Finnegan, returning from an adductor strain, struck out one and walked one before being lifted. No word yet on whether he’ll make one more rehab appearance or get activated this weekend.

Finnegan figures to be ready to rejoin Detroit’s high-leverage relief mix for the final week of the regular season and should be a full-go in time for the playoffs. The 34-year-old former Nationals closer reeled off 14 1/3 consecutive scoreless frames over 12 appearances for the Tigers after being acquired at the trade deadline prior to hitting the injured list back on September 1.

Finnegan’s return would help bolster Detroit’s high-leverage mix heading into the playoffs. The 34-year-old former Nationals stopper will likely need at least one or two minor league rehab outings before he’s cleared to return for the home stretch. He’s been out since early September recovering from an adductor strain.

Finnegan has been great for the Tigers, striking out 19 in 14 1/3 scoreless innings, so this is a significant loss. Will Vest figures to get most of Detroit’s save chances while Finnegan rests. Tommy Kahnle, who seems to have bounced back lately with his six consecutive scoreless appearances, also figures to have a bigger role at the end of games.

The injury occurred when Finnegan was warming up to potentially pitch in the late stages of Wednesday’s contest. The 33-year-old right-hander may need to undergo imaging to determine if there’s structural damage and a trip to the injured list is necessary. It would be a significant hit to Detroit’s bullpen as the former Nationals closer has been excellent since coming over at the trade deadline.

Finnegan appeared to be uncomfortable after completing a warmup pitch, and the right-hander exited the bullpen and went into the locker. This would be a significant loss for the Tigers as well as fantasy managers, as Finnegan has been excellent since the deal to Washington prior to the deadline.

Finnegan was called upon to bail out Drew Sommers in the seventh inning of this one after the left-hander issued a pair of walks to open the inning after the Tigers had just tied the game at 3-3. Finnegan came on and got Bobby Witt Jr. to ground into a double play before retiring Vinnie Pasquantino on a fly ball to left to end the threat. Finnegan has yet to allow a run through his first 10 2/3 innings with the Tigers while posting a 12/2 K/BB ratio, recording four saves in four chances and picking up a pair of victories.

Finnegan did allow a hit, but he was able to strike out a pair while picking up his 24th save of the 2025 campaign. Four of those have come since he was acquired by Detroit at the deadline, and he has yet to allow a run with a 10/1 K/BB ratio over his seven appearances with the Tigers.

Finnegan retired the Angels in order in the ninth inning while striking out two batters. The 33-year-old right-hander has now converted on all of his first three save chances with the Tigers. Manager AJ Hinch has used Finnegan for every save chance the Tigers have had since the trade deadline. That speaks to his place in the bullpen hierarchy ahead of Will Vest, who has lost all fantasy value as his chances for saves going forward are a long shot at best.

So far, so good. Finnegan has converted on each of his first two save chances with the Tigers. Will Vest didn’t pitch Monday and Tommy Kahnle merely got a couple outs in the eighth inning. Vest, though, was previously used before the ninth inning multiple times since the team acquired Finnegan. All signs currently point to Finnegan at least being the favorite for saves and potentially even being used as a traditional closer by A.J. Hinch.

Will Vest had taken the mound in the eighth inning with a four-run lead and surrendered two runs before Finnegan was summoned to get out of the frame and close out the game in the ninth. He recorded a clean four-out save for his first save in Detroit. Vest has now pitched before the ninth on two straight days, indicating Finnegan may be in line for most save chances down the stretch for the Tigers.

Finnegan adds to the Tigers’ bullpen after serving as the closer all year for the Nationals and picking up 18 saves. The question now is whether or not he’ll have that same role, as Will Vest has held his own in that stopper spot. Fantasy managers should wait-and-see, and be ready to pull the trigger if Finnegan moves to a high-leverage role that doesn’t see chances in the ninth inning.
