Criswell, 29, had a 4.08 ERA in 18 starts and eight relief appearances for Boston in 2024, but he spent most of 2025 in Triple-A and also missed some time. The thinking was that he might be bumped from the 40-man this winter, and that’s still a possibility, as the fully guaranteed contract would make it more likely that he’d clear waivers.

Criswell has been jettisoned back to the minors with trade acquisition Dustin May officially joining Boston’s active roster after hurling seven shutout innings on Friday in a spot start against the Astros. The 29-year-old swingman figures to return at some point later this month to bolster the Red Sox’ long relief depth.

Called up just a few days ago for this spot start, Criswell did everything he could to give his Red Sox a chance to win this game. His seven innings pitched tied a career-high and he was in complete control for this entire game besides a solo home run from Christian Walker that cleared the Green Monster. It is unclear if he’ll get another turn in the rotation after the addition of Dustin May at the trade deadline.

Criswell provides Boston’s overworked bullpen with some additional depth and a fresh arm following Monday’s bizarre series opener in Minnesota. The 29-year-old righty has posted a pedestrian 5.06 ERA across 10 2/3 innings (six appearances) this season at the highest level.

Criswell has been a frequent traveler between Worcester and Boston, and the 28-year-old will head back to the minors to make room for Robert Stock to give Boston a fresh arm in their bullpen.

Criswell fits the mold of a modern-era swingman in the sense that he’s capable of gobbling up multiple innings as a bulk reliever or jump into the rotation at the moments notice for a traditional spot start. The 28-year-old provides Boston with some extra length out of the bullpen over the next few days after the club burned through several relievers during Monday’s series opener against the Angels.

Hummel’s second stint with the Orioles will last a little longer than the first — he was added Sunday and DFA’d the next day — but he’s still a temp. The 30-year-old has hit .159/.255/.275 in 235 career plate appearances in the majors.

It remains to be seen if Hummel will accept the outright assignment or peddle his wares on the open market instead. The 30-year-old was with the O’s for just one day — and he didn’t appear in that game though the Orioles did secure a victory.

Adley Rutschman’s injury yesterday cost Hummel his spot just one day after he was signed, as the Orioles needed another catcher on the roster. Hummel has experience there — he started 14 games behind the plate for the Diamondbacks in 2022 — but he hasn’t caught since 2023.

It didn’t take long for Hummel to find another opportunity after opting out of his minor league contract with the Yankees earlier this week. The versatile 30-year-old hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since getting into six contests last year for the Astros. He’ll occupy a bench role for Baltimore.

Criswell will head back to Triple-A to make room for Nick Burdi, with Burdi recalled in a corresponding move. Criswell will likely be back as a multi-inning bullpen option at some point this summer.

The cosmic ideal for the modern-era emergency swingman-type, Criswell provides the Red Sox with some additional depth heading into Saturday’s twin bill against the Guardians at Progressive Field. The 28-year-old is capable of gobbling up multiple innings, if needed, and will likely head back to Triple-A Worcester at the conclusion of the doubleheader.

Criswell struck out four in four hitless innings against the Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate in his second appearance since being sent down by the Red Sox. The right-hander, who had a 10.38 ERA in three major league relief appearances to begin the year, will likely be up and down between Boston and Worcester a few times this year.

Hjerpe, 24, has been limited to 93 innings since being drafted 22nd overall in the 2022 draft. He had a 3.27 ERA and a 76/28 K/BB over 52 1/3 innings in 19 starts between high-A and Double-A last year.
