With his velocity down a little, Cease struck out a season-low five while giving up season-high run and hit (seven) totals. He still didn’t give up any homers for the sixth straight start. He’ll take a 2.87 ERA into his next start Saturday against Minnesota.

If you’re going to pick up your first win with your new team, you might as well strike out a dozen in the process. That’s just good manners. Cease was able to get 18 swings-and-misses on his offerings, and he issued just two walks. While it is his first win, that says more about the lack of run support than anything he’s done wrong; he now sports a 2.10 ERA and a 44/19 K/BB over his first 25 2/3 innings with the Jays. The only complaint here is that because Cease needed to throw 110 pitches, he wasn’t able to get deeper into the game. He should obviously be in fantasy lineups for Sunday’s scheduled tilt against the Guardians.

Cease struck out six before leaving with a 1-0 lead that didn’t hold up. Both hits against him were singles. He’s opened his Blue Jays career with a 1.74 ERA and 32 strikeouts over 20 2/3 innings in four starts, but he’s yet to factor into a decision. He’ll get the Angels next.

Cease struck out eight while allowing one unearned run in a tie game through five. If he’d still been pitching for the Padres, that probably would have been the end of his day. However, the Blue Jays were hoping for a little more, given the current state of their rotation. Unfortunately, the sixth started with a walk, a single and another walk, necessitating his removal. Louis Varland came in with the bases loaded and none out and managed to strand two of three baserunners, with Teoscar Hernández’s sac fly producing one run. Cease has a 2.45 ERA through three starts, but he’s yet to be involved in a decision. He’ll face Milwaukee next time out.

Cease’s own error led to the unearned run in the first. In the third, he gave up two more runs on a walk, a soft groundball single, a double steal and another single. Cease would up with 16 whiffs and just four hard-hit balls in the 93-pitch outing. Ideally, he would have been more efficient while striking out six and walking three, but that’s not really his specialty. He’s sittable in shallow leagues next week with the Dodgers on the schedule.

Cease was outstanding in his debut with the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old right-hander dominated the A’s over five shutout innings before a walk and a double brought a run in to score in the sixth. Cease would end his day with one out in the inning at 90 pitches -- 61 for strikes. His fastball was sitting at 98.7 mph, up 1.6 mph from last season. He generated an incredible 24 whiffs to collect a dozen strikeouts, at one point striking out seven consecutive batters. Cease will look to follow his excellent start with a matchup against the White Sox in Chicago on Sunday.

Because he was lined up to throw on a couple of the Jays’ off days, Cease ends the spring with just 9 2/3 innings pitched, but he did well to allow only one run and strike out 12. He’s right where he needs to be ahead of his official Blue Jays debut against the A’s on Saturday.

The best hitter the Braves brought with them today was Ben Gamel. The second best was maybe Oscar Azocar. So, it wasn’t really a test for Cease and company. Cease has thrown just 4 2/3 innings to date, as the Jays have gone slower with their starters than other teams, but he’s looking strong. He averaged 97.8 mph with his fastball today, up from 97.1 mph last year.

He struck out three. The damage against him came on a 432-foot homer from Bryan De La Cruz. Cease averaged 97.4 mph with his fastball, which was just a tad up from his 97.1-mph average last year, and got eight misses on 15 swings.

There’s deferred money in the deal that makes it around $26 million per year for luxury tax purposes, but in terms of cash, Cease gets the seventh-largest contract in history for a pitcher, tied with Max Scherzer’s seven-year deal that expired in 2021 and Corbin Burnes’ seven-year deal signed a year ago. Cease replaces Chris Bassitt and is set to join Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, José Berríos and Trey Yesavage in the Jays’ 2026 rotation. He should probably be looked at in the 15-20 range among fantasy SPs.

Finally. Beavers is in right field and batting sixth on Saturday night against the Astros in his big-league debut. He was hitting .304/.420/.515 with 18 homers and 23 steals for Triple-A Norfolk and should have been called up weeks ago. The Orioles waited because they want him to retain rookie eligibility next year, potentially netting them a draft pick if he finishes in the top two in the Rookie of the Year balloting. Beavers will likely start against right-handed pitching the rest of the way and should offer some fantasy value, at least in deeper leagues. He might not hit for average initially, but hopefully, he’ll keep up with the basestealing. He’s 54-for-62 there since the beginning of 2024.

Beavers is ready to face MLB pitching. He’s now hitting .307 with 16 home runs, 46 RBI, and 21 steals on the season in Triple-A with a .941 OPS. The Orioles claim they are not ready to call him up yet, but we’d imagine their tune changes after August 15th, when they no longer run the risk of him losing his rookie eligibility. He might be a good stash in fantasy leagues as that date nears.

If only there was something he could do about it. With Ramón Laureano and Cedric Mullins gone, there’s plenty of room for Beavers in the Orioles’ outfield, and it’s pretty disappointing that he’s not getting a shot right now; his .304/.414/.502 line and 62/56 K/BB in 83 games in Triple-A suggests he’s ready. Basallo’s case is a bit more complicated, but the Orioles had an opportunity to give him a look while Adley Rutschman was out.

The 2022 first-round pick has been swinging a hot bat in July and is now hitting .306 on the season with 14 home runs, 21 steals, 42 RBI, and a .924 OPS. If Cedric Mullins and/or Ramon Laureano get traded today, there’s a good chance Beavers is patrolling the outfield in Baltimore for the final two months of the season.

The 23-year-old is hitting .284/.448/.567 in July with five home runs, 12 RBI, three steals, and a 13/18 K/BB ratio. He has 21 steals on the season to go along with a .303 average and .912 OPS. There is a good chance he’ll be starting in the outfield for Baltimore by next week.

Beavers is the fifth-ranked prospect in the Orioles system after being a first-round pick in 2022. He’s put together a tremendous season at Triple-A, hitting .305 with 13 home runs, 41 RBI, 20 steals, a .907 OPS, and a 58/47 K/BB ratio. With so many players on Baltimore’s MLB roster potentially being moved at the trade deadline, Beavers could get a shot at big league at-bats in August.

The former first-round pick is hitting .311/.405/.482 in 71 games at Triple-A this season with 10 home runs, 34 RBI, 52 runs, and 20 steals. Beavers has taken a more selective approach this season, chasing less outside of the zone but being far more aggressive inside of the zone. That has led to a huge jump in contact rate and a breakout for the 23-year-old. With trade rumors swirling around Ramon Laureano, Beavers may get a shot at MLB at-bats after the trade deadline. However, with the Orioles, you never really know how many at-bats that will be.

Beavers sustained the injury when he collided with a teammate while going for a ball in the outfield. It’s not the same shoulder that Beavers injured earlier in the season. The severity of the injury — as well as any time he may miss — are not yet known.
