Chivilli hit the injured list with shoulder discomfort over the weekend and is going to be shut down until at least mid-May before he’s cleared to resume throwing. He’s likely going to be out until some point in May, barring any setbacks.

Chivili will be out at least two weeks, and shoulder issues are often longer stints; particularly for pitchers. The right-hander’s spot on the roster is taken by David Weathers, who was activated off the injured list in a corresponding move. There should be more on Chivili’s status in the coming days.

Chivilli will open the year back in the minors after being acquired from the Rockies for prospect T.J. Rumfield back in late January. The 23-year-old righty figures to operate in middle relief for New York at some point later this season after their pitching development has a chance to continue working on his arsenal.

Chivilli probably wasn’t making the Yankees out of spring training even with a strong Grapefruit League showing, but this could get him sent down a little earlier. He opened up the fifth by retiring just one of the six hitters he faced to reach, after which he was pulled. In spite of that, the Yankees brought him back out for the sixth anyway. He gave up a double, got a strikeout and then was lifted again.

This is a stuff-based move for the Yankees. Chivilli is a 23-year-old reliever who throws 97 mph but also has a slider that registered a 110 Stuff+ grade and also has a changeup that posted a 40 percent whiff rate. However, he struggled in Colorado and wasn’t much better on the road last season. The Yankees are betting on their pitching development team being able to maximize his raw talent.

No word yet on the reasoning for the right-hander’s placement on the list or how long he’ll be away from the team for. Kyle Karros had his contract selected from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move on Friday.

Chivilli has shuttled between Colorado’s bullpen and Triple-A Albuquerque this season, posting a lackluster 5.91 ERA over 35 innings (25 appearances) at the big-league level. The 22-year-old right-hander should get an extended look down the stretch as the Rockies continue to lean into a long-term evaluation mode.

Chvilli has been up-and-down from Albuquerque to Colorado and vice versa for the majority of the year, and it’s unlikely to change anytime soon. He’ll move south this time with Zach Agnos getting the promotion to take his place on the roster.

Chivilli has bounced around between Colorado’s bullpen and the minors over the last few weeks. The 22-year-old righty is back in the big leagues to give the Rockies some additional relief depth for Sunday’s showdown against the Diamondbacks. He’s registered an underwhelming 6.14 ERA across 29 1/3 innings (20 appearances) this season at the highest level.
