Six homers in 212 plate appearances for Canario, who was making his first start in a week. He’s driven in runs in each of his last four starts, and while he’s batting just .215/.274/.344 overall, his exit velocity numbers are strong enough that Statcast gives him an xSLG about 100 points higher than his actual mark. It seems like a waste not to be giving him more at-bats at Tommy Pham’s expense.

Canario struck out twice, but his two balls in play were hit 111.7 and 110.8 mph. The Pirates need to give him a real look in September, even though it’d mean fewer at-bats for Tommy Pham and Andrew McCutchen. Canario has hit just .212/.275/.332 in 200 plate appearances to date, but Statcast thinks he should be slugging about 100 points higher than his actual mark.

Vargas gets another shot after being released earlier his week by the Yankees after hitting .226/.291/.359 with seven homers and 20 steals in 89 games this season between Double-A Somerset and High-A Hudson Valley. The 25-year-old outfielder briefly gave the Pirates the lead with a two-run single off of Casey Mize in the third inning that made it a 3-2 ballgame. He was then cut down attempting to steal second base. That would be the extent of their offense in the contest though. On the season, Canario is slashing an underwhelming .211/.271/.316 with three homers, 10 RBI, two stolen bases and a 45/11 K/BB ratio over 144 plate appearances.

Canario nearly had a home run in the sixth inning when he hit a 396-foot shot at 102.2 mph that would have gone out in 27 other stadiums. Instead, the 25-year-old had to settle for a triple off the wall. Now that he’s playing regularly, Canario has been solid, going 20-for-68 (.294) in 19 games in May with two home runs, seven runs scored, and six RBI. The team context isn’t great, and his swing-and-miss tendencies will lead to some cold stretches, but he has the power to be useful in deeper formats.

It wasn’t a banner day at the ballpark for anybody in the Pirates lineup, considering they got shut out, but Canario is now 14-for-43 (.326) with two home runs and six RBI in May since becoming an everyday player. He has plus raw power and is finally getting a chance to play regularly. He swings and misses a fair amount, but he could be a solid deep league add, even though the lineup context around him is not great.

Canario took Reds lefty Andrew Abbott deep in the fifth inning for his first big fly of the season. The 24-year-old top prospect appears poised to get an extended opportunity this season with the Pirates, but he’s off to a bit of a slow start, hitting .125 (2-for-16) through seven games.
