One imagines that’ll be Cortes’s final rehab start as he returns from an elbow injury, though the Brewers still need to figure out what to do with him. Certainly, none of their starters need replacing right now, but they could go to a six-man rotation to make room for Cortes next week.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Curt Hogg adds that Brewers manager Pat Murphy has indicated that Cortes could make one additional rehab outing before returning to the majors. It’s a variable for fantasy managers to consider before assuming the veteran southpaw will return to take the ball this week against the Marlins. There should be an official update on his status at some point in the coming days.

The left-hander struck out four, walked nobody, and gave up just one hit, which was a bunt single. He threw 25 of his 37 pitches for strikes in what was an extremely efficient outing. Cortes will obviously need a few more starts to build up his pitch count, but the bigger question is where he fits. With Brandon Woodruff coming off the IL on Sunday, the Brewers have six starters in their big league rotation right now, and Logan Henderson is also at Triple-A. That could mean that Cortes is used in a trade if he continues to show good health and form.

The 30-year-old southpaw made it through two simulated innings without issue on Friday and that was the final hurdle that he needed to clear before being unleashed in live game action. He’s expected to require a lengthy rehab assignment before he’s ready to rejoin the Brewers’ rotation.

The plan is for Cortes to throw a live batting practice in the coming days and then begin a rehab assignment. He will likely need a lengthy rehab assignment, but the Brewers would like him to pitch a few times before the trade deadline so that he can build up some trade value. Cortes is a free agent at the end of the season, and considering the emergence of Quinn Priester, Chad Patrick, Logan Henderson, and Jacob Misiorowski, the Brewers could afford to see what they can get for Cortes in a trade.

It was the third bullpen session that the 30-year-old southpaw has completed in his recovery from a left elbow flexor strain. He’ll repeat the process again next week with a pair of up-downs before he’s cleared to face live hitters for the first time. He’s still at least a month away from potentially being an option to help out the Brewers’ rotation.

The 30-year-old had a PRP injection in his left elbow after his start on April 3 and has been shut down since then. He started playing catch earlier this week and will build up to long toss, bullpens, and then a rehab assignment. We’re still many weeks away from seeing him on a mound in Milwaukee.

Cortes landed on the injured list back on April 6 with a left elbow flexor strain and is facing an extended absence. He hasn’t resumed throwing yet and won’t make it back until at least early June. The procedural move frees up a spot on Milwaukee’s 40-man roster.
