The Red Sox have a full outfield with Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu. They also have Jhostynxon García and Kristian Campbell at Triple-A, so the 29-year-old Duran certainly seems like the odd man out. Nightengale reports that “the Red Sox believe that they need an upgrade over Duran, and that he needs a fresh start.” His name seems likely to come up in rumors all offseason as the Red Sox look to acquire an impact starting pitcher.

This turned out to be a much smoother process than last year, when the two sides couldn’t come to terms before arbitration requests were submitted. They did, however, do a one-year deal with an $8 million option before a hearing. This new contract again avoids arbitration and comes with a slightly smaller salary than the option, though we assume Duran is still getting his $100,000 buyout. Duran, a Super Two player last year, remains under team control through 2028. He could be a trade candidate this winter as a result of Ramon Anthony’s emergence.

Bowden notes that the dynamic 29-year-old outfielder’s name continues to pop up in trade rumors and mentions the Phillies, Tigers, Dodgers, Guardians and Rangers as teams that are known to have interest in his services. Duran is under team control through the 2028 season, so it would take a hefty package of prospects to pry him away from the Red Sox.

Masataka Yoshida, Wilyer Abreu and Nathaniel Lowe are all on the bench tonight, replaced by Rob Refsnyder at DH, Nate Eaton in right field and Nick Sogard at second base (Romy Gonzalez is at first).

Duran smacked an RBI double off of the Green Monster off of Chris Paddack in the fourth inning, giving the Red Sox a 4-3 lead. That would wind up being the extent of the scoring in the ballgame. The dynamic 29-year-old outfielder finishes the regular season slashing .256/.332/.442 with 16 homers, 84 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 696 plate appearances.

Duran delivered an RBI single off of Kyle Finnegan in the eighth inning that pulled the Red Sox even at 3-3 and set the stage for them to walk it off the following frame. It was Duran’s only hit in four at-bats on the night, though he also saved a couple of runs with an outstanding catch in left field in the first inning. For the season, the dynamic 29-year-old outfielder is hitting .257/.333/.442 with 16 homers, 83 RBI and 24 stolen bases across 691 plate appearances.

It’s the lowest he’s hit since May 2024, but it’s better than sitting against a southpaw, like he did on Saturday. Duran has an .877 OPS against righties this season, but he’s come in at just .581 versus lefties.

It’s Duran’s first appearance in right field since the 2022 campaign. Red Sox manager Alex Cora hinted that Wilyer Abreu (calf) has a good chance to return next week, so we’re not anticipating Duran spending too much additional time as Roman Anthony’s replacement. It’s an interesting short-term solution to get Ceddanne Rafaela back in center field.

The homer was a line drive to right center that wound up in the triangle at Fenway Park, and he was able to score standing up. It was his 14th homer to go along with 35 doubles and 12 triples. The only negative today was that he was caught stealing for the first time since May 17; he had been 10-for-10 since.

Duran put the exclamation point on Boston’s five-run explosion against Royals lefty Bailey Falter during the opening frame by tattooing a no-doubter to straightaway center field. It was his 12th home run of the season and third time he’s left the yard in his last five games.

Duran takes a seat against a tough left-hander with Red Sox manager Alex Cora rolling with Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu in the outfield. It’ll be Rob Refsnyder at DH and occupying the leadoff spot with Anthony batting third for the second straight contest.

There hasn’t been much trade speculation here lately, so it looks like Duran is staying put in Boston. He is 11-for-24 with eight extra-base hits, eight RBI and two steals in his last six games. His current .793 OPS is his high mark of the season.

Duran clobbered a gargantuan 446-foot homer against Twins reliever Michael Tonkin for his 10th big fly of the season before picking up his 18th theft a couple frames later. The 28-year-old outfielder has been the subject of persistent trade rumors, but the Red Sox currently occupy the third Wild Card spot in the American League and are also within shouting distance of the AL East division lead.

It’s a good thing the Red Sox included Duran in tonight’s lineup against Clayton Kershaw after sitting him two of the previous three times they faced lefties. It’s Duran’s first two-triple game in the majors, and it comes before his first two-homer game. He now has 12 triples, placing him one behind Corbin Carroll for the major league lead. Last year, Duran led the majors with 14, but it looks like it will take a bigger number this season.

It’s the second straight time Duran has taken a seat against a lefty starter. He’s can’t complain much, given that he’s hit .209/.241/.324 versus southpaws this season. Still, we don’t see the point of making room for Masataka Yoshida, who also hasn’t been very good against southpaws as a major leaguer, and weakening the defense by putting Duran on the bench.

Duran got the game started with a 365-foot home run off Zack Wheeler for his ninth home run of the season and 51st RBI. Unfortunately, his last at-bat of the game was a dreadful plate appearance in the 10th inning. With the ghost runner on second base and nobody out, Duran chased a 2-0 fastball that was well above the strike zone, watched a fastball down the middle on the next pitch, and then struck out to end the at-bat without moving the runner over. The Red Sox would not score in the inning and then lose in the bottom half. Duran has just a .257/.323/.433 slash line on the year and remains the most likely outfielder to be traded to free up Boston’s logjam.

No surprise to see Duran taking a seat with lefty Shota Imanaga taking the ball on Saturday night at Wrigley Field. It’ll be lefty-masher Rob Refsnyder taking over in left field and getting a shot in the leadoff spot with Ceddanne Rafaela patrolling center field and top prospect Roman Anthony over Wilyer Abreu in right field.

It wasn’t clear if Duran would play tonight after the Red Sox said Masataka Yoshida would DH and Roman Anthony would start in left, but Duran got the call over Ceddanne Rafaela in center. That’s not an alignment that should continue, but it seems like they’re going to be sensible enough to keep playing Duran against righties. He’s 11-for-30 with seven extra-base hits and 11 RBI in eight games this month, and he’s hitting .289/.358/.498 against righties for the year.

Duran apparently needed this, since Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated before the game that Masataka Yoshida would DH and Roman Anthony would play left field on Wednesday, leaving open the question of where Duran will play. It’d be truly bizarre to leave Duran out of the lineup against a righty after starting him three out of four days against lefties. Yoshida might emerge as a useful DH, but Duran was one of the AL’s best players last year, and even though he’s slipped some this season, he’s still batting .285/.353/.480 against righties. Wilyer Abreu is the only healthy Red Sox player with a higher OPS versus righties this season.

It doesn’t come as a total surprise to see Duran on the bench against Rockies lefty Austin Gomber, especially given Ceddanne Rafaela’s remarkable turnaround at the plate in recent weeks. It’ll be lefty-masher Rob Refsnyder getting the nod in left field with Wilyer Abreu in the opposite corner and Roman Anthony at DH on Monday night at Fenway Park. Unheralded utility specialist Nate Eaton gets his third straight start in the leadoff spot with Marcelo Mayer on the bench for the third consecutive contest.

Executives who spoke to Stark suggest that the Red Sox don’t need to sell at the deadline as much as they need “to reconfigure the roster.” That means getting rid of some of the glut of players they have in the outfield. With Ceddanne Rafaela signed to a long-term deal and currently ranking inside the top 10 in WAR in the AL, he’s a lock to remain in Boston, as is top prospect Roman Anthony. Masataka Yoshida is set to come off the IL this week, but doesn’t have much trade value since he’s primarily a designated hitter, which means Duran and Wilyer Abreu remain the two names who could be traded. Abreu is younger and under team control for longer, plus he is coming off a Gold Glove season in right field, which makes Duran the most likely player to be dealt. If Duran is moved, his fantasy value could take a hit if he’s in a less hitter-friendly park or not leading off for his new team.

It’s the first time since June 8 that Duran has driven in anyone besides himself; he had two RBI on two solo homers in his previous 21 games. Duran has now collected hits in five straight games, with four of the six going for extra bases.

The 373-foot homer off Joe La Sorsa was his sixth of the season and his first off a left-hander. He’s obviously way off last year’s pace, but his exit velocity numbers haven’t changed much, and there’s still a chance he’ll reemerge as a top fantasy outfielder over the final three months.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora is going to keep shaking things up after his club snapped a six-game losing streak with Saturday’s decisive 15-1 drubbing of Toronto. It’s Romy González moving up to the leadoff spot to face lefty Eric Lauer with Duran shifting towards the bottom of the lineup card. The 28-year-old outfielder been mired in an extended slump, hitting .223/.293/.347 with one homer and three steals over his last 30 games. He’s posted a lackluster .547 OPS against left-handed pitching this season and could start to lose opportunities against southpaws in the coming weeks, especially if the Red Sox want to stay in playoff contention.

It was not Duran’s day. He lost a ball in the sun in the second, giving Randy Arozarena a double in advance of the Mariners scoring their only run of the game. At the plate, he hit the second-hardest ball of his career at 115.2 mph, but it was a lineout to center with an .850 xBA. He later had another lineout to first with a .610 xBA. He’s currently in a 1-for-19 slump over his last six games.

Duran took advantage of a misplay by Dom Canzone in the corner outfield and put his ever-so-impressive wheels to use. That’s already the eighth triple of the season for the 28-year-old, which puts him on pace for 17 in 2025. It’d be easy to say that number isn’t sustainable, but he’s coming off a 14-triple season in 2025, so, sure.

McAdam also makes it clear that the Red Sox are not shopping Duran around and are “not eager” to deal their former All-Star. However, multiple teams have reached out, and Boston is open to seeing if there’s a fit. Duran is 28 years old and under team control through the 2028 season, but he is highly unlikely to receive a contract extension from the Red Sox given his age and the young talent behind him. The Red Sox may feel the future construction of their team doesn’t include Duran and so moving him for an impact starting pitcher, first baseman, or MLB-ready prospects could make some sense.
