While it doesn’t completely rule out the Royals making a splash on the trade market, it doesn’t sound promising that anything is actually going to happen. Both Duran and Donovan have been generating plenty of buzz on the trade front and it sounds like the Royals just won’t have the right pieces in place to get a deal done.

Donovan made $2.85 million last season in his first year of arbitration. With two years to go before free agency, he’s been a hot topic in trade rumors, though the Cardinals still could keep him around as their primary second baseman.

The two teams — Chaim Bloom’s former club and his current club — have already swung a decade’s worth of deals in the last five months, with the Red Sox acquiring Steven Matz at the deadline and Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras in separate trades in the offseason. The Athletic recently placed the Giants and Mariners as the frontrunners for Donovan. The Red Sox and Rays are among the teams that have also sought Ketel Marte for second base, but while Marte is the better player, Donovan has a more varied market because of his ability to play several spots. The Red Sox would probably put Donovan at second, but having him at third and Marcelo Mayer at second might make more sense for them.

The Cardinals, who are in full rebuild mode, are seeking multiple prospects in return for the versatile 28-year-old. Where there’s this much smoke, there’s usually fire, so expect Donovan to be donning a new uniform by the time Opening Day rolls around.

Passan noted that the Cardinals “are not eager” to trade Donovan, but it might make too much sense given the rebuilding nature of the team. Donovan has two years of control left at very affordable arbitration rates before free agency and can play all over the field while producing solid on-base rates and good gap power. Passan puts the likelihood of Donovan being traded at 75 percent.

Rosenthal notes that the Pirates are clearly trying to add salary in advance of a potential new CBA that would require a salary floor. However, the Pirates are anticipating being “shunned” by free agents like Kyle Schwarber and even Jorge Polanco and Ryan O’Hearn, so they are also exploring trade options in order to find offense. While nothing is imminent here, it does appear to be a situation to monitor.

It seems likely that with the Cardinals heading into a rebuild, that they’ll look to move the versatile 28-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract. Goold also notes that the Dodgers and Yankees had interest in dealing for him at the trade deadline in 2025 and could circle back again this offseason. It’s looking increasingly likely that Donovan could be donning a new uniform on Opening Day in 2026.

Donovan, 28, dealt with a groin issue for much of the 2025 season, and the hope is that operation can help put those issues to rest. Assuming there’s no setbacks, he should be good to go for the start of the 2026 season.

As expected, Donovan will remain on the bench for St. Louis’ final two regular-season contests this weekend against the division-rival Cubs following their official elimination from playoff contention. The 28-year-old, who has been battling a lingering groin issue throughout the second half, put together one of the strongest seasons of his career, despite being limited to just 118 games due to injury. It’ll be righty-masher Nolan Gorman getting some additional run at the keystone to close out the regular season.

Now that the team is officially eliminated, Donovan will take it easy. He’s hit .378/.410/.649 in eight games since returning from a groin injury two weeks ago, though he’s remained day-to-day for much of that time. Barring a pinch-hitting appearance, he’ll finish up at .287/.353/.422 with 10 homers in 515 plate appearances. Despite being limited to 118 games, he leads Cardinals players with 2.7 bWAR, though part of that is because every Cardinals regular has missed time this year.

Donovan hasn’t been 100 percent for months, though that didn’t stop him from collecting five doubles in two games against the Giants this week. He’ll probably be back in there for the final two games of the season. Nolan Gorman is starting at second base today.

Donovan was a late scratch from Monday’s lineup due to general soreness. It wouldn’t be a complete shock if he winds up being shut down for the final handful of games this week with nothing to play for in St. Louis.

Donovan takes a seat with lefty Jose Quintana on the mound for Milwaukee after going 3-for-10 with his 10th home run of the season in a pair of contests since returning from the injured list. It’ll be José Fermín filling in at the keystone in this one.

Donovan led off the third inning with a 396-foot (104.7 mph EV) solo shot off of Jacob Misiorowski that increased the Cardinals’ lead to 3-0. He also singled as part of the team’s two-run uprising in the sixth inning. He’s enjoying a very solid season atop the Cardinals’ lineup, slashing .279/.348/.406 with 10 homers, 46 RBI and three stolen bases across his 487 plate appearances.

Donovan had been shelved since August 15 due to a left groin strain. Before landing on the injured list, he was hitting .279/.348/.402 with nine homers, 45 RBI and three stolen bases in his first 476 plate appearances on the season. Donovan finally lands on the injured list after being held out of the lineup in seven of the club’s last nine games due to ongoing groin and foot issues. The versatile 28-year-old has had a phenomenal season, hitting .279/.348/.402 with 57 runs scored, nine homers, 45 RBI and three steals in 110 games. He’ll get some extra time off to put the issues to bed. His absence opens the door for rookie Thomas Saggese to continue playing regularly at the keystone.

Donovan remains on the bench for the seventh time in the last nine games as he deals with ongoing foot and groin issues. There’s a list teams can place players on to address these types of extended absences, but the Cardinals apparently aren’t going to use it here. Thomas Saggese gets another start at the keystone on Monday night.

There’s been zero indication that Donovan will require a trip to the injured list, but he’s going to remain stapled to the bench for the sixth time in the last eight games due to ongoing foot and groin issues. It’ll be Thomas Saggese drawing another start at the keystone in his place.

Donovan remains out for the fourth time in the last six games as he continues to battle lingering foot and groin issues. The Cardinals appear content to continue playing short-handed for the moment, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Donovan get some extra time off to finally put the ongoing issues to bed. It’ll be rookie Thomas Saggese handling the keystone on Saturday night in his absence.

Donovan was out of the lineup for a third straight day because of left groin soreness, but he stayed in to run and played an inning of second base after the double. It’d seem to bode well for him being in Tuesday’s lineup, though since the Cardinals are facing a lefty in Kyle Freeland, another day off wouldn’t be the worst idea. Donovan is hitting just .216/.287/.313 versus southpaws this season.

It’s the third straight game that the 28-year-old has missed since being scratched from Saturday’s lineup with left groin soreness. There aren’t any plans yet to place him on the injured list, but if this lingers for another day or two the Cardinals may have to change course. Thomas Saggese will once again start in his place at second base and will bat seventh for the Cardinals against Rockies’ right-hander Chase Dollander.

Donovan remains on the bench for the second straight contest after being scratched from Saturday’s lineup with left groin soreness. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. It’ll be rookie Thomas Saggese taking over at the keystone in his absence with Masyn Winn in the leadoff spot once again.

Donovan was set to leadoff Saturday’s game, but the injury will prevent him from playing — or at least starting — that contest. Thomas Saggese is now starting at second base. Even if Donovan is day-to-day, there’s a good chance he doesn’t play Sunday as a precaution.
