It was a remarkable bounce-back performance from Boyd, who managed to work into the fifth inning of a do-or-die affair for the Cubs after allowing just two runs in the opening contest of the best-of-five series. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw struck out six and allowed just two hits and three walks in this one as he and four relievers — Daniel Palencia, Drew Pomeranz, Brad Keller and Caleb Thielbar — combined on a three-hit shutout at Wrigley Field to keep Chicago’s postseason hopes alive.

There was never really much doubt. Boyd will be on four days’ rest after throwing 30 pitches and getting pulled in the first against the Brewers on short rest in Game 1. He’ll be opposed by Freddy Peralta, so it’s a rematch of the Brewers’ Game 1 victory.

Boyd gave up three straight doubles to begin the game, but he should have been out of the first having allowed only two runs if not for a Nico Hoerner error on what looked like a routine play. Boyd was removed after Blake Perkins made a 4-1 game with a single on the 11th pitch of his at-bat. On the plus side, that Boyd threw only 30 pitches should make it easy for him to come back on four days’ rest in Game 4.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that Boyd will take the ball on short rest to kick off the series after throwing 58 pitches over 4 1/3 innings on Tuesday against the Padres. He also warmed up in the bullpen during the ninth inning of Game 3 on Thursday, which could be treated as his usual side session. Either way, it would be surprising to see him work much deeper than he did on Tuesday when battling the Brewers on Saturday. The 34-year-old southpaw held a 7.84 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and a 5/8 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings in two starts against the Brewers during the regular season. He’ll be going up against Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.

Boyd dealt with plenty of traffic on the basepaths but managed to escape without any significant damage before turning things over to Chicago’s bullpen. He got some major help from shortstop Dansby Swanson, who made a pair of stellar run-saving catches to prevent a couple runs from crossing the plate. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw was lifted after giving up a one-out single in the fifth inning, throwing just 58 pitches (43 strikes) in the abbreviated outing. He finished with two strikeouts and only handed out one free pass.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell made it official that Boyd will take the ball for Tuesday’s series opener at Wrigley Field. It’ll likely be some combination of Shota Imanaga and Jameson Taillon to close out the three-game series with star rookie Cade Horton out with a rib injury until at least the late stages of a potential Division Series matchup.

Boyd closed his regular season with a much needed strong start. He kept the Mets’ right-handed hitters off balance all night with changeups in the strike zone when they seemed to be least expecting them. It results in tons of weak contact and very few dangerous balls put in play. Manager Craig Counsell still had a quick hook on Boyd though, pulling him with just 86 pitches and an 8-2 lead in the sixth inning as Pete Alonso came to the plate. Nevertheless, Boyd will end his excellent season with a 15-8 record and 3.21 ERA over 179 2/3 innings.

Boyd was given a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but it didn’t last long. He gave up a three-run in the bottom half of that first frame, and then walked in a run an inning later. It’s another mediocre effort from Boyd, who has allowed at least four runs in five of his last six starts. He’ll get the start Tuesday against the Mets in what could be his season finale; depending on how Chicago sets things up for their postseason run.

The 34-year-old southpaw also issued a pair of walks on the day while recording only one strikeout. Most of the damage done against him came in the opening inning as Christopher Morel slugged a three-run homer. Aside from that, Boyd allowed just a run-scoring single to Nick Fortes in the fourth. Fortunately his offense came to play and provided more than enough run support for him to earn a victory. He got six whiffs on 83 pitches on the afternoon, registering an underwhelming CSW of 19 percent. Now 13-8 on the season, he’ll bring a 3.05 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 146/39 K/BB ratio (171 1/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Boyd had just three strikeouts today, but he generated 15 whiffs and had a 31% CSW. Following a stretch of three straight games without one, this was his 17th quality start of the season. His record dropped to 12-8 with a 2.92 ERA, which is fine. Bizarre, though, is that the Cubs as a team are 13-15 in his starts. He’s due to face the Rays next.

The 34-year-old southpaw allowed one base on balls on the day while punching out five. The Rockies scratched out a pair of runs against him to tie the game in the third inning, then added another pair in the fourth as Braxton Fulford smacked a run-scoring triple and scored on a single off the bat of Orlando Arcia. Boyd generated 12 swings and misses on 91 pitches on the day — six on his fastball — while posting a CSW of 25 percent. He’ll look to get back on track as he carries a stellar 2.94 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 142/37 K/BB ratio (159 1/3 innings) into Saturday’s home tilt against the Nationals.

Boyd served up a solo homer to Wilmer Flores in the second inning. Two doubles and a base hit would bring two more runs in to score in the fifth before Matt Chapman took Boyd deep for a two-run blast in the sixth. That would end the day for Boyd at 92 pitches with eight strikeouts. The 34-year-old left-hander has posted an outstanding 2.82 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and a 137/36 K/BB ratio across 153 1/3 innings. He lines up for a start against Rockies in Colorado on Sunday.

Boyd drew the starting assignment for the front-end of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the sizzling-hot Brewers at Wrigley Field and managed to work into the sixth inning to collect his 12th win of the season. It won’t go down as a quality start, but it was good enough in this one. He gave up six hits, including a solo homer to Christian Yelich, with all the damage coming after the third inning. He finished with three strikeouts and also issued three walks. He’ll likely take the ball on Sunday against the Angels to close out a two-start week.

He had a shutout going until the seventh, when he walked leadoff man Davis Schneider and gave up a two-run homer to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Up to that point, he had faced the minimum on the day. Boyd dropped to 0-3 in his last four starts, though he has a decent enough 3.75 ERA during the span. He’ll face the Brewers next time out. They kicked off this current skid for Boyd by scoring five runs off him on July 28.

The 34-year-old southpaw struck out three batters on the evening and did not allow a base on balls. The Cardinals scratched out a single run against him in the second inning then pushed two more across in Boyd’s final inning of work. He generated eight swings and misses on 92 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll look to get back in the win column as he carries a 2.39 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and a 121/29 K/BB ratio (135 2/3 innings) into Thursday’s battle against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Boyd was outstanding against the Orioles on Saturday, tossing seven shutout frames before handing it to the Cubs bullpen, who would blow the lead in the eighth. The 34-year-old left-hander scattered four hits with no walks while striking out eight batters. Boyd ends the day with a 2.34 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and a 118/29 K/BB ratio across 130 2/3 innings. He’ll take on the Cardinals in St. Louis on Friday.

The walks drove up his pitch count, but they only produced one of the five runs, as one was mixed in among four hits in a four-run third inning. Boyd just struggled to find his secondary pitches tonight and settled for just two strikeouts and six missed swings. The loss snaps a six-game winning streak. He gave up as many runs tonight as he had in his previous seven starts combined. He’s due to face the Orioles next.

The 34-year-old southpaw allowed just four hits — all of them singles — and one walk in the ballgame while striking out six. The only threat against him came in the fifth inning as the Royals loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning, then Boyd got Kyle Isbel to line into an inning-ending double play. He generated 13 swings and misses on 93 pitches on the night — seven of them on his changeup — while posting a strong CSW of 33 percent. Now 11-3 on the season, Boyd will carry a pristine 2.20 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and a 108/24 K/BB ratio (118 2/3 innings) into Monday’s matchup against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

Boyd was at just 85 pitches after eight, but either he or manager Craig Counsell decided it wasn’t worth him going for his second career shutout and third complete game. Boyd, who opted out of pitching in the All-Star Game, finishes the first half with scoreless starts in three of his last four outings. He has a 1.28 ERA in his last nine starts, and he was pretty good before that, too. He’s one of five major leaguers with 10 victories, and his 2.34 ERA is sixth in the league.

The first-time All-Star racked up nine strikeouts on the evening while scattering three hits and one walk. The Cubs staked him to a big early lead and all he had to do was throw strikes and keep the train on the tracks for five innings, which he did with absolute ease. Boyd got 14 whiffs on 87 pitches on the night — seven of them on his fastball — while registering a CSW of 33 percent. Now 9-3 on the season, he’ll carry a pristine 2.52 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 96/23 K/BB ratio (103 2/3 innings) into his final start of the first half against the Yankees in New York on Saturday.

The 34-year-old southpaw racked up five strikeouts in the impressive outing while allowing only one base on balls. All of the damage done against him came in the fourth inning as Nolan Jones laced an RBI single into center and Angel Martinez delivered a sacrifice fly. Boyd generated seven swings and misses on 88 pitches in the ballgame, posting a CSW of 25 percent. Now 8-3 on the season, he’ll carry a sparkling 2.65 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and an 87/22 K/BB ratio (98 2/3 innings) into Sunday’s matchup against the Cardinals.

The Cubs scored in each of the first five innings for Boyd as he cruised to a victory here. Cruised is the operative word here, as he forced just six swings-and-misses but tons of lazy pop-ups. Just two batters reached scoring position in one of the easiest outings you’ll ever see. He’s lined up for a two-start week coming up against the Guardians and these same Cardinals again with both starts at home.

Boyd suffered the injury as he fell to the ground while making a terrific catch on a line drive that was smoked by J.P. Crawford right back at him. The Cubs are calling the injury very minor and don’t believe that it will impact Boyd’s ability to make his next scheduled start.

It was surprising to see Boyd lifted after 76 pitches, and it’s possible he suffered a minor injury while snaring a comebacker aimed at his head and falling to the ground to end the fifth. Boyd allowed just two hits and struck out six. He had completed six innings in of his previous 14 starts this season. If he proves fine after this, he’s due to take on the Cardinals on Wednesday.

The one hit was an Andrew McCutchen homer that would have left only three ballparks. Boyd has turned in four straight quality starts, and he’s 10 for 14 in that category. In three of the four misses, he pitched five or 5 1/3 innings and allowed zero or two runs. Basically, he’s had one bad outing all year, giving up four runs in four innings on May 23, and the Cubs won that game anyway. He’ll face the Mariners next weekend.

Boyd has a 25 percent strikeout rate this season, but he actually went without a K tonight. Fortunately, most of the contact against him was pretty weak; just seven of the Phillies’ 22 balls in play were hit hard. We wouldn’t want Boyd giving up this much contact often, but it worked out fine in this one, and he’ll carry a 2.89 ERA into his next start at home versus the Pirates.

Boyd completed seven innings for the first time since Apr. 2021. He’s been terrific in opening up 5-3 with a 3.01 ERA this season. He even has a 3.38 ERA in the three losses. As successful as they’ve been otherwise, it’s rather baffling that the Cubs are just 6-6 in his starts. He’s due to pitch in Philadelphia next time out.
