Contreras won’t be heading to free agency since he remains arbitration-eligible for two additional seasons before reaching the open market in 2028. The 27-year-old backstop played through a fractured left middle finger for most of this past season, which clearly impacted his production at the dish, as he finished with an underwhelming .260/.355/.399 slash line with 17 homers and six steals in 150 games. He recently underwent surgery to address the finger on his glove hand and should be cleared to resume baseball activities at some point in December. He’ll be a top five catcher off the board in all fantasy drafts next spring.

Contreras fractured the finger in May and then played through it the rest of the way. A picture the catcher posted in September revealed that the finger still looked anything but normal, so surgery to allow him to play at 100 percent next year might be an option.

Contreras homered off Drew Pomeranz in the first, Andrew Vaughn took Colin Rea deep in the fourth and Brice Turang got to Andrew Kittredge in the seventh. The Cubs’ lone run also came on a homer from Seiya Suzuki in the second. For Contreras and Vaughn, it was their second homers in the five-game NLDS. The Brewers will now host the Dodgers in the NLCS, which begins Monday.

Contreras is good to go after missing a handful of games at the conclusion of the regular season with a lingering left hand issue. The other notable development for Milwaukee is manager Pat Murphy sticking with lefties Brice Turang and Christian Yelich near the top of the order with southpaw Matthew Boyd taking the ball for Chicago in this one. Here’s the full lineup: Jackson Chourio (LF), Turang (2B), Contreras (C), Yelich (DH), Andrew Vaughn (1B), Sal Frelick (RF), Caleb Durbin (3B), Blake Perkins (CF) and Joey Ortiz (SS).

Contreras sat out the final two games of the season with pain in his glove hand, which is the same hand where he has been playing through a fractured middle finger. Still, even if performance dips, he will be on the field in the NLDS. “No matter what the analysis is on that injury, he’s going to play,” said Murphy.

Milwaukee has elected to give Contreras some additional time off to rest and recover, despite his lobbying to get back into the lineup, after being hit by a swing on the left wrist during Saturday’s contest. The 27-year-old, who has been playing through a finger injury since early May, is dealing with some lingering soreness, but appears to have avoided serious injury since initial X-rays came back negative for any fractures. He’s day-to-day heading into the final week of the regular season.

Contreras was called for catcher’s interference on the play. He stayed in the game to finish the inning but was ultimately removed before the Brewers took the field the next inning. He’ll head for further evaluation and likely imaging to determine the extent of the injury. Expect the Brewers to provide an update on his status prior to Sunday’s series finale.

Contreras was scratched from the Brewers’ lineup on Wednesday due to a forearm contusion, but it sounds like he’s doing much better after a couple of nights off. Contreras will be re-evaluated prior to Friday’s pivotal series opener against the division-rival Cardinals. The 27-year-old ironman suffered the injury during Tuesday’s contest when he was hit by a pitch. It doesn’t appear to be a serious concern, but it’s a situation fantasy managers should continue monitoring.

Contreras is seemingly trying to fit a whole season’s worth of power into a month of play with 10 home runs in his last 30 games. He hit just six total in his prior 98 games. It feels like he’s gotten over his early season thumb injury in a big way and is one of the hottest hitters in the whole league.

Contreras also had another walk that didn’t come with the bases loaded. The first of his singles left his bat at 110.5 mph. While Contreras has been a big fantasy disappointment this season, probably because of his thumb injury, things are getting better. His hard-hit rate has gone from 38.8% in April and 40.6% in May to 45.5% in June, 55.4% in July and 63.9% so far in August.

Now that’s what we call stuffing the stat sheet. Contreras was an unstoppable force en route to tallying the first five-hit game of his career. They weren’t cheapies either, as he hit six of his seven balls in play at least 101 mph. He became the first player in the Statcast era to have six batted balls hit harder than 101 mph in the same game, an incredible display of power. Also, this was Contreras’ fourth straight multi-hit game and he’s jumped up from a .682 OPS on Monday to a .738 OPS right now. It looks he may have finally put the fractured finger he’s been playing with all season behind him.

Probably because of his bad finger, Contreras hasn’t been nearly the same hitters as usual this year, but maybe he’s figuring something out now. He was 4-for-4 producing hard-hit balls today. Last night, he was 3-for-4, with the other just missing, and on Monday, he had a 112.7-mph single, his hardest-hit ball since March 30. It all seems like a good sign.
