Emerson’s first ever MLB hit was a memorable one; a three-run blast that extended Seattle’s lead to 6-1 off Trevor Richards in the eighth inning. The 20-year-old is considered hit above power, but he’s added bulk and certainly has the bat speed to hit for power at the highest level. Emerson is likely to have some ups and downs as a 20-year-old, but there’s significant fantasy upside in his profile.

Emerson went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in his major-league debut against the Padres on Sunday night. He’ll get a chance to face White Sox rookie lefty Noah Schultz in his second big-league contest. The 20-year-old prodigy remains a work in progress at the plate, like most top prospects at his age, but he’s displayed one of the strongest hit tools in the minors over the past few years, while adding some additional over-the-fence power within the last year. He’s worthy of a speculative roster spot in all leagues based solely on his immense talent, but fantasy managers should keep expectations in check while he acclimates to everyday life in the majors.

Unfortunately, he was left on deck at the end of the game in the ninth. Emerson’s two balls in play were both flyouts to right hit just over 300 feet. His walk would have been overturned had the Padres challenged the 3-1 changeup Lucas Giolito threw him, but maybe he’d have gotten it on the next pitch anyway. Notably, the Mariners kept him at third base tonight after shortstop J.P. Crawford left the game following a HBP They clearly want him to settle in at the hot corner while Brendan Donovan is out.

The 20-year-old Emerson, who was hitting .255/.347/.469 with seven homers and 10 steals in 38 games for Tacoma, has been added to an updated Mariners lineup and will play third and bat ninth in his MLB debut Sunday night against the Padres. Leo Rivas was originally in that spot. With Brendan Donovan on the IL, the Mariners can just play Emerson at the hot corner for now. The team will have to think about him at shortstop later, though. Ideally, he’ll be in the majors for good, but that could change if he struggles during Donovan’s absence.

He isn’t currently in Sunday night’s lineup, and neither is Brendan Donovan. The 20-year-old Emerson was hitting .255/.347/.469 with seven homers and 10 steals in 38 games for Tacoma. 33 of his 38 starts had come at shortstop, with the rest at third base, so it will be interesting to see if the Mariners give him a chance to displace J.P. Crawford. For now, with Donovan limited, the easy move would be to play him at third most of the time. However, Emerson seems like a clear upgrade defensively at shortstop. Offensively, he might not be quite ready. He was striking out 27 percent of the time in Triple-A, and his exit velocity numbers were pretty average. He’s very likely to turn into a fine regular in time, but those in shallow leagues can probably ignore him for now.
