Burns struck out five of the first six batters tonight and faced just one over the minimum through three innings before giving up a leadoff homer to Ben Rice in the fourth. He later surrendered a two-run triple to Anthony Volpe, though it really should have been a single; Rece Hinds dove for a ball in right field that he had no chance of catching. Burns went without issuing a walk tonight. He got 12 whiffs: six on 48 fastballs and six on 24 sliders. His heated topped out at 100.1 mph and averaged 98.1 mph, which is right where he was at in Triple-A, too. All in all, it was a pretty impressive showing. He’ll make his next start in Fenway next week, probably in a matchup with Garrett Crochet.

After just 13 starts and 66 innings in the minors to open his career, Burns, the second-overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, will make his major league debut against the Yankees on Tuesday night. The 22-year-old top pitching prospect arrives having posted a microscopic 1.77 ERA and 89/13 K/BB across three minor league levels this season.

Burns was the second-overall pick in the 2025 draft, and is viewed as one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. The 22-year-old has registered a 1.77 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 89/13 K/BB ratio over his 66 innings. There’s obviously risk with any rookie pitcher and the Yankees’ lineup presents challenges — one large one in particular — but his fantasy upside competes with any young pitcher in baseball. Could be fun.

Burns was the second-overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, and is viewed as one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. The hard-throwing 22-year-old has registered a pristine 1.77 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 89/13 K/BB ratio over 66 innings (13 starts) between Triple-A Louisville and Double-A Chattanooga. There’s obviously risk with any rookie pitcher and the Yankees’ lineup presents challenges — one large one in particular — but his fantasy upside competes with any young pitcher in baseball. He’s worthy of a speculative pickup in all fantasy formats.

Burns continues to look like the best pitching prospect in baseball. The hard-throwing 22-year-old has allowed just three runs with a 14/4 K/BB ratio across 12 1/3 innings (two starts) since arriving on the doorstep of the majors. He’s blazed through three levels in Cincinnati’s system this year, compiling a surreal 1.77 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 89/13 K/BB ratio over 66 innings (13 starts). He could wind up arriving in the big leagues at some point in the second half, especially if he keeps dominating at the Triple-A level.

Burns averaged 97.1 mph with his fastball in his first Triple-A start, topping out at 98.6 mph, and the 29 sliders he threw produced six whiffs and nine called strikes. The 2024 first-round pick figures to make his MLB debut at some point this season.

The second overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, Burns has dominated at Double-A, registering a 1.29 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, and 55 strikeouts in 42 innings. He’s the Reds’ top prospect and the 11th-ranked prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. The Reds will likely give him a few starts at Triple-A, but if the team trades Nick Martinez and/or Wade Miley before the trade deadline, Burns could see some MLB starts at the end of the season.

There’s a legitimate argument for pushing Burns ahead of Bubba Chandler and Andrew Painter as the top pitching prospect in the fantasy landscape. The second-overall selection from the 2024 MLB Draft retired 17 consecutive batters to open his latest outing and was still hitting 98 mph during his seventh inning of work. He allowed just three singles over seven frames and didn’t hand out a free pass. The 22-year-old phenom holds a microscopic 1.68 ERA and 75/9 K/BB ratio across 53 2/3 innings (11 starts) this season between Double-A Chattanooga and High-A Dayton. He might be ready to pitch in the big leagues by the second half.

Burns allowed just three baserunners and needed just 82 pitches to navigate six frames in the longest start of his professional debut. The hard-throwing 22-year-old, who was the second-overall pick in last year’s MLB Draft, has looked like one of the top handful of pitching prospects in the sport over the last few weeks, recording a sparkling 1.54 ERA and 49/4 K/BB ratio across 35 innings (seven starts) at the Double-A level. He’s unlikely to reach the majors this season, but based on his current trajectory, he’s the odds-on favorite to finish the year as the top pitching prospect left in the minors.
