Benson broke a scoreless tie with a one-out RBI double off of Colin Rea in the fourth inning. That would wind up being the only tally for either team in the ballgame. The 27-year-old outfielder has had a rough season offensively, slashing .229/.275/.453 with 12 homers and 40 RBI in 236 plate appearances.

Benson has three homers over 10 at-bats in the Reds’ last five games. He’s not truly a quality major league hitter, but he’s been known to resemble one for several weeks at a time. He might be an option this coming week for teams in big need of power; the Reds are one of the few teams with seven games and they’ll face righties in five of them.

Benson gets the nod with Cincinnati severing ties with Jake Fraley after four seasons. The 27-year-old outfielder will take a spot on the Reds’ bench for the final few weeks of the season. He’s always been an intriguing talent, but hasn’t quite put it together enough to merit a permanent everyday role in the big leagues.

Benson draws the short straw from a roster standpoint as Cincinnati needed to free up an active roster spot for TJ Friedl ahead of Sunday’s spectacle at Bristol Motor Speedway. The recent emergence of Noelvi Marte as a potential corner outfield option is probably a big reason why Benson is heading back to the minors.

Benson probably wouldn’t have started today had TJ Friedl not needed one more day on paternity leave, and even if he had, he almost surely would have been lifted for a pinch-hitter when the Braves brough in Dylan Dodd to face him with a man on in the seventh. Instead, with his glove needed in center, he stayed in and hit his third career homer off a southpaw. Benson, who probably isn’t in line for much playing time going forward now that Noelvi Marte is frequently starting in the outfield, came into the day batting .183/.180/.317 with two homers in 61 plate appearances this month.

Benson had started the previous nine games in a row, but his playing time has dried up with Jake Fraley back. If the Reds had another first base option, they could sit Spencer Steer against some righties to make room for Benson in the lineup. However, that’s not really possible unless maybe Gavin Lux gets a crash course at the position.

Benson drew a rare start against a left-handed pitcher. He put the only run on the board for the Reds on Saturday, taking Ranger Súarez deep for a solo homer in the fifth inning. It was his seventh of the season. The 27-year-old outfielder is slashing .240/.301/.450 with 18 runs scored and 24 RBI across 146 plate appearances.

Benson singled to lead off the sixth inning and scored on a base hit. He added a double in the eighth before stepping to the plate with the bases loaded in a tie game in the ninth. He delivered the walk-off hit off Robert Suarez to bring home the game-winning run. The 27-year-old outfielder is slashing .233/.299/.433 with six homers and 22 RBI across 137 plate appearances.

Benson has now been ice cold (11-for-68, one homer in 23 games) for twice as long as he was hot (12-for-34, five homers in his first 11 games). Maybe the Reds will keep him around after Austin Hays is activated, but a reduced role is necessary.

Robertson will get a chance to make his MLB debut after spending six-plus seasons in the minors after being a fourth-round selection. The 27-year-ol has played well in the minors this season, but fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach rather than committing a waiver-wire claim on Robertson.

The 27-year-old Robertson has hit .288/.408/.583 in 52 games at Triple-A with 12 home runs and 35 RBI. He has a 93.6 mph average exit velocity and nearly 54 percent hard-hit rate. He also has a 17 percent walk rate and a strikeout rate just under 24 percent, which is his lowest since 2019. Nathan Lukes had neck discomfort on Tuesday, so perhaps Robertson is being called up to take his place.

The Brewers are starting left-hander DL Hall, but he should likely only throw three innings, so the Reds may be playing Benson in the hopes that he faces Hall once at most. Still, both Jake Fraley and Gavin Lux are on the bench, so it’s a nice sign for Benson’s playing time that he remains in the starting lineup.

Benson gave the Reds’ bullpen a little breathing room in the eighth inning with his 374-foot (102.6 mph EV) solo shot off of Grant Anderson that made it a 4-2 ballgame. The 26-year-old outfielder struck out in each of his three other at-bats on the evening, finishing the night 1-for-4. On the season, he’s slashing .250/.303/.559 with six homers, 15 RBI and one stolen base in just 76 plate appearances.

Gavin Lux is also getting the night off. Benson takes a seat with lefty Bailey Falter toeing the rubber for Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old power/speed combo outfielder has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball of late, batting .478 (11-for-23) with five homers and one steal over his last seven games. It’ll be Connor Joe in right field with Tyler Stephenson getting a break from catching to occupy the DH spot on Tuesday evening.

Benson has arguably been the hottest hitter in baseball over the last week, launching five home runs over his last four contests, including a two-homer explosion during Sunday’s series finale against the Guardians. The 26-year-old power/speed combo outfielder has shown flashes of immense fantasy upside in previous years, but fell off the map completely last year. He’s dialed in at the plate right now and is at least worthy of a speculative roster spot in all fantasy formats. He won’t sustain this surreal hot streak for much longer, but he’s proving that he deserves an everyday opportunity in Cincinnati until further notice. He’s started eight of 10 games since returning to the majors back on May 9.

Benson hit a two-run shot off Luis L. Ortiz in the fourth inning and a solo shot off Hunter Gaddis in the sixth inning to provide all the scoring for the Reds on Sunday. Benson is on an absolute tear with at least one home run in his last four games. He’ll continue to see regular playing time against right-handed pitching as long as he’s hitting like this.

The Reds got all of their runs in the first three innings and then held on as the Guardians scored in the fourth, fifth and eighth. Benson’s homer started the scoring in the second, as he took an awful Tanner Bibee slider 361 feet to right field. He also homered and knocked in three runs Thursday against the White Sox, and he’s 7-for-18 with a 2/3 K/BB ratio in six games since being recalled last week. He’ll stay in the lineup until he coola off, and he’ll probably remain on the roster over Rece Hinds once Jake Fraley comes off the injured list.

The Reds changed things up in their outfield on Friday as they promoted Benson from Triple-A and activated Austin Hays from the injured list while Jacob Hurtubise and Blake Dunn were optioned out. Benson, 26, was off to a strong start at Triple-A — slashing .289/.377/.521 with seven homers 29 RBI and five stolen bases in his first 31 games.

Benson is sent down to Triple-A to make room for Andrew Abbott (shoulder) after Abbott came off the injured list. The 26-year-old outfielder likely will be back as a bench option at some point over the late spring.
