Contreras collected a pair of RBI earlier in the contest before taking position player Weston Wilson deep for a garbage-time homer in the ninth inning. It counts all the same for fantasy managers, who certainly don’t mind a little stat-padding during the late stages of a one-sided affair. It was his fifth round-tripper of the season and second time he’s gone deep in the past week.

The 33-year-old slugger was held out of action on Wednesday after leaving Tuesday’s contest with soreness in his lower back. He’s feeling much better after an extended break with Thursday’s off-day though and is right back in there at first base and batting second against Casey Mize and the Tigers on Friday night.

Contreras was removed from Tuesday’s game with lower back soreness, which will keep him out for at least one game. As of now, there is no indication that the injury will require a trip to the injured list, but we will have more information on that in a couple of days. Andruw Monasterio will play first base and bat sixth for a Red Sox lineup that is really struggling right now.

Contreras left the contest in the fifth inning with the Red Sox trailing by five runs at the time. He finished 0-for-1 at the plate. It doesn’t sound like a serious concern, but there should be an update on his status after the contest. The 33-year-old first baseman has gotten off to a strong start in his Boston debut, hitting .298 (17-for-57) with three homers and 11 RBI in 17 games.

Contreras seemed to have former teammate Andre Pallente all out of sorts with the way he was crowding the plate today, and he had a homer and two singles within the first four innings. 15 games into his Red Sox career, he’s hitting .302/.448/.509 with three homers and 11 RBI.

After going 1-for-18 to start the season, Contreras has really started to come around. He now has hits in eight of his last ten games and has eight RBI on the season. Your buy-low window may have closed, but it could be worth making an offer just to see.

Contreras blasted a 362-foot shot at 105.3 mph in the ninth inning for his second home run of the season. He also has four RBI on the year and has started to turn it on of late after a slow start to the season. He should still be in for a solid season in Boston this year.

Contreras led off the second inning with a single off of Mick Abel, but he never advanced past first base. He then started a rally in the fourth by working Abel for a two-out walk and scored the Red Sox’ first run on a two-run single by Ceddanne Rafaela. The 33-year-old then delivered an RBI double in the sixth inning that extended the Red Sox’ lead to 3-0. He has been sizzling at the dish in Grapefruit League play, hitting .533 (8-for-15) with a pair of homers and seven RBI.

Red Sox rather ruled the day in this one; Ranger Suárez started and got the win for Venezuela, allowing one run in two innings, and Wilyer Abreu went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Marlins utilityman Javier Sanoja hit the lone homer. Venezuela has Israel and Nicaragua next on the schedule before the showdown with the Dominican Republic to end pool play. The Netherlands are probably going to need to upset the D.R. if they’re going to have a chance of advancing.

His home run was a 426-foot blast that left the bat at almost 108 mph. It’s a good reminder that the 33-year-old still put up elite bat speed last season and has yet to play his home games in a ballpark that’s as hitter-friendly as Fenway Park is. There’s a chance that Contreras puts up career-best numbers in 2026.

Contreras’ home run was a 385-foot shot that left the bat at 106.1 mph. The 33-year-old is set to begin his first season in Boston this year after coming off a year in which he had a near-identical wRC+ to Alex Bregman, who he is essentially replacing in the rotation. Despite being 33 years old last year, Contreras still had 95th-percentile bat speed and is moving into a nice home ballpark for a player with a 41% career pull rate. Contreras also spiked the highest fly ball rate of his career last year and the highest barrel rate he’s ever posted. The Red Sox have already announced that he will hit clean-up for them, which means Contreras could be a 25 HR bat with a .270 average on a good team that will give him solid counting stats.

Cora added that he’s reserving the right to change his mind, but his initial lineup projection has the newly-acquired veteran slugger occupying the cleanup spot. The 33-year-old’s arrival solves Boston’s first base quagmire and it’s a notable development from a counting stats perspective that he’ll be locked into the middle of their lineup, regardless of whether Alex Bregman returns. He should have plenty of opportunities from a run-production standpoint with Roman Anthony and Trevor Story serving as top-of-the-order table-setters next season. The big question heading into the late stages of the offseason is where Jarren Duran fits into the lineup if he’s on the roster once spring training opens up in early February.

The Cardinals are sending along $8 million. Since he received a $1 million bonus to waive his no-trade clause, Contreras is due to earn $42.5 million for two years or, if his 2028 club option is exercised, $55 million for three. After missing out on Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso, getting Contreras could be seen as a letdown for the Red Sox, but this is a truly excellent hitter who still might yet have a career year in him after being freed from catching duties. His OPS+s the last four years have ranged from 123 to 138, and he was still showing 95th-percentile bat speed at age 33 last season. This is also a nice little ballpark upgrade for him, adding to his fantasy value. He’ll probably be Boston’s first baseman on Opening Day, though he could do more DHing if the Red Sox trade an outfielder and Triston Casas proves more worthy of playing time than Masataka Yoshida.

The Cardinals will get righties Hunter Dobbins, Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita and will send Boston $8 million, according to Passan. Contreras, who is owed $41.5 million for the next two years or, if his option is picked up, $54 million for the next three, will apparently be waiving his no-trade clause to take over as Boston’s first baseman. That means Triston Casas could open up in Triple-A if healthy, though if he impresses in the spring, there’s also the chance the Red Sox could go with him and Contreras splitting time between first and DH. The Cardinals figure to install Alec Burleson at first, which would open an outfield spot back up for Jordan Walker alongside Lars Nootbarr and Victor Scott II. Contreras hit .257/.344/.447 with 20 homers in 135 games last season in his first year since giving up catching.

While the Red Sox are hopeful that Triston Casas will be able to return early during the 2026 season, it sounds like they’re trying to secure a backup plan just to be on the safe side. The Red Sox already completed one trade with the Cardinals — acquiring right-hander Sonny Gray — and it’s unclear if the discussions around Contreras were a part of those talks or a separate discussion. Even if a deal were to be consummated, the 33-year-old slugger holds a full no-trade clause and would need to approve the swap.

Contreras has two years and $36.5 million remaining on the five-year, $85 million contract he signed ahead of the 2023 season. That contract also has a club option for $17.5 million in 2028, so he is under contract for a reasonable amount of money for the next three years, which should be appealing to many teams. The 33-year-old hit .257/.344/.447 with 20 home runs, a career-high 70 runs, and a career-high 80 RBI in his first season as a first baseman. While the Cardinals are not eager to trade Contreras, as Woo noted, trading him “would open up first base full-time for Alec Burleson and could alleviate some payroll concerns.” This is a situation to monitor for the rebuilding Cardinals.

The injury had previously been reported as a biceps injury, but it appears the discomfort originated from the shoulder. While there is technically still enough time for Contreras to be activated from the IL and play in the regular season, we have to believe this effectively ends his 2025 season. His first season as a first baseman allowed him to have the most plate appearances he has had in his MLB career while slashing .257/.344/.447 with 20 home runs, 80 RBI, and five steals. He’ll no longer have catcher eligibility next season, so he’ll be a mid-tier first base option with some ceiling to his power upside.

Contreras will receive some additional time off to rest and recover this week after being diagnosed with a mild right biceps strain, according to Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol. The 33-year-old first baseman has been beat up physically the last few days as a result of being hit by a pitch on multiple occasions since returning from suspension. He figures to return at some point later this week. It’ll be Alec Burleson filling in at the cold corner in his absence.

Contreras has been dealing with biceps discomfort after being hit by a pitch over the weekend and the issue presumably flared up during this contest. He was 2-for-3 with an RBI and also stole a base prior to exiting. There should be an update on his status at some point after the game.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said he wants to give Contreras a break since he’s pretty beat up after being hit by a pitch on two separate occasions during Saturday’s contest. The 33-year-old veteran first baseman should be ready for Monday’s series opener against the division-rival Reds.

Contreras returns to St. Louis’ lineup after serving a league-issued suspension that was reduced from six games to four on appeal. The 33-year-old’s return should provide a lift for the Cardinals, who are barely hanging on in the race for the final NL Wild Card playoff berth.

Contereras won’t play again until Tuesday. With Alec Burleson on the IL, no one currently on the Cardinals’ active roster has started a game at first base this season. Nolan Gorman, though, has worked out at the position. He and Yohel Pozo could see starts there.

It’s unclear how many games he’s going to miss; he was suspended for six originally, but that might have been knocked down. The league has yet to comment, but Contreras is listed as suspended for tonight’s game.

Contreras is able to continue playing while waiting for the appeal process to play out after receiving a lengthy suspension earlier this week for his on-field meltdown following his ejection from Monday’s series opener at Busch Stadium. The widely-held expectation is that the league will issue a ruling on his appeal at some point this week.

Contreras also received an undisclosed fine for his on-field meltdown following an ejection from Monday’s game against the Pirates for arguing balls and strikes. The power-hitting 33-year-old has elected to appeal the suspension, so he remains in the lineup for Tuesday’s contest. There should be a ruling on the appeal at some point later this week.

The 33-year-old first baseman did his damage against Bryan Baker in the seventh inning, with his majestic 423-foot (107.0 mph EV) solo blast increasing the Cardinals’ lead to 7-3. He also singled in the opening inning. He’s having a very solid season in the middle of the Cardinals’ lineup, slashing .261/.345/.455 with 18 long balls, 68 RBI and four stolen bases.

Contreras was one of the few bright spots in this one as the Cardinals were flummoxed by hard-throwing Sandy Alcantara, who delivered arguably his finest start of the year against his former organization. The 33-year-old cut the deficit in half with a sixth-inning blast to left field. He struck out in all three of his other plate appearances. He’s notched five hits in three contests since returning from a four-game absence due to a foot issue.
