No surprise here with Tigers lefty ace Tarik Skubal toeing the rubber at Fenway Park. Losing Romy Gonzalez to a shoulder injury, in addition to Rob Refsnyder departing via free agency in the offseason, has led to some serious issues for the Red Sox against southpaws this season. Duran heads to the bench along with Masataka Yoshida and Marcelo Mayer while Trevor Story moves to DH. It’ll be Andruw Monasterio at shortstop, Caleb Durbin at the hot corner and Isiah Kiner-Falefa at the keystone. It’s not great.

Masataka Yoshida was in the third spot tonight, as the Red Sox try to keep finding ways to insert him into the lineup. Yoshida had two hits tonight, but the Red Sox also gave up a run in the first that wouldn’t have scored as Ceddanne Rafaela been playing center instead of being on the bench. Duran’s 0-for-4 came with some extra concern, as he was caught flipping off a spectator after an eighth-inning groundout. It sounded like the person deserved it, but it still might cost Duran a couple of games.

Duran’s stung the ball 112.2 mph. Let’s see if it’s enough to keep him in the lineup on Tuesday with Alex Cora surely itching to get Masataka Yoshida back in there.

Duran takes a seat for just the second time this season with Masataka Yoshida in left field to face Brewers righty Brandon Woodruff. The 29-year-old has gotten off to an extremely slow start at the dish, hitting .200 (6-for-30) with two extra-base hits, four RBI and two steals through eight games.

It’ll be Masataka Yoshida getting a chance at DH in his place. Caleb Durbin is also on the bench with Andruw Monasterio at the hot corner. It qualifies as a mild surprise to see Duran on the bench with Astros ace Hunter Brown on the hill. The 29-year-old outfielder is off to a frosty start at the plate, hitting .154 (2-for-13) with zero extra-base hits and two steals through four games.

Duran’s single was the game’s hardest-hit ball at 109.6 mph. He also had the game’s farthest-hit ball, but it turned into a 401-foot flyout to center. Statcast had it as a homer in 16 MLB ballparks. Duran was leading off today with Roman Anthony still playing for Team USA, but he’s likely to hit third to begin the regular season.

Two homers off a lefty from a player who totaled three of those all of last year. Duran was 7-for-12 with three homers in Red Sox camp and is now 5-for-10 with three homers in WBC play. The Red Sox had him available in trade talks all winter, but it might prove fortunate for them that no one met their asking price.

Duran has gone deep a staggering three times in his last two spring contests with each round-tripper topping 400 feet, per Statcast. The 29-year-old fantasy standout will be a top-20 range outfielder in all drafts this spring as he boasts realistic 20-homer, 25-steal upside, especially in hitter-friendly Fenway Park. His batting average dipped last season and appears unlikely to return to previously elite levels, and his struggles against lefties takes a chunk out of his counting stats potential. Still, there’s a lot to like from a power/speed combo standpoint especially since he’s slated to bat in the heart of Boston’s lineup.

Despite plenty of offseason trade talk, Duran remains in Boston and figures to be a regular starter entering the season as the team shuffles their four outfielders around three spots and the DH role. After a career year in 2024, Duran predictably took a small step back in 2025, posting a .256/.332/.442 slash line with 16 home runs and 24 steals. His swinging strike rate also went up two percent, and his overall contact rate fell about five percent. He may never reach those 2024 highs again, but Duran has a solid five-category skill set for fantasy baseball.

Rosenthal reports that “The Royals are under the impression Duran would cost them left-hander Cole Ragans,” who the Red Sox will most certainly ask for as part of a deal. However, Rosenthal also noted that “the Red Sox view the initial talks as more informal and exploratory, according to people briefed on the conversations.” These two teams have been circling each other for a while, but it doesn’t seem like anything is imminent.

Arozarena went 9-for-20 with a homer and nine RBI in the 2023 WBC. Duran played behind Alek Thomas in center and finished 0-for-5. He’ll of course be a starter this time. In 2023, the other outfield spot went to Alex Verdugo, so a change is probably coming there. Perhaps young Rangers outfielder Alejandro Osuna could join the mix.

Passan notes that the Red Sox “are valuing Duran more like the seven-win player of 2024 than his 4-win version in 2025"; however, he also notes that Duran “has a ton of trade value because he’s still in his 20s and has three years of control.” Even if 2024 was an outlier, Duran has elite baserunning abilities and has been a solid run-producer atop the Red Sox lineup. With Wilyer Abreu proving to be a better defender and also being younger, it seems more likely that the Red Sox deal Duran this winter.

The Red Sox have a full outfield with Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu. They also have Jhostynxon García and Kristian Campbell at Triple-A, so the 29-year-old Duran certainly seems like the odd man out. Nightengale reports that “the Red Sox believe that they need an upgrade over Duran, and that he needs a fresh start.” His name seems likely to come up in rumors all offseason as the Red Sox look to acquire an impact starting pitcher.

This turned out to be a much smoother process than last year, when the two sides couldn’t come to terms before arbitration requests were submitted. They did, however, do a one-year deal with an $8 million option before a hearing. This new contract again avoids arbitration and comes with a slightly smaller salary than the option, though we assume Duran is still getting his $100,000 buyout. Duran, a Super Two player last year, remains under team control through 2028. He could be a trade candidate this winter as a result of Ramon Anthony’s emergence.

Bowden notes that the dynamic 29-year-old outfielder’s name continues to pop up in trade rumors and mentions the Phillies, Tigers, Dodgers, Guardians and Rangers as teams that are known to have interest in his services. Duran is under team control through the 2028 season, so it would take a hefty package of prospects to pry him away from the Red Sox.

Duran smacked an RBI double off of the Green Monster off of Chris Paddack in the fourth inning, giving the Red Sox a 4-3 lead. That would wind up being the extent of the scoring in the ballgame. The dynamic 29-year-old outfielder finishes the regular season slashing .256/.332/.442 with 16 homers, 84 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 696 plate appearances.

Duran delivered an RBI single off of Kyle Finnegan in the eighth inning that pulled the Red Sox even at 3-3 and set the stage for them to walk it off the following frame. It was Duran’s only hit in four at-bats on the night, though he also saved a couple of runs with an outstanding catch in left field in the first inning. For the season, the dynamic 29-year-old outfielder is hitting .257/.333/.442 with 16 homers, 83 RBI and 24 stolen bases across 691 plate appearances.

It’s the lowest he’s hit since May 2024, but it’s better than sitting against a southpaw, like he did on Saturday. Duran has an .877 OPS against righties this season, but he’s come in at just .581 versus lefties.

It’s Duran’s first appearance in right field since the 2022 campaign. Red Sox manager Alex Cora hinted that Wilyer Abreu (calf) has a good chance to return next week, so we’re not anticipating Duran spending too much additional time as Roman Anthony’s replacement. It’s an interesting short-term solution to get Ceddanne Rafaela back in center field.

The homer was a line drive to right center that wound up in the triangle at Fenway Park, and he was able to score standing up. It was his 14th homer to go along with 35 doubles and 12 triples. The only negative today was that he was caught stealing for the first time since May 17; he had been 10-for-10 since.

Duran put the exclamation point on Boston’s five-run explosion against Royals lefty Bailey Falter during the opening frame by tattooing a no-doubter to straightaway center field. It was his 12th home run of the season and third time he’s left the yard in his last five games.

Duran takes a seat against a tough left-hander with Red Sox manager Alex Cora rolling with Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu in the outfield. It’ll be Rob Refsnyder at DH and occupying the leadoff spot with Anthony batting third for the second straight contest.

There hasn’t been much trade speculation here lately, so it looks like Duran is staying put in Boston. He is 11-for-24 with eight extra-base hits, eight RBI and two steals in his last six games. His current .793 OPS is his high mark of the season.

Duran clobbered a gargantuan 446-foot homer against Twins reliever Michael Tonkin for his 10th big fly of the season before picking up his 18th theft a couple frames later. The 28-year-old outfielder has been the subject of persistent trade rumors, but the Red Sox currently occupy the third Wild Card spot in the American League and are also within shouting distance of the AL East division lead.

It’s a good thing the Red Sox included Duran in tonight’s lineup against Clayton Kershaw after sitting him two of the previous three times they faced lefties. It’s Duran’s first two-triple game in the majors, and it comes before his first two-homer game. He now has 12 triples, placing him one behind Corbin Carroll for the major league lead. Last year, Duran led the majors with 14, but it looks like it will take a bigger number this season.

It’s the second straight time Duran has taken a seat against a lefty starter. He’s can’t complain much, given that he’s hit .209/.241/.324 versus southpaws this season. Still, we don’t see the point of making room for Masataka Yoshida, who also hasn’t been very good against southpaws as a major leaguer, and weakening the defense by putting Duran on the bench.

Duran got the game started with a 365-foot home run off Zack Wheeler for his ninth home run of the season and 51st RBI. Unfortunately, his last at-bat of the game was a dreadful plate appearance in the 10th inning. With the ghost runner on second base and nobody out, Duran chased a 2-0 fastball that was well above the strike zone, watched a fastball down the middle on the next pitch, and then struck out to end the at-bat without moving the runner over. The Red Sox would not score in the inning and then lose in the bottom half. Duran has just a .257/.323/.433 slash line on the year and remains the most likely outfielder to be traded to free up Boston’s logjam.

No surprise to see Duran taking a seat with lefty Shota Imanaga taking the ball on Saturday night at Wrigley Field. It’ll be lefty-masher Rob Refsnyder taking over in left field and getting a shot in the leadoff spot with Ceddanne Rafaela patrolling center field and top prospect Roman Anthony over Wilyer Abreu in right field.
