Contreras got the scoring started by doubling in Garrett Mitchell in the first and just kept going from there. It’s his sixth career four-hit game. He’s currently batting .288/.363/.432 with easily the best contract numbers of his career. His strikeout rate is just 11.4 percent, down from 18.2 percent last year and 21.7 percent for his career.

Contreras also drew a walk, and he scored two runs. He was in a middle of a 1-for-13 funk prior to Tuesday’s game, but the three-reach contest sees his slash improve to .272/.348/.388. Assuming good health, Contreras is essentially a lock to finish as one of the top fantasy catching options in 2026.

Sal Frelick and Joey Ortiz also find themselves on the Brewers’ bench for this one against Marlins’ right-hander Eury Perez. Contreras is off to a nice start at the plate this season, slashing a healthy .306/.398/.472 with a pair of homers and 11 RBI in his first 83 plate appearances.

With the Brewers trailing 1-0 in the eighth, the first two batters against Tyler Rogers reached on 48- and 61-mph bouncers in front of the plate. The second was called an error on catcher Brandon Valenzeula, who seemed to be hoping the ball would spin foul after a high hop but just died in the dirt. Contreras then singled in the first run with the grounder past the second baseman, and the second run scored on a groundout. It turned into a very tough loss for Rogers, who induced six straight grounders in the inning.

Jesse Rogers of ESPN adds that the hard-hitting backstop will earn $9.4 million in 2025, which is near the midpoint of the $9.9 million figure that Contreras filed at and the $8.55 million that the Brewers countered with. The deal also includes a $14.5 million club option for the 2027 season.

One would think the younger Contreras would be Venezuela’s catcher of choice, though that is the team’s deepest position; Salvaldor Perez has been the mainstay for the club, and the country has also produced Gabriel Moreno, Francisco Alvarez, Carlos Narváez and Freddy Fermin. Neither Contreras brother played for the team last time around in 2023. Willson could be the team’s best choice at first if he wants to play this time.

Contreras won’t be heading to free agency since he remains arbitration-eligible for two additional seasons before reaching the open market in 2028. The 27-year-old backstop played through a fractured left middle finger for most of this past season, which clearly impacted his production at the dish, as he finished with an underwhelming .260/.355/.399 slash line with 17 homers and six steals in 150 games. He recently underwent surgery to address the finger on his glove hand and should be cleared to resume baseball activities at some point in December. He’ll be a top five catcher off the board in all fantasy drafts next spring.

Contreras fractured the finger in May and then played through it the rest of the way. A picture the catcher posted in September revealed that the finger still looked anything but normal, so surgery to allow him to play at 100 percent next year might be an option.

Contreras homered off Drew Pomeranz in the first, Andrew Vaughn took Colin Rea deep in the fourth and Brice Turang got to Andrew Kittredge in the seventh. The Cubs’ lone run also came on a homer from Seiya Suzuki in the second. For Contreras and Vaughn, it was their second homers in the five-game NLDS. Contreras is good to go after missing a handful of games at the conclusion of the regular season with a lingering left hand issue. The other notable development for Milwaukee is manager Pat Murphy sticking with lefties Brice Turang and Christian Yelich near the top of the order with southpaw Matthew Boyd taking the ball for Chicago in this one. Here’s the full lineup: Jackson Chourio (LF), Turang (2B), Contreras (C), Yelich (DH), Andrew Vaughn (1B), Sal Frelick (RF), Caleb Durbin (3B), Blake Perkins (CF) and Joey Ortiz (SS).

Contreras sat out the final two games of the season with pain in his glove hand, which is the same hand where he has been playing through a fractured middle finger. Still, even if performance dips, he will be on the field in the NLDS. “No matter what the analysis is on that injury, he’s going to play,” said Murphy.

Milwaukee has elected to give Contreras some additional time off to rest and recover, despite his lobbying to get back into the lineup, after being hit by a swing on the left wrist during Saturday’s contest. The 27-year-old, who has been playing through a finger injury since early May, is dealing with some lingering soreness, but appears to have avoided serious injury since initial X-rays came back negative for any fractures. He’s day-to-day heading into the final week of the regular season.

Contreras was called for catcher’s interference on the play. He stayed in the game to finish the inning but was ultimately removed before the Brewers took the field the next inning. He’ll head for further evaluation and likely imaging to determine the extent of the injury. Expect the Brewers to provide an update on his status prior to Sunday’s series finale.

Contreras is seemingly trying to fit a whole season’s worth of power into a month of play with 10 home runs in his last 30 games. He hit just six total in his prior 98 games. It feels like he’s gotten over his early season thumb injury in a big way and is one of the hottest hitters in the whole league.
