Espinal drew praise from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts earlier in camp and continues to fortify his case for a spot on Los Angeles’ season-opening roster as a utility infielder. The 31-year-old veteran fell out of favor with the Reds last year but has looked rejuvenated this spring. There’s a chance he beats out prospect Alex Freeland for a spot on the Dodgers bench, especially if he keeps tearing the cover off the ball.

Espinal came through with a run-scoring single off of Carson Seymour in the third inning that briefly tied the game at 2-2. He has the opportunity to compete for the team’s starting job at second base to open the season with Tommy Edman (ankle) heading to the injured list. It’s going to take a very strong camp for him to overcome Hyeseong Kim for that spot though.

The 31-year-old infielder hit an underwhelming .242/.292/.282 with zero home runs, 16 RBI, two stolen bases and a 38/21 K/BB ratio across 328 plate appearances with the Reds. Espinal will add infield depth for the Dodgers with Tommy Edman (ankle) slated to open the season on the injured list.

Espinal had been hitting second regularly since replace Matt McLain in that spot last month, but it seems to be over now. He’d hit just .183/.238/.225 in 76 plate appearances since the switch. The Reds have Gavin Lux batting second and Tyler Stephenson hitting cleanup tonight.

Espinal is a tough guy to downgrade from, but the Reds found a way. The utilityman had started 24 straight games since the second game of a doubleheader on Apr. 30. The first four of those saw him go 9-for-15 with five RBI. The last 20 saw him go 14-for-77 with two RBI. He’s hit .191/.255/.213 in 12 games since the Reds moved up him to the second spot in the lineup.
