Even with Will Smith’s hand keeping him out of the lineup for four of the Dodgers’ six games, Rushing had received only one postseason at-bat to date. Smith is back starting now, so the Dodgers will drop their third catcher in favor of Casparius, who finished the season in Triple-A after posting a 4.64 ERA in 77 2/3 innings. This puts the Dodgers back up to 12 pitchers, not counting Shohei Ohtani.

Casparius has seen his role diminish in Los Angeles’ bullpen over recent weeks and he’ll head back to the minors to allow the club to activate high-leverage specialist Alex Vesia. The versatile 26-year-old righty has compiled a pedestrian 4.64 ERA across 77 2/3 innings over 46 appearances at the highest level this season.

Blake Treinen was given the save opportunity, but he loaded the bases with two outs, so Dave Roberts brought in Casparius to face Yandy Diaz as the winning run. Casparius fell behind 2-1 but got Diaz to ground out to shortstop to end the game. This is now Casparius’ second save of the season, and he is firmly part of a closer committee with Treinen and Alex Vesia while Tanner Scott (forearm) is on the IL.

So far this season, Casparius has been a high leverage reliever, middle reliever, bulk reliever, starting pitcher, and now apparently a closer. This was his first save of the campaign and came after an off-day. Yirby Yates, the Dodgers’ current presumed closer, did throw 18 pitches in the eighth inning in their last game on Wednesday and allowed two runs without recording an out. It’s anyone’s guess as to who will save the Dodgers’ next victory.

Casparius was lifted from Tuesday’s relief outing against the Twins at Dodger Stadium with a right calf cramp. It’s unclear whether he’ll ultimately require a trip to the injured list, but that’ll likely come down to whether he’s able to resume throwing at some point later this week. There should be a definitive update on his status soon, but he doesn’t appear to be a facing a lengthy absence.

Casparius has dealt with cramping issues previously, and he said he started feeling it during his warmup throws tonight. If no damage is detected during the MRI, he should be good to go in a couple of days.

Casparius, who was torched for six runs over three innings on Friday night against Houston, has been hit extremely hard since ostensibly joining Los Angeles’ starting rotation in a regular bulk role a couple weeks ago. The decision paves the way for Emmet Sheehan, who is poised to start on Sunday against the Astros, to take over the rotation spot moving forward.

Casparius not the only pitcher for the Dodgers who stunk, but he was first, so he gets the loss. He allowed nine hits with three of those leaving the ballpark, and its’ been pretty clear over the last two games that a bulk role is more becoming for the right-hander. Casparius has seen his ERA rise to 4.68, and if he starts again, it’ll come next weeked against the Giants.

Casparius gave up eight hits, walked one and struck out four. The 26-year-old right-hander had allowed more than three runs in an appearance just once on the season entering play Saturday. Casparius’ ERA went up to 3.94 on the year, though his xFIP is 3.65 and he has a 54/12 K/BB ratio in 56 2/3 innings this year. It makes sense for him to continue to follow Shohei Ohtani’s abbreviated pitching appearances and that could happen again against the Astros at home next weekend.

It sounds like the Dodgers will continue to have Casparius work in a piggyback role with Ohtani while the two-way superstar gets himself stretched out. Ohtani should only be expected to work an inning or two on Saturday, leaving plenty of room in the middle innings for Casparius to pile up strikeouts and potentially secure a victory. As always, he makes for a terrific streaming option for fantasy purposes.

The 26-year-old right-hander walked one and struck out two opposing hitters on the day. He entered after Shohei Ohtani worked a scoreless first inning as an opener. The only damage done against him came on a three-run blast off the bat of Nathaniel Lowe in the third inning. Aside from that though, Casparius was terrific. He got eight whiffs on 77 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 21 percent. He now holds a 3.25 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and a 50/11 K/BB ratio over 52 2/3 innings on the season. Look for him to work in a similar setup behind Ohtani on Saturday against the Royals in Kansas City.

Although he settled for two strikeouts and just two missed swings, Casparius was able to get 12 outs on 54 pitches in his longest outing this season. If the Dodgers keep stretching him out, he’ll probably offer some mixed-league value, even if his ERA seems likely to increase in the rotation. He has a 2.86 ERA and a stellar 46/9 K/BB in 44 innings to this point. Unless something changes, he’ll face the Padres again next Monday or Tuesday.

Casparius drew the starting assignment for Wednesday’s series finale against the Padres in San Diego and it sounds like he could stick in the Dodgers’ rotation until further notice with Tony Gonsolin (elbow) facing a lengthy absence. The 26-year-old righty is a true X-factor for fantasy purposes since he’s excelled in a multi-inning role this season, registering a pristine 2.93 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 44/7 K/BB ratio across 40 innings (21 appearances, one start). He’s at least worthy of a speculative roster spot in all fantasy formats as a low-risk dice roll.

Casparius struck out five after replacing Jack Dreyer in the second inning. He got up to 70 pitches tonight, so the Dodgers might give him a start next time through the rotation, though he’s probably more valuable for fantasy purposes in the bulk role, which increases the chances of him getting a win. He’s worth a roster spot in mixed leagues.

Dreyer will likely go an inning or two. He also opened in front of Matt Sauer against the Marlins last week, and the Dodgers won that game 15-2. Casparius is being stretched out to handle a starter’s workload and could turn out to be an interesting guy in mixed leagues.

Casparius was credited with the win, making him 3-0 with a 2.91 ERA in 21 1/3 innings. He was expected to start Wednesday’s game, though if that happens now, it’d probably be a shorter outing, given that he’d be on two days’ rest after throwing 54 pitches. If he winds up getting a real look as a starter in Glasnow’s place, he’d be intriguing.

There are two prevailing schools of thought when watching an outing like this from Casparius: he is not a starting pitcher and he is legitimately nasty. He was pulled with two outs in the third inning, exactly when the Cubs’ lineup was about to turn over for the second time. That being said, he mixed four pitches and forced multiple swings-and-misses with three of them. He’s worthy of a spot on a watch list, since there’s a chance he’s trusted to stay in games a bit longer at some point given all the injuries to the Dodgers’ rotation.
