There is no firm timeline yet for Boyd, so they are currently hoping for about a month. We’ll need to wait a couple more weeks before we have a clearer idea of how long Boyd will be sidelined, but four weeks is feasible to hold in an IL spot.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters earlier on Wednesday that Boyd will undergo surgery to repair a meniscus injury in his left knee that he suffered while playing with his kids at home. The 35-year-old left-hander was scheduled to take the ball on Friday against the Rangers. He’s facing an extended absence. There should be an update on his status following the procedure.

Counsell didn’t offer a potential return timeline, but Boyd is facing an extended absence. The 35-year-old southpaw suffered the injury while playing with his kids on Wednesday. He was scheduled to take the ball on Friday against the Rangers his next time out. There should be a definitive update on his status following the surgical procedure. Boyd can be safely dropped in nearly all fantasy formats. The latest hit to Chicago’s rotation depth comes after promising second-year starter Cade Horton was lost for the season to elbow surgery and Justin Steele suffered a setback in his return from Tommy John.

Boyd bounced back after his five-run outing against the Padres his last time out. He surrendered a two-run homer to Gabriel Moreno in the second inning, then settled in for four more scoreless frames on his way to a win. He struck out five. The 35-year-old left-hander will take a 6.00 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and a 31/6 K/BB ratio across 24 innings into a start against the Rangers in Texas on Friday.

Boyd’s second start back from the injured list was an ineffective one. The southpaw allowed eight hits, issued a pair of walks, and struck out four despite generating only six swings-and-misses over 91 pitches. That pushes his ERA to 7.00 on the season, which is less than desirable. He’ll try and lower that number — it’s hard to raise it much when it gets this high, at least — against the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Boyd was lifted after 84 pitches (56 strikes) as the Cubs didn’t want to push him too far from a workload standpoint in his return from the injured list. The -year-old veteran southpaw generated 12 swinging strikes and gave up only five hits, falling just short of qualifying for a win in this one. He’ll bring a pedestrian 5.79 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 22/3 K/BB ratio across 14 innings into a road outing against the Padres on Monday.

Boyd returns to Chicago’s rotation to take the ball on Wednesday evening against the Phillies at Wrigley Field following a two-week absence recovering from a biceps strain. The 35-year-old southpaw posted 10 strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his final start before hitting the shelf. He’s in line for an extremely favorable matchup against a struggling Philadelphia lineup in his return from the injured list. Fantasy managers should make sure he’s back in lineups for this one.

Boyd returns to Chicago’s rotation mix after missing just over two weeks with a left biceps strain. The 35-year-old lefty might have some limitations from a pitch count standpoint after throwing 64 pitches in a rehab start last Thursday for Triple-A Iowa. It’s a strong matchup right out of the chute with the Phillies struggling offensively to open the year.

On the plus side, Boyd racked up six strikeouts on the afternoon while allowing only one base on balls. He threw 64 pitches in the contest — 46 of them for strikes — while his fastball topped out at 94.5 mph. The expectation is that he’ll now be cleared to rejoin the Cubs’ rotation next week, likely at the expense of Jaiver Assad.

Boyd was in the midst of an outstanding start to the season with his first double-digit strikeout performance since 2019 before hitting the injured list with a biceps strain. Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters the 35-year-old southpaw will make a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Iowa later this week before rejoining Chicago’s rotation.

Well, this is a bummer. Boyd looked good on Wednesday, striking out 10 hitters in a game for the first time since 2019. Apparently, his arm didn’t bounce back well from that injury, so he will land on the IL with Javier Assad starting in his place tomorrow. We should have more information on a timeline for Boyd’s return later this week.

Coming off a rough first outing, Boyd generated 20 whiffs today, with 11 of those coming on his fastball. He gave up just three hard-hit balls. Although Boyd was an All-Star last year, he hadn’t struck out 10 in a game since doing so seven times in 2019. He has a pretty good matchup next week against the Rays in Tampa Bay.

Boyd struck out seven and walked only one, but the contact against him was very loud. Seven of the nine balls in play against him were hard-hit, with four of those topping 105 mph. He gave up a 111-mph homer to Joey Weimer and a 111-mph shot to right to CJ Abrams that would have been a homer in 29 ballparks (Abrams wound up being thrown out at second after watching his single). Boyd’s velocity was fine today. He also had some issues with hard contact this spring, but he still seems like a fine bet at the moment. He’ll get the Angels next.

He got his work in, and that’s really all that matters. While his fastball velocity is simply holding steady, Boyd was all of the way up to 85.8 mph with his slider tonight. That’s up from 79.5 mph in 2024, 82.0 mph last year and 83.5 mph in his previous starts this spring. It’s obviously not an accident. Boyd’s slider was his best pitch in 2018 and ’19, when he was a middling starter for the Tigers. Since then, it’s been pretty average, while his fastball and changeup have done more of the heavy lifting and made him a better pitcher overall. Boyd’s next outing will come on Opening Day against the Nationals.

Per Jesse Rogers, Boyd will start Chicago’s opener against the Nationals. The Cubs clearly want him to stay ramped up for that game. Boyd profiles as a top-50 starter this year and should be started with aplomb against what looks to be a dismantled Nationals offense.

Boyd couldn’t get through his third inning, but that gave Giants minor leaguer R.J, Dabovich a chance to pitch for Team USA, as the club borrowed him for the day. Boyd averaged 94.1 mph with his fastball today, up 0.8 mph from 2025, and he got 13 whiffs on 34 swings in the 49-pitch outing.

The 35-year-old southpaw made a statement in the opening inning, getting Zach Neto on a ground ball before striking out Mike Trout and Yoan Moncada in succession. He then got a couple of weak ground balls to start the second before punching out Travis d’Arnaud. With his pitch count in a manageable range, Boyd returned for the third where he once again set down the Angels in order. Overall, he threw 23 of his 34 pitches for strikes, generating seven swings and misses and registering a CSW of 29 percent. This is likely to be his final start before Boyd leaves to join the Team USA for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Boyd, who is preparing to pitch in the WBC, had some interesting stuff going on today, as his fastball velocity was down a little from last year but all of his secondary pitches were up by 1.5-2.5 mph. So, instead of last year’s 11-mph difference between his fastball and slider, it was nine today. His changeup difference was down from 14.5 mph to 11.5 mph. Still, best not to ready too much into one outing in February.

This probably doesn’t thrill the Cubs, given Boyd’s injury history, but since he did put in a full season last year, there’s nothing the team can do about it. Boyd went 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA and made his first All-Star team in his first season in Chicago.

It was a remarkable bounce-back performance from Boyd, who managed to work into the fifth inning of a do-or-die affair for the Cubs after allowing just two runs in the opening contest of the best-of-five series. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw struck out six and allowed just two hits and three walks in this one as he and four relievers — Daniel Palencia, Drew Pomeranz, Brad Keller and Caleb Thielbar — combined on a three-hit shutout at Wrigley Field to keep Chicago’s postseason hopes alive.

There was never really much doubt. Boyd will be on four days’ rest after throwing 30 pitches and getting pulled in the first against the Brewers on short rest in Game 1. He’ll be opposed by Freddy Peralta, so it’s a rematch of the Brewers’ Game 1 victory.

Boyd gave up three straight doubles to begin the game, but he should have been out of the first having allowed only two runs if not for a Nico Hoerner error on what looked like a routine play. Boyd was removed after Blake Perkins made a 4-1 game with a single on the 11th pitch of his at-bat. On the plus side, that Boyd threw only 30 pitches should make it easy for him to come back on four days’ rest in Game 4.

The 34-year-old southpaw allowed just one run over 4 1/3 innings against the Padres on Tuesday and was extremely efficient — throwing only 58 pitches before giving way to the bullpen. He also warmed up in the bullpen during the ninth inning of Game 3 on Thursday, which could be treated as his usual side session. Either way, it would be surprising to see him work much deeper than he did on Tuesday when battling the Brewers on Saturday. The 34-year-old southpaw held a 7.84 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and a 5/8 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings in two starts against the Brewers during the regular season. He’ll be going up against Brewers’ ace Freddy Peralta.

Boyd dealt with plenty of traffic on the basepaths but managed to escape without any significant damage before turning things over to Chicago’s bullpen. He got some major help from shortstop Dansby Swanson, who made a pair of stellar run-saving catches to prevent a couple runs from crossing the plate. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw was lifted after giving up a one-out single in the fifth inning, throwing just 58 pitches (43 strikes) in the abbreviated outing. He finished with two strikeouts and only handed out one free pass.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell made it official that Boyd will take the ball for Tuesday’s series opener at Wrigley Field. It’ll likely be some combination of Shota Imanaga and Jameson Taillon to close out the three-game series with star rookie Cade Horton out with a rib injury until at least the late stages of a potential Division Series matchup.

Boyd closed his regular season with a much needed strong start. He kept the Mets’ right-handed hitters off balance all night with changeups in the strike zone when they seemed to be least expecting them. It results in tons of weak contact and very few dangerous balls put in play. Manager Craig Counsell still had a quick hook on Boyd though, pulling him with just 86 pitches and an 8-2 lead in the sixth inning as Pete Alonso came to the plate. Nevertheless, Boyd will end his excellent season with a 15-8 record and 3.21 ERA over 179 2/3 innings.

Boyd was given a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but it didn’t last long. He gave up a three-run in the bottom half of that first frame, and then walked in a run an inning later. It’s another mediocre effort from Boyd, who has allowed at least four runs in five of his last six starts. He’ll get the start Tuesday against the Mets in what could be his season finale; depending on how Chicago sets things up for their postseason run.

The 34-year-old southpaw also issued a pair of walks on the day while recording only one strikeout. Most of the damage done against him came in the opening inning as Christopher Morel slugged a three-run homer. Aside from that, Boyd allowed just a run-scoring single to Nick Fortes in the fourth. Fortunately his offense came to play and provided more than enough run support for him to earn a victory. He got six whiffs on 83 pitches on the afternoon, registering an underwhelming CSW of 19 percent. Now 13-8 on the season, he’ll bring a 3.05 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 146/39 K/BB ratio (171 1/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
