Credit to Gil, but a lot of this was bad hitting. Gil’s velocity was actually down about 1.5 mph on his fastballs and 3.5 mph on his slider, and he ended up with just two strikeouts and three walks. He gave up eight hard-hit balls, but those produced one single and eight outs (one was a GIDP). Gil now has a 4.11 ERA and a 9/8 K/BB over 15 1/3 innings over three starts. He’ll face the Astros on Sunday, but he’s in line to be replaced in the Yankees rotation sometime next month.

Gil looked great early in this one. His fastball had life, his changeup was dancing, and his slider was nasty. Through four innings, the only run on his ledger came via a solo home run from Adam Frazier of all people. Then, things fell apart in the fifth. Logan O’Hoppe jumped all over a letter-high fastball to tack on another run before Gil walked Zach Neto on four pitches. Then, Mike Trout stepped to the plate and hit his third home run in as many days. The pitch was in his wheelhouse: low and center cut. All three of the home runs the Angels hit came against Gil’s fastball and it was an ugly finish to what felt like it could’ve been a promising outing. He’ll take a 7.00 ERA through two outings into a two-start week in Boston and Houston coming up.

This was Gil’s season debut and he did not look crisp. After being spotted a two-run lead in the top of the first, he gave it right back after a walking Jonathan Aranda with two outs – when he was up 1-2 on him – before Yandy Díaz sent a hanging slider into orbit. From there, practically every batter felt like a slog as Gil struggled to throw his fastball in the zone. He eventually opted for more sinkers, which he also struggled to command. He’ll have a chance to improve next time out against the Angels at home.

He’ll get the start against the Rays on Friday. Gil isn’t a must-trust in his first start of the season, but he’s a reasonable streaming option in deeper leagues against a Tampa Bay lineup that has scored just 4.58 runs per game in its first 12 outings.

Gil also walked four and struck out six, but threw only 47 of his 90 pitches for strikes. Command has always been an issue for Gil, and it seems to still be a lingering one. We know he’ll be moving into the rotation this week, but it’s hard to recommend starting him in most fantasy leagues.

Gil will make his season debut for New York after opening the season in the minors to get stretched out. The 27-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance in his young career, but is difficult to trust as more than a streamer. The Rays do present some potential rewards in that regard, however.

Gil will remain stretched out in the minors until the Yankees need a fifth starter, which will likely be at some point in mid-April. The 27-year-old’s strikeout potential makes him a viable streaming option in deeper mixed leagues but he’s extremely volatile from a control standpoint over the past calendar year.

We knew the Yankees were going to start the season with a four-man rotation because of the way their off-days were scheduled, so this isn’t a huge surprise. Gil will start in the minors so that he can remain stretched out. He had a fine enough spring, at least not walking many batters, but he is clearly the fifth starter in New York, which will be an issue for Gil when Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole return in April or May.

That means Luis Gil is the odd man out, at least for now. It’s unclear if he’ll remain back at the team’s spring training facility to keep working and stay stretched out as a starter or if he’ll head north with the team and operate in a long relief role out of the bullpen for the time being. Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers will start the club’s first four games.

Gil struck out seven opposing batters on the night while issuing only one base on balls. The lone hit that he allowed was a ground-rule double off the bat of Pete Alonso in the fourth inning. Gil got nine swings and misses on 69 pitches on the evening, posting a CSW of 26 percent. He finishes the spring with a 4.66 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 24/5 K/BB ratio over 19 1/3 innings in his six starts.

Gil walked one and struck out two in the contest. Most of the damage done against him came via the long ball, serving up a three-run homer to Spencer Torkelson in the first, a two-run blast to Matt Vierling in the second and a solo shot to Riley Greene in the third. Gil got eight whiffs on 68 pitches on the afternoon, posting a CSW of 29 percent. He now sports an unsightly 6.28 ERA and 1.60 WHIP across 14 1/3 innings through five spring starts.

Gil’s own error on a pickoff throw led to the unearned run. Still, he had another fine outing, which included working around an error in the first and starting a double play to end the second. He’s not promised anything in the long run, but he should certainly be locked into the Yankees’ season-opening rotation with his 2.38 ERA and 15/3 K/BB in 11 1/3 innings to date.

Gil’s fastball averaged 95.7 and peaked at 97, in line with his 2025 averages. He’ll likely enter the season in the rotation, but is one of the prime candidates to get bumped when Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon return. Still, he does have a bit of a runway here -- perhaps he’ll get back enough of his 2024 form to force the Yankees to evaluate other plans when Cole and Rodon are ready. Gil’s now at a 2.25 ERA in three Grapefruit League starts, striking out 11 in eight innings.

Gil’s mound performance was fine, but his showing today will be remembered for the head taps. He challenged a clear ball in the first inning, which cost the Yankees their second and final challenge for the day after a batter had already had a strike confirmed in the top of the inning. Nevertheless, Gil again tried challenging a pitch in the second, only to be informed that he couldn’t do so.

Gil walked none and threw 33 of his 48 pitches for strikes, so the Yankees have to like that. Gil’s rotation status shouldn’t be in question at the beginning of the season, but he could be threatened once Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole are ready to return. So, for him, the competition with the likes of Will Warren and Ryan Weathers should really begin on Opening Day.

Gil, who debuted for the Yankees in 2021 three years before winning AL Rookie of the Year, was a first-time arbitration eligible after posting a 3.32 ERA in 11 starts last season. He, of course, missed much of the season with a lat strain. The Yankees seem rather down on him now, but he’ll have a rotation spot initially. He just might be vulnerable to getting demoted when either Carlos Rodón or Gerrit Cole returns.

Gil struck out two batters on the afternoon and didn’t allow a base on balls. All of the damage done against him came via the long ball as he served up a solo shot to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the opening inning and another to Alejandro Kirk in the second. The 27-year-old hurler got eight whiffs on 48 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of only 19 percent. With his limited workload in this one, it’s possible that Gil could resurface out of the bullpen later in the series depending on how long the Yankees can push it.

Gil, is slated to take the ball for Game 1 of the best-of-five series opener in Toronto, is the lone change for New York from their Wild Card Series roster. The 27-year-old starter takes over reliever Mark Leiter Jr.'s roster spot.

Gil went 4-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 11 starts down the stretch after returning from a lat injury. The 27-year-old faced the Blue Jays one time in early September and emerged victorious, allowing just one run on three hits and four walks over his six frames. He’ll start opposite Blue Jays veteran Kevin Gausman. It’ll be Max Fried taking the ball for Game 2 of the series.

Gil allowed two homers, one of which was a 355-foot fly from Gunnar Henderson that would have been out of only Yankee Stadium and Steinbrenner Field. It was a solid final showing as he tries to make himself a candidate for a potential ALDS roster. In spite of a 4-1 record and a 3.32 ERA in 11 starts since returning from a lat injury, he’ll be left off the Wild Card squad after throwing 79 pitches today.

The 27-year-old right-hander issued a pair of walks in the contest while recording three strikeouts. He twirled five scoreless frames to start the game before allowing a one-out single to Kyle Teel and a two-run blast to Colson Montgomery in the sixth inning. Gil got just three whiffs on 89 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll bring a 3.29 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and a 39/31 K/BB ratio (52 innings) into his final start of the regular season on Sunday against the Orioles.

Although he entered the fifth with a 7-2 lead, Gil couldn’t secure a win tonight, giving up four singles and a walk before being replaced with two outs. Fortunately, Fernando Cruz was able to retire Royce Lewis then and prevent further damage to Gil’s ERA. Gil struck out just two and gave up 12 hard-hit balls, so he probably deserved worse. Still, at 4-1 with a 3.33 ERA in nine starts, he’s been pretty good for the most part, and he should be fine to use against the White Sox next week.

Gil gave up zero hits, walked four and struck out four. After missing as much time as he did earlier this season, a no-hitter isn’t even on the table for Gil. The 27-year-old right-hander was removed after 93 pitches despite six no-hit innings against the Red Sox. Gil extended his streak of starts with two runs or less allowed to seven and has a 2.83 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings since returning to the mound. He’s lined up to face the Twins on the road next week.

Gil’s outing ended with a 106-minute rain delay, but at 90 pitches, he was probably done anyway. He actually struck out just one and walked four today, but the Blue Jays were only 1-for-7 against him with RISP, with that one hit resulting in Bo Bichette getting thrown out at home. Gil is 3-1 with a 3.31 ERA. He’ll make his next start in Fenway against the Red Sox.

Since struggling four weeks ago in his season debut, Gil has made five starts in which he’s allowed one or two runs over five or 5 1/3 innings. The Yankees will be happy if he keeps it going next weekend against the Blue Jays.

Gil surrendered five hits, walked four and struck out five in the 92-pitch outing. He’s given up a total of five earned runs in four starts since allowing five runs in a loss to the Marlins in his return from the IL at the beginning of the month. Next up should be a start Sunday against the White Sox, unless maybe the Yankees add a spot starter to give some guys extra rest.

Gil struggled with his command and issued five walks in the ballgame while striking out three opposing hitters. The Red Sox scratched out an unearned run against him in the second inning as the Yankees made three errors in the inning, then Nathaniel Lowe added on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Gil got six whiffs on 93 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll try to get back in the win column as he carries a 4.26 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and a 17/13 K/BB ratio (19 innings) into Tuesday’s battle against the Nationals.

Gil gave up four hits, walked three and struck out four. The 27-year-old right-hander has had consecutive starts with two runs or less and at least five innings pitched. Gil has 11 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings over his last two starts. He’s done enough to be relevant in mixed leagues at this point. He’s lined up to face the Rays on the road next week.
