Brantly was designated for assignment by the Marlins back in July and opted for free agency rather than staying in their minor league system. He will now head to the Yankees, where he played back in 2021 and 2022.

Brantly was 0-for-2 before leaving the game after an awkward swing. There’s a chance top prospect Agustin Ramirez, who is hitting .258 with three homers and five steals in 18 games at Triple-A Jacksonville, gets the call to the majors if Brantly winds up requiring a trip to the injured list.

There’s zero fantasy-adjacent impact here, but it’s a fascinating footnote that Brantly is putting on a Marlins uniform for the first time since 2013. The 35-year-old journeyman backstop is back with the club that originally drafted him and will spend a couple weeks in a reserve role with Nick Fortes (oblique) on the shelf.
