Dunning gave up three earned runs in 3 1/3 innings during his latest stint with the Braves. He’ll only be eligible to return this season if another pitcher lands on the injured list, so unless that happens, he’ll finish up with a 6.97 ERA in 20 2/3 innings between Texas and Atlanta.

The 30-year-old hurler was up with the big league club for just two days and will head back to Triple-A to make room on the roster for Cal Quantrill who was scooped up off of waivers from the Marlins on Thursday. Dunning has posted a 12.15 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and an 8/2 K/BB ratio over 6 2/3 innings in five appearances with the Braves this season.

Dunning came over from the Rangers back in mid-July and was shipped back to the minors after being crushed for five runs without recording an out back on July 31. The 30-year-old righty will operate in low leverage spots for Atlanta.

Dunning had been optioned back to Triple-A Round Rock by the Rangers just before the All-Star break while Ruiz had been removed from the Braves’ 40-man roster in late June, so this is a swap of two intriguing arms who could benefit from a change of scenery. Given the Braves’ list of injured starting pitchers, it shouldn’t take Dunning long to get a real look there, making him a potentially intriguing option in deeper mixed leagues.

Dunning pitched on two of the last three days for the Rangers and was unlikely to be available on Friday, so he was swapped out for a fresh arm in Caleb Boushley. He could get another opportunity with the big league club in relatively short order. In five appearances with the Rangers this season, Dunning holds a 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 10/5 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings.

Dunning provides Texas’ overworked bullpen with a badly-needed fresh arm in the wake of four consecutive extra-inning contests. The 30-year-old righty has operated in long relief this season out of the Rangers’ bullpen, recording a respectable 5.40 ERA across five innings (two appearances).

Dunning was with the big league club for just a couple of days this time around to add length to their bullpen, but he’ll head back to Triple-A Round Rock with Nathan Eovaldi returning from the injured list on Friday. He’ll return to a starting role at the Triple-A level where he’ll work on refining his craft until his number is called once again.

Dunning had a 4.47 ERA in 46 1/3 innings as a starter for Round Rock. It looks like he could make a spot start Tuesday against the Orioles, assuming that he’s not needed in relief tonight. He probably won’t be, given that the Rangers used only one reliever Sunday and just sent him down to make room for Dunning.

Dunning was unclaimed after being designated for assignment Wednesday. The 30-year-old will rhead back to Triple-A as a depth piece, and he’ll be need to be added to the 40-man roster if Texas wants him in the majors.

Dunning winds up losing his spot on Texas’ active roster due to a roster crunch created by an injury to backup catcher Kyle Higashioka. The 30-year-old righty figures to pass through waivers unclaimed, but there’s a chance another team out there is willing to roll the dice.

Dunning rejoins the Rangers’ relief mix just a couple weeks after being jettisoned from the club’s 40-man roster altogether. The 30-year-old righty failed to make Texas’ season-opening roster, but he’ll get another look in long relief after posting a pedestrian 5.40 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 21/9 K/BB ratio across 20 innings (five starts) for Triple-A Round Rock in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats.
