs in the 3-0 game but then retired Rafael Devers to end things. Bednar’s velocity was down all spring, including in the WBC, but he was up to 96.3 mph on average with his fastball tonight. That’s back to within 0.7 mph of last year. He was at 94.6 mph in his five Grapefruit League appearances.

It appeared to be a scripted move, as the Yankees had a number of relievers they wanted to use in their Grapefruit finale. However, it might be notable that Bednar’s hardest of his five fastballs came in at 94.4 mph today. His velocity has been down all spring, which isn’t necessarily a major concern, but it’d be nice if he were headed in the other direction at this point. Today’s average of 94.0 mph with his fastball was down a bit from his previous spring average of 94.8 mph and a full three mph off his 2025 average of 97.0 mph. Still, Bednar has pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in Yankees camp, and he turned in four scoreless frames with eight strikeouts for Team USA in the WBC.

Bednar is receiving a $3.1 million raise in his last year before free agency. He finished last year as the Yankees’ closer after replacing Devin Williams, and it seems obvious at this point that he’ll keep the job going into 2026. He had a 2.30 ERA and an 86/19 K/BB in 62 2/3 innings for the Pirates and Yankees last season.

Bednar got the call for a multi-inning save with New York leading by three runs and facing elimination. He recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning without incident before returning to face the top of Toronto’s red-hot lineup in the final frame. He struck out George Springer and Nathan Lukes before coaxing a game-ending grounder from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The 30-year-old’s effort capped off an incredible performance by New York’s bullpen as they reeled off 6 2/3 scoreless frames after starter Carlos Rodón surrendered six runs over 2 1/3 innings to open the contest.

It was quite a different story for the Yankees bullpen in this one after a disappointing Game 1 performance with Fernando Cruz, Devin Williams and Bednar tossing three shutout frames. The 30-year-old stopper was brought in to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning and needed just 16 pitches to slam the door. He struck out Wilyer Abreu and Jarren Duran to open the frame before getting Ceddanne Rafaela to fly out to end it.

Bednar struck out two and walked one. In spite of a poor debut on August 1, Bednar finishes up with a 2.19 ERA in 24 2/3 innings for the Yankees. He had an excellent 2.30 ERA in 62 2/3 innings overall.

Bednar’s save was his 26th of the season. The 30-year-old right-hander retired the White Sox in order in the ninth inning while recording a strikeout. Bednar lowered his ERA to 2.37. He’ll likely enter 2026 with an inside track on the Yankees’ closer job.

Bednar took over with a two-run lead to protect to open the ninth inning. After getting Austin Martin to foul out to the catcher, he served up a solo homer to Trevor Larnach that pulled the Twins to within a run. That’s when he dug deep and got Kody Clemens on a ground ball to first and Royce Lewis on strikes to end it. Since joining the Yankees, Bednar holds a 2.75 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 28/6 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings while securing eight of his first 11 save chances.

Bednar was summoned to close out the game against the Red Sox with a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth. He got the job done on just seven pitches, inducing two fly outs and a groundout. The 30-year-old right-hander is up to 24 saves with a 2.38 ERA over 56 2/3 innings.

Bednar’s save was his 23rd this year and fifth with the Yankees. The 30-year-old right-hander struck out two batters and lowered his ERA to 2.43. Bednar is the clear favorite for saves over Devin Williams as the Yankees push towards the postseason.

Bednar’s save was his 22nd of the year and fourth since joining the Yankees at the trade deadline. The 30-year-old right-hander allowed one hit in an otherwise perfect ninth inning. Bednar seems to be the best bet for saves on the Yankees the rest of the way with Devin Williams now pitching in a setup role.

Three were via the K, while the other was a pop fly. It goes as Bednar’s first save since Aug. 16. The Yankees’ previous two saves had been in extra-inning games in which Bednar wound up with victories (once after a blown save and once after throwing two scoreless innings in a tie game).

Bednar had to deal with a lengthy delay early on, as Aaron Boone decided to take issue with Taylor Trammell’s bat after a double. Following a lengthy discussion, Trammell’s bat was confiscated but the double stood. The Astros went on to bring up Carlos Correa and Christian Walker as the tying runs with the bases loaded, but both struck out. Bednar was forced to throw 33 pitches, his high total in an inning (and second highest total in a game) this season, so he’ll probably be down Friday. Camilo Doval or Devin Williams might get a save chance then.

Bednar could not save this game for the Yankees after Cam Schlittler took a perfect game into the seventh inning. Luckily for him, his lineup picked him back up in the 10th and then Devin Williams wound up securing a save, albeit a rocky one. Bednar has now blown as many saves as he’s converted since coming to the Yankees. He’ll likely retain the role, but the door might be cracked open for Williams to siphon off a chance or two at some point.

Bednar now has two saves and a win over his last four appearances for the Yankees. The 30-year-old right-hander hasn’t been scored on in his last five appearances (6 1/3 innings) and has 12 strikeouts and only three walks in that time. Bednar appears to be the favorite for saves for the moment.

Camilo Doval opened the eighth with a two-run lead and wound up walking two, making a bad throw to second on a double-play ball and giving up an RBI single to Jose Altuve. Bednar came in with the bases loaded and one out and immediately walked Christian Walker after getting him 0-2, tying the game. However, he bounced back to strike out Yainer Diaz and Taylor Trammell. He then had an easy ninth after Trent Grisham’s homer gave the Yankees another lead. It’s Bednar’s second blown save for the Yankees, but no one will blame him for that. He’s pretty obviously the favorite for saves in the Bronx right now, at least until he messes up.

Bednar was the only one of the Yankees’ supposed big four in the pen not to have worked on back-to-back days, so he was the obvious choice to close today. However, Aaron Boone, who typically hates using relievers on three straight days, did have Camilo Doval ready to go in the ninth. Bednar remained in after getting two outs in the eighth and was left in even after a Corey Seager walk (which really should have been a strikeout) and a Marcus Semien single with two outs. Boone went to the mound at that point, but he stayed the course and Bednar struck out Adolis García and end the game. It’s probably correct to consider Bednar the favorite for saves in the Yankees pen at this point, even though Devin Williams will likely rebound once again.

It’s a tough landing spot from a fantasy perspective as Bednar is unlikely to close games for the Yankees with Devin Williams entrenched in that role for the time being. Expect the 30-year-old right-hander to function in a setup capacity alongside Luke Weaver and Camilo Doval in what is quickly becoming one of the most fearsome units in all of baseball.

The Pirates are getting catcher Rafael Flores and Edgleen Perez and outfielder Brian Sanchez in return. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman said the Rangers were the other finalist here. Those rostering Bednar surely would have preferred he go to Texas, since he’s not going to close in New York unless something goes wrong with Devin Williams. Dennis Santana becomes the Pirates’ closer, but probably not, as he’s almost surely on the move, too. We wouldn’t say there’s another Pirates reliever worth grabbing in mixed leagues right away, but Isaac Mattson seems like the most interesting pitcher in the bunch right now. Bednar is under control for 2026 and could be the Yankees’ closer next year if Williams departs in free agency.
