Civale fortifies Chicago’s rotation depth heading into the final month of the season and will be eligible for the postseason, if the Cubs get there. The 30-year-old righty has posted an underwhelming 5.26 ERA across 89 innings (18 starts) this season between the White Sox and Brewers.

Civale was removed from the rotation this week when the Brewers decided to promote Jacob Misiorowski, and he was not happy about becoming a reliever. Civale pitched well in 14 starts after joining Milwaukee last season, posting a 3.53 ERA. He hurt his hamstring early this season but has registered a 3.32 ERA over 19 innings in four starts since returning on May 22. He’ll be a free agent at the end of the season and could be a solid back-end starter for a contender in the second half of the season.

It was reported yesterday that the Brewers were calling up Misiorowski, who is their top pitching prospect, and now we know how he’ll fit into the rotation. Brewers manager Pat Murphy admitted that Civale, who has been a starter his whole career, is “not happy” about the move, but the Brewers are just 2.5 games out of a playoff spot and believe Misiorowski gives them the best chance to make a push. Civale can be dropped in all formats, and Misiorowski should be added in most places, even if you keep him on your bench to start, because his upside is tremendous.

Civale pitched four scoreless innings before giving up a homer and a double in the fifth. After he was lifted, DL Hall surrendered another homer, scoring the inherited runner. Civale has allowed one or two runs in each of his four starts since coming off the injured list last month, though he’s pitched a total of 19 innings in those games The Brewers’ quick hooks will continue to help his ERA, but they make him a weaker bet fror wins. He’s slated to face the Cardinals next.

Now that the Brewers have worked themselves back into the playoff discussion, Passan reports that they could look to unload some of their starting pitching depth for a bat to improve the left side of their infield. The Brewers have Logan Henderson and Jacob Misiorowski waiting in the wings, and Brandon Woodruff nearing a return, so the team could look to unload Civale, who is a free agent after this season, if it will net them an interesting hitter.

Making his third start since coming off the IL and fourth overall, Civale allowed just five hard-hit balls and one extra-base hit, a leadoff double from TJ Friedl in the first. He struck out five and walked one. Civale isn’t much of an option in 12-team mixed leagues at the moment, but he should offer some value in deeper formats. He’ll get the Braves next.

Civale struck out four and walked one in his second start back from a hamstring strain. He has a 6.00 ERA overall in his three starts this season. There will probably be times at which he’s at least a streaming option in mixed leagues, but next week’s outing in Cincinnati isn’t one of them.

It’s a factor for fantasy managers to consider when weighing adding pitching prospect Logan Henderson, that Civale — and possibly even Brandon Woodruff (ankle, shoulder) — could potentially return to Milwaukee’s rotation by the end of the month. Veteran lefty José Quintana (shoulder) is set to resume throwing next week and is probably a couple weeks out as well. The 29-year-old righty tossed four scoreless innings on Thursday in his latest rehab outing and figures to be on the precipice of making it back to the Brewers’ rotation.

Civale suffered a setback from his strained hamstring in the middle of April, but the 29-year-old has progressed enough to get back on the mound. The right-hander will assuredly need multiple outings before coming back to the majors, but he should be ready for the rotation by the end of May if he doesn’t have another setback.
