The 25-year-old has been sidelined since the start of June due to inflammation in his left hand. He had finally progressed to a minor league rehab assignment where he suffered an elbow injury while throwing a ball in from the outfield. It’s unclear how long this will set him back, but it’s very possible that he’ll miss the remainder of the season.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 25-year-old slugger, this was done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for the addition of Brice Matthews on Friday. Dezenzo is currently pain free as he continues to recover from a capsule sprain in his left hand. He has yet to resume hitting yet and will require a minor league rehab assignment once he’s ready for live action. He now won’t be eligible to rejoin the Astros until early August.

While that’s certainly good news, Brown didn’t give any indication of what that means for Dezenzo’s timeline, and we’ve seen Houston downplay a few injuries over the last two years that have lingered. The 25-year-old would likely require a short rehab assignment once he’s healthy enough, but it’s unclear if his .245/.321/.367 slash line is good enough to keep him on the MLB roster.

It sounds like Dezenzo might miss the entire month of June. That’s good news for Cam Smith and those rostering him. Dezenzo was batting .245/.321/.367 in 109 plate appearances before hurting his hand Saturday.

Dezenzo is going to get some extra time off after exiting Saturday’s game against the Rays with left hand discomfort. His absence creates an opportunity for Shay Whitcomb to play more often in the coming days.

Dezenzo’s homer tied the game in the seventh, and the offense kept rallying from there, scoring twice more in the inning. The Astros have to be thinking about sending Dezenzo down to play regularly after Yordan Alvarez comes off the IL, but he showed today why it’s tempting to keep him around. He just needs to play more than once or twice a week, and that’ll be hard to accomplish with Alvarez back, especially now that Cam Smith seems to have taken a step forward. Dezenzo’s homer was his second of the year. He’s batting .247/.330/.382 in 100 plate appearances.

Dezenzo had been out of the lineup two of the previous three games. The Astros could opt to send him down once they activate Yordan Alvarez, though Cesar Salazar is also an option. Really, though, both Dezenzo and Cam Smith ought to be playing regularly, and it’s not great for Dezenzo that it’s not happening even with Alvarez absent.

Dezenzo should be locked into the Houston lineup until Yordan Alvarez returns, making him at least a short-term option in mixed leagues. If he continues to heat up, he could overtake Cam Smith and last as a starting outfielder.

It’s difficult to read too much into the Astros’ lineup Sunday with Yordan Alvarez, Cam Smith and Chas McCormick on the bench. Still, Dezenzo seems to be getting more playing time lately and he rewarded the Astros’ faith Sunday with two hits and his first home run of the year. Dezenzo isn’t going to set the world on fire with his bat, but he’s up to a .283 average and could be an option in deeper formats if playing time continues to break his way.

This is Dezenzo’s fifth start in the team’s last six games. Chas McCormick and Jake Meyers don’t have the team’s confidence right now, so the Astros are turning to Dezenzo to see if he can get this offense going. The 24-year-old is hitting .270/.308/.324 on the season, but he does have an elevated 36 percent strikeout rate. Still, if he can provide an offensive spark, the Astros will continue to get him in the lineup, especially with Cam Smith starting to get reps in center field.

Zach Dezenzo jammed his right thumb on a slide during Monday’s series opener against the Blue Jays when he finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. It’ll be veteran Christian Walker back at first base on Tuesday night. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. He’s slated to undergo imaging that will determine the severity of the issue.

Dezenzo also drew a walk. The 24-year-old gave Christian Walker a break Monday, and held his own hitting at the bottom of the order. The 24-year-old isn’t getting enough time to suggest he’s worthy of fantasy adding, but there is a chance for some long-term success in keeper/dynasty formats.

He’s batting ninth versus the Angels. With Jose Altuve playing second base, the Astros have Cam Smith and Dezenzo in the same lineup for the first time this season. Dezenzo’s only previous three starts were among the four games that Smith hasn’t started.
