Chapman was summoned to record the final out of the eighth inning after a masterful effort from Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet before coming back out to protect a two-run lead in the final frame after Alex Bregman added some additional insurance with a run-scoring double. It took just five pitches for New York to load the bases on three consecutive hits from Paul Goldschmidt, Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger, which put the tying runs in scoring position. He punched out Giancarlo Stanton on a nasty 92 mph splitter before coaxing a harmless fly out from Jazz Chisholm Jr. and striking out Trent Grisham on a foul tip to preserve the series-opening win.

He allowed a leadoff double to Justyn-Henry Malloy and pinch-runner Zach McKinstry advanced to third base with just one out, but Chapman battled back to strike out Wenceel Perez and Spencer Torkelson to end the threat. He then became the beneficiary as the Red Sox walked it off. The deal locks up the star southpaw through the 2026 season at a guarantee of $13.3 million and includes a vesting mutual option for the 2027 campaign. If he reaches a certain innings threshold, the 2027 option would be guaranteed as well, earning a total of $26 million over the two years. He has certainly earned the extension with his work in 2025 — posting a minuscule 1.02 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and a 76/14 K/BB ratio over 53 innings while converting 27 of his first 29 save chances.

Jorge Alcala opened the ninth in a four-run game, but even with the bottom of the order coming up, Alex Cora got antsy after he allowed a walk and a single while recording one out. Chapman took over and struck out Cam Smith before getting Mauricio Dubón to ground out to end the game. If Chapman is unavailable on Sunday after pitching on back-to-back days, then Jordan Hicks will likely close.

Chapman was brought on to slam the door on a potential Minnesota comeback with the Red Sox leading by three runs after Jorge Alcala coughed up two runs and wasn’t able to close out the frame. The 37-year-old southpaw was back in action after a two-game absence due to back tightness, which doesn’t appear to be a significant concern moving forward.

It would likely fall to Garrett Whitlock to handle a save situation, if one arises on Monday night at Target Field. Cora added that they believe Chapman will be ready to pitch on Tuesday or Wednesday. The 37-year-old All-Star closer left Sunday’s relief outing against the Dodgers with back tightness. It doesn’t appear to be a serious concern, but back issues can be tricky and fantasy managers should keep a close eye on his status.

That’s most definitely encouraging news for fantasy managers who had been worried that Chapman may have suffered some sort of catastrophic arm injury due to his diminished velocity on Sunday. Red Sox skipper Alex Cora said after the game that he doesn’t think Chapman will even require a trip to the injured list. The 37-year-old stopper should be considered day-to-day.

The 37-year-old southpaw was experiencing very diminished velocity before exiting with a trainer, topping out at 95 mph. He’ll head for further evaluation to determine exactly what’s going on there, but there are some rumors that he was seen vomiting in the bullpen before the game, so there’s a chance he’s simply battling an illness. Jordan Hicks came on to replace him, but Garrett Whitlock figures to be the next man up if Chapman requires a trip to the injured list. He was unavailable today after pitching in four of the last six games. Stay tuned as the Red Sox should have an update on his status after the game.

Chapman is going to the All-Star Game this year for the first time since 2021 — his eighth appearance. His ERA is down to 1.22 after tonight, and he might be the most coveted reliever available at the deadline, should the Red Sox make him available.

Chapman is the 14th pitcher to reach 350 saves. Nine more this year would move him past Troy Percival, and there’s an outside chance of him getting 18 and 19 to overtake Jeff Readon and Jonathan Papelbon, respectively. However, with the Red Sox not really looking like top contenders, it’s quite possible that Chapman will be traded, perhaps to a team that would use him in more of a setup role.

What year is it? Chapman continues to throw the baseball past hitters, and he needed just 13 pitches to mow down the Seattle order while picking up his 13th save. Two of those offerings were clocked above 100 mph, and he lowered his ERA to 1.50 in the process.

Throwing 102 mph as a 37-year-old doesn’t feel natural. Yet, Chapman continues to come out throwing gas night in and night out. Most important, he’s drastically cut down on his free passes this season with the Red Sox. His walk rate has sunk from 14% to 8% so far and if that remains in check, there’s no reason he won’t continue to be a shutdown closer.
