Carlson was responsible for the only two runs the Orioles were able to score off Jason Alexander with a homer off Alexander in the fifth. That roundtripper is his sixth, while the triple was his first since joining the Orioles in the offseason. Carlson has been ever-so-ineffective in 2025, but there are just enough games like to occasionally get your hopes up.

They’re batting eighth and ninth behind first baseman Coby Mayo. Carlson should eventually be replaced by Dylan Beavers, but until the Orioles make the move, he’ll probably be a starting outfielder. Jackson is the best pick on the roster for the DH spot at the moment, but that’ll change once Ryan Mountcastle is activated, something that’ll probably happen no later than Monday.

Carlson finally got the Orioles on the board with a leadoff 408-foot (103.8 mph EV) solo shot off of Tommy Kahnle in the eighth inning. He also singled twice off of Tarik Skubal in the ballgame, tallying three of the O’s four total hits in the contest. On the season, he’s now hitting a respectable .247/.300/.452 with four long balls and 12 RBI in his first 80 plate appearances.

The Orioles gave Carlson the nod in center over Cedric Mullins in the hopes of a revenge game and got one. The 397-foot homer against his former team was the farthest Carlson had hit a ball since June 20, 2023, when he somehow hit 445- and 404-foot homers off MacKenzie Gore. Carlson also homered Sunday against the Red Sox. He was 1-for-22 with 11 strikeouts in the majors this season before going 5-for-12 with three extra-base hits and one strikeout the last three days. The surge should keep him in the lineup for now and could allow him to retain a roster spot over Heston Kjerstad when the Orioles start getting their other outfielders back from the IL.

Meanwhile, Heston Kjerstad is slashing .216/.231/.351 in 39 plate appearances at the MLB level with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Kjerstad is going to need to start producing soon, or the Orioles could give Carlson another chance.
