Gerber, 28, wasn’t pitching that well at the Triple-A level, registering a 5.40 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a 5/1 K/BB ratio over his five innings of work. He’ll work in a middle relief role for the Mets. Veteran right-hander Luis García was designated for assignment in a corresponding move on Sunday.

Gerber was designated for assignment on Monday, so the Rays were able to facilitate a trade for him instead of just outright losing him. The 28-year-old posted a 2.08 ERA in 4 1/3 innings for the Rays this season but had a 6.23 ERA in 43 1/3 innings at Triple-A. He’s just organizational depth for the Mets.
