DeSclafani has been cut loose after struggling to a lackluster 5.12 ERA across 38 2/3 innings over 13 appearances (four starts). The 35-year-old veteran figures to pass through waivers unclaimed and head to free agency.

DeSclafani returns to Arizona’s pitching mix for Sunday’s game against the Red Sox. The 35-year-old righty has recorded a respectable 4.36 ERA across 33 innings over 11 appearances (four starts) in his Arizona debut this season.

DeSclafani will miss at least the next two weeks with the thumb injury, and assuming there’s no structural damage, there’s a decent chance he rejoins the D-backs’ pitching staff by the end of August.

DeSclafani surrendered a run in the second inning on two base hits and a groundout. A walk, single, and a sacrifice fly brought a second run in to score for the Rangers in the third. That would do it for DeSclafani after three innings at 52 pitches. He collected three strikeouts. The 35-year-old right-hander will take a 4.36 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and a 31/11 K/BB ratio across 33 innings into a start against the Rockies in Colorado on Sunday.

DeSclafani scattered three hits, and he didn’t walk anyone while picking up four strikeouts. It’s the deepest the 35-year-old has worked in a game in 2025, and he looked the part in an outing that reminded that DeSclafani isn’t all that long removed from being a decent fantasy option. He’ll have a chance to work deeper next Tuesday against the Rangers.

DeSclafani struck out four batters on the afternoon and didn’t allow a base on balls. He came on with the Diamondbacks leading by three runs in the seventh inning. The only run that he allowed came on an RBI double off the bat of Jordan Walker in the ninth. On the season, the 35-year-old hurler now holds a 4.66 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 21/4 K/BB ratio over 19 1/3 innings in seven appearances with the Diamondbacks. That makes two three-inning saves for DeSclafani this year, who shouldn’t be regarded as a real part of the Diamondbacks’ closer-by-committee.

DeSclafani struck out six and walked none. He actually faced the minimum through three before giving up solo homers to Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez in the fourth. He then hit a batter and gave up a single at the beginning of the fifth, and his day was over after that. Both runners came around to score against Jalen Beeks afterwards. This was just a spot start for DeSclafani, so he’ll return to the pen for now. However, he is probably next in line for the D-backs rotation if something opens up.

The Diamondbacks are going to push back their entire starting rotation for some extra rest, starting with Zac Gallen on Sunday afternoon, amid a stretch of 17 consecutive games without an off day. It’s a tough break for fantasy managers hoping for a two-start week for Gallen, who will get the ball for Monday’s series opener against the Padres instead. The 35-year-old journeyman has done a nice job in four appearances since signing with Arizona back on June 15, but he can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats.

DeSclafani struck out four and walked two. His velocity is creeping up some out of the pen, and he got 11 missed swings on his 45 pitches tonight. If he can stay healthy, it looks like he’ll be of assistance to the Diamondbacks, perhaps eventually as a starting pitcher.

DeSclafani opted out of his minor league contract with the Yankees earlier this week and winds up latching on with Arizona as extra organizational depth. The 35-year-old righty has made 180 appearances (169 starts) in the big leagues dating back to 2014.

He also struck out four and walked three on the day. The veteran right-hander missed all of last season after undergoing flexor tendon surgery, but he has a 4.20 ERA over 942 2/3 innings in his MLB career. Another poor start for Ryan Yarbrough could open up a short-term starting opportunity for DeSclafani until Luis Gil returns from the injured list.
