The positive news here is that it doesn’t sound like a potential injured list situation with Donovan is officially day-to-day following an early exit from Friday’s game with left hip tightness. The 29-year-old infielder dealt with some groin discomfort earlier this month and has implied that the lower-body issues might be related to the sports hernia surgery he underwent last October. He’s gotten off to an excellent start in his Mariners debut, hitting .304/.437/.518 with three homers, eight RBI and one steal through 18 games.

Donovan was not able to play Friday due to the illness, and he’ll get at least one more day off while recovering Saturday. Consider Donovan day-to-day with a good chance to get back in the lineup Sunday against Houston, and if not the series finale Monday.

Donovan had been feeling a bit under the weather so the Mariners thought it wise to give him the night off. Leo Rivas will start in his place at third base and bat ninth while J.P. Crawford serves as the M’s leadoff hitter against Tatsuya Imai and the Astros on Friday evening in Seattle.

Donovan jumped on Nathan Eovaldi right away, taking the first pitch of the game deep to right field for a solo blast. He added a base hit in the third for his second hit of the game. The home run was the third of the season for the 29-year-old infielder. While not exactly known as a power hitter, Donovan is pulling the ball more than ever. If he can sustain that profile, he could certainly tap into more power than he’s previously displayed, with a career-high 14 in 2024.

Donovan returns to Seattle’s leadoff spot following a two-game absence due to groin soreness. It’s an extremely encouraging development that the 29-year-old second baseman managed to avoid a trip to the injured list. He’s gotten off to a sizzling-hot start at the plate in his Mariners debut, hitting .370 (10-for-27) with two homers, four RBI and one steal through eight games.

Donovan will go through pregame drills on the field on Sunday, but he wants to be extra cautious after undergoing double sports hernia surgery last year. He’s encouraged that his MRI came back clean and is expected to avoid the injured list, it’s just going to take him another day or two before he rejoins the lineup.

It sounds like Donovan, who was relieved to find no problem related to the hernia surgery he had after last season, might be back in there Sunday or Monday. Leo Rivas is playing third base in his place tonight.

Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports that Donovan underwent imaging Saturday, and the team is still processing the results. The 29-year-old will miss the the contest against the Angels, and if he does need a trip on the injured list, it could open up a spot for top prospect Colt Emerson. Fantasy managers should be prepared.

Donovan exited Saturday’s game with leg discomfort, and he unsurprisingly will miss at least one more contest. Luke Raley is moving up to the leadoff spot with Donovan out, and Leo Rivas will handle third base and hit ninth.

The Mariners didn’t have much to say about the injury after the game. Donovan left in the seventh inning after his leg came down awkwardly on the first-base bag while trying to leg out a grounder. If Donovan is unavailable Saturday, the Mariners would likely start utility specialist Leo Rivas at third base. An extended absence could potentially open the door for top prospect Colt Emerson, who has been playing third base down at Triple-A Tacoma.

Donovan might have tweaked an ankle stepping on first base while trying to beat out a grounder. He’s probably day-to-day, but if it does turn out to be something significant, Colt Emerson could join the Mariners sooner than expected.

Donovan’s career high for homers is 14, but he already has two this year. Even more fascinating is that he’s already tried two steals, converting one of them. While Donovan was a very good regular for St. Louis, the lack of homers and steals always left him with little fantasy value. Last year, he had 10 homers and three steals in 2025. In his best season in 2024, he had 14 homers and five steals. We wouldn’t necessarily expect him to best that homer total this year, but if he’s more aggressive on the basepaths, it’d be great for his fantasy value. It just might not be too good for the Mariners, since he’s been caught on 13 of his 29 career steal attempts.

Donovan has had an outstanding spring, hitting .452 with a pair of steals in 11 contests. The 29-year-old second baseman appears to be locked into Seattle’s leadoff spot, which is a definite boost to his fantasy appeal. He’ll be a late-round pick in fantasy drafts based on his limited upside, but he offers some serious appeal as a well-rounded source of batting average and runs scored.

The important variable for fantasy managers is that Donovan continues to lead off for the Mariners this spring, which should lead to a ton of runs scored batting ahead of Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodríguez and Josh Naylor in the regular season. The 29-year-old has gotten off to a sizzling-hot start this spring, hitting .429 (9-for-21) through eight games. He’s shaping up to be an excellent value in the late rounds of fantasy drafts this spring as a standout contributor in the runs scored and batting average departments.

Donovan became the Mariners’ first baserunner in the ballgame with a leadoff double off of Juan Morillo to open the fourth inning. He never advanced past second base though. The 29-year-old infielder also singled in the fifth inning, but Rhlyan Thomas was cut down at the plate attempting to score on the play. He’s off to a solid start with his new ballclub this spring, hitting .500 (9-for-18) with one RBI and one stolen base.

Donovan singled twice and is now slashing .467/.529/.467 in his limited spring action. The former St. Louis stalwart is going to hit at the top of the lineup in 2026, and with players like Cal Raleigh, Josh Naylor and Randy Arozarena — just to name a few — capable of driving him in, he could be in for a big fantasy campaign as long as he gets on base enough. And he should.

The 29-year-old infielder plated a run with a fielder’s choice in the second inning. He then singled and raced home on a Cal Raleigh RBI double in the fourth. Donovan is off to a hot start with his new ballclub, batting .600 (3-for-5) with an RBI and a pair of runs scored through his first two games. He batted leadoff for the M’s once again in this one and it seems like that’s where he’ll be situated to open the season.

The pick is lined up to 68th or 69th overall. Donovan was connected to Seattle all winter, and the Mariners get him arguably without including any of their top five prospects. As things stand now, he’d seem to project as their third baseman and leadoff man. However, if top prospect Cole Emerson makes a run at the third base job in spring training, Donovan could play second or left. That versatility makes him an especially nice fit in a lineup with a few question marks. Donovan hit .287/.353/.422 and made the NL All-Star team last season. He’s never been a big fantasy infielder because of his lack of homers (career high of 14 in 2024) and steals (career high of five in 2023 and ’24), and moving to Seattle doesn’t figure to help him any. Randy Arozarena could also lose some fantasy value here; he ended last year in the leadoff spot but could drop as low as fifth in the lineup now. Cole Young’s status as the favorite to start at second base is also probably a little shakier, but he’s not a mixed-league guy anyway.

It’s a three-team deal that will send Mariners prospects Jurrangelo Cijinte and Tai Peete to the Cardinals, says Adam Jude of the Seattle Times, and third baseman Ben Williamson from the Mariners to the Rays, according to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale. The Rays will be parting with outfielder Colton Ledbetter and a Comp B draft pick (slated to be the 72nd or 73rd pick overall), with both going to the Cardinals. Donovan, who has been part of trade rumors all winter, seems likely to play third for Seattle with Williamson gone, though he’s also very much an option at second base and in left field. The Mariners would have the 2025 NL All-Star under control for the next two years.

While this report doesn’t completely rule out the Royals making a splash on the trade market, it doesn’t sound promising that anything is actually going to happen. Both Duran and Donovan have been generating plenty of buzz on the trade front and it sounds like the Royals just won’t have the right pieces in place to get a deal done.

Donovan made $2.85 million last season in his first year of arbitration. With two years to go before free agency, he’s been a hot topic in trade rumors, though the Cardinals still could keep him around as their primary second baseman.

The two teams — Chaim Bloom’s former club and his current club — have already swung a decade’s worth of deals in the last five months, with the Red Sox acquiring Steven Matz at the deadline and Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras in separate trades in the offseason. The Athletic recently placed the Giants and Mariners as the frontrunners for Donovan. The Red Sox and Rays are among the teams that have also sought Ketel Marte for second base, but while Marte is the better player, Donovan has a more varied market because of his ability to play several spots. The Red Sox would probably put Donovan at second, but having him at third and Marcelo Mayer at second might make more sense for them.

The Cardinals, who are in full rebuild mode, are seeking multiple prospects in return for the versatile 28-year-old. Where there’s this much smoke, there’s usually fire, so expect Donovan to be donning a new uniform by the time Opening Day rolls around.

Passan noted that the Cardinals “are not eager” to trade Donovan, but it might make too much sense given the rebuilding nature of the team. Donovan has two years of control left at very affordable arbitration rates before free agency and can play all over the field while producing solid on-base rates and good gap power. Passan puts the likelihood of Donovan being traded at 75 percent.

Rosenthal notes that the Pirates are clearly trying to add salary in advance of a potential new CBA that would require a salary floor. However, the Pirates are anticipating being “shunned” by free agents like Kyle Schwarber and even Jorge Polanco and Ryan O’Hearn, so they are also exploring trade options in order to find offense. While nothing is imminent here, it does appear to be a situation to monitor.

It seems likely that with the Cardinals heading into a rebuild, that they’ll look to move the versatile 28-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract. Goold also notes that the Dodgers and Yankees had interest in dealing for him at the trade deadline in 2025 and could circle back again this offseason. It’s looking increasingly likely that Donovan could be donning a new uniform on Opening Day in 2026.
