The 22-year-old southpaw was a sixth-round selection by the Yankees from the 2024 draft class. Herring has pitched extremely well over 16 starts between Single-A Tampa and High-A Hudson Valley this season, compiling a minuscule 1.71 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 102/36 K/BB ratio over 89 1/3 innings. He’ll add another talented young arm to the Rockies’ organization.

Canning suffered the Achilles rupture during Thursday’s start against the Mets. It’s a devastating loss for fantasy managers and New York, as Canning had been pitching at an outstanding level in his first year with the Mets. This likely sidelines the 30-year-old for the year, and hope is he can find that same level in 2026.

Mendoza noted that while they’re still awaiting the results of Canning’s MRI exam, the expectation is that he suffered a major Achilles injury. It’s a devastating blow to the Mets and for the 29-year-old right-hander who has resurrected his career in his first season with the ballclub. Look for the Mets to provide another update on his status as soon as the results of that MRI exam are available.

He’ll undergo further testing to determine the severity of the injury. Canning sustained the injury during the third inning of his start against the Braves as he went to back up third base on a ground ball to the shortstop. Expect the Mets to pass along more information as it becomes available. At this stage, it would be surprising if Canning wasn’t headed to the injured list.

Canning delivered a pitch to Nick Allen that resulted in a ground out to the shortstop, but he hopped off the mound and fell to the ground, clutching his leg. The training staff ultimately had to help support the right-hander as he hobbled off the field. He’ll head for testing to see exactly what’s going on there, but it didn’t look good. Look for the Mets to provide an update on his status as soon as more information becomes available.

It wasn’t a banner night for Canning, and it seemed like he might be in for an early exit after allowing two runs in the first and one in the second and then walking two in the third. Instead, he got better as the game went on and hung around long enough to improve to 7-3. With Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill landing on the IL to open up spots for Frankie Montas and soon Sean Manaea, questions about Canning’s rotation status are gone for now, and he’ll face the Braves on Thursday.

Canning gave up four hits, walked five and struck out two. The 29-year-old right-hander was done in by free passes as he allowed walks that ultimately came around to score in the second, third and fifth innings. Canning walked two in the fifth inning and was removed from the game, but both runners scored on Jonathan Aranda’s double. He’s allowed 10 runs in his last two starts and walked at least four batters in three of his last five starts. It doesn’t get easier for Canning as he’s lined up to face the Phillies on the road next weekend.

Nathaniel Lowe and CJ Abrams homered off him. Canning has pitched just 17 innings and given up 12 runs over his last four outings. He still has a nice 3.22 ERA for the season, but his time in the rotation might be running out with Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea on the road back. He’s slated to face the Rays next time out.

Canning was outstanding over his six frames against the Los Angeles; generating 13 swings-and-misses over 99 pitches, and holding the Dodgers to just three hits and one walk. The 29-year-old has been outstanding for the majority of the 2025 season as seen in a 2.90 ERA and (deserved) 6-2 record in his first season with the Mets. Canning will get a start against the Mets on Tuesday.

Canning walked four again today. He did the same in 2 2/3 innings against the Dodgers last week before a rain delay ended his outing. He’d walked a total of three batters in 16 1/3 innings over his first three starts in May. It’d be a bad time for him to start to struggle, as the Mets have Paul Blackburn back from the IL and Frankie Montas starting a rehab assignment. Canning should stay in the rotation for now and face the Dodgers next week.

For those of you waiting for Canning to implode, you might be waiting a while. The 29-year-old struck out five and walked just one on the day, with his only run coming on a home run by Pete Crow-Armstrong. While Canning has had tons of success pitching backwards this season, he used his four-seam fastball more than any other pitch on the day, and it was his changeup that stole the show with a 45 percent whiff rate and 35 percent CSW. Leaning into secondary pitches has been really beneficial for Canning, who has a 2.36 ERA on the season. He may be a risky start next week against the Yankees, but it’s hard to bench him right now.

After allowing a solo homer to Corbin Carroll to leadoff the game, Canning didn’t give up another run. It’s another strong start for the 28-year-old that sees his ERA drop to 2.50, and six strikeouts against one walk improves that ratio to 37/15. Canning will be back on the bump for a Mother’s Day tilt against the Cubs.

Canning gave up four hits and walked three, but he spread things around well enough to avoid giving up any runs. Although he’s completed six innings just once, Canning has gone 4-1 with a 2.61 ERA in his six starts. He’ll rate as a nice play again Saturday against the Cardinals.

The Mets let Canning throw 102 pitches over six innings against the Cardinals last time out, but he was lifted after 84 pitches in another effective outing tonight. He has a 3.12 ERA after five turns, and even with the early exits, he’s gone 3-1. He’s slated to face the Nationals on Monday, and he makes for a solid streaming option in a two-start week.

Canning was originally due to start Wednesday before being pushed back due to an illness. He obviously showed little effect of it tonight while racking up 16 whiffs and allowing just four hard-hit balls. He improved to 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA ahead of next week’s start against the Phillies.

There was some speculation from Newday’s Tim Healey that top pitching prospect Brandon Sproat was a potential option for Friday or Saturday, if Canning wasn’t feeling better. The fact that they’re not waiting to make a decision here suggest that Canning is definitely feeling well enough to take the ball after being scratched from Wednesday’s scheduled start due to illness.

No word yet on Griffin’s potential replacement. Mets top pitching prospects Brandon Sproat, Blade Tidwell and Nolan McLean all pitched within the past few days in the upper minors, which eliminates them as potential emergency stopgap options. It’ll likely wind up being a bullpen game for the Mets unless they want to have David Peterson take the ball on short rest, which doesn’t seem ideal. Stay tuned.

Canning’s line is a little misleading, as he held the A’s to just one run over five innings. The sixth was problematic, however, and he allowed three; including a two-run homer by Miguel Andujar. The 28-year-old allowed seven hits in the contest while walking three against three strikeouts. Not great, but good enough for a win thanks to plenty of run support. Canning will be back on the bump Wednesday against the Twins in Minnesota.
