The 26-year-old southpaw did a nice job out of the Halos’ bullpen in 2025, registering a 3.96 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and an 80/25 K/BB ratio over 63 2/3 innings of work in 61 appearances. Ultimately, his ceiling is much higher for fantasy purposes if he’s pitching in the rotation as is his value to the Angels, so this seems like a win for everyone.

It’s an extremely positive update heading into the offseason after Detmers hit the injured list earlier this month. The 26-year-old former top prospect added that he would prefer to move back in to the rotation next season, but is open to staying in the bullpen where he blossomed into an excellent high-leverage specialist this season with a 3.96 ERA across 63 2/3 innings of work over 61 appearances.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 26-year-old southpaw, but since he’s already lost for the season due to inflammation in his pitching elbow, the Angels wanted to utilize his spot on their 40-man roster. We’re still awaiting the results of Detmer’s MRI exam to determine the severity of his injury. There should be more clarity on his status before the weekend is through.

Detmers was removed from Wednesday’s outing against the Twins due to discomfort. We still don’t have word yet on the results from his MRI exam, but it’s somewhat encouraging that it’s just being referred to as elbow inflammation at the moment. This will almost assuredly end the 26-year-old southpaw’s season. It’s a tough break as he finally established himself as a reliable bullpen arm this year, posting a 3.96 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and an 80/25 K/BB ratio across 63 2/3 innings of work.

Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery said afterwards that Detmers didn’t feel right and felt something in his forearm, which prompted his exit with a trainer. The 26-year-old former top prospect has blossomed into an excellent high-leverage specialist this season with a 3.96 ERA across 63 2/3 innings of work over 61 appearances. He’ll undergo a battery of tests, including an MRI, to determine the severity of the injury. An update on his status should come at some point later this week.

Detmers filled in for Kenley Jansen – who’d pitched three out of the last four days – and slammed the door shut on the Royals here. Of his last 13 outings, he’s held the opposing team scoreless and 12 of them and vaulted himself way up the pecking order in the Angels’ bullpen in the process.

Kenley Jansen was down today after working the previous two days and four of the previous five. Detmers made it look easy in his place, earning his second career save eight days after his first one. We still say he belongs in the rotation, but that’s probably not happening at any point this year. He’s pitched 11 scoreless innings with 18 strikeouts in his last 11 appearances.

Kenley Jansen was credited with the win after working a scoreless ninth in a tie game. We’d still much rather see Detmers in the rotation, but at least he’s made a nice contribution recently; he’s allowed one run and struck out 15 in his last 11 innings of work. His season ERA remains inflated at 6.04 after he allowed 12 runs in a three-appearance span from Apr. 30-May 7.

At least as far as Statcast is concerned, this might have been the single unluckiest outing by a pitcher this season. The hits off Detmers left bats at 84, 46 (a bunt single), 68, 108 and 66 mph. Julio Rodríguez delivered the one shot in there with a .760 xBA. The other four came in at .240, .260, .180 and .040. This actually might be a good thing for Detmers; the better he fares as a reliever, the more likely it is that the Angels will lock him into that role for the long haul. This took his ERA from 2.57 to 5.79.
