The Rays didn’t like Guerrero enough to claim him off waivers last week, but now that he’s passed through waivers and is off the 40-man, they were interested. According to Cotillo, it’s not a cash deal and the Red Sox will get a player back.

It’s pretty surprising that an arm like Guerrero’s made it through waivers. The 25-year-old might not make it in the majors because of his control issues, but he throws 97 mph, has a nice minor league track record and still has two option years left. It might be that his elbow problems scared teams off. He’ll stick with the Red Sox and, assuming he’s healthy, get an invitation to spring training.

Guerrero, 25, has nice swing-and-miss potential, but he just hasn’t shown he can throw enough strikes to make an impact. He had a 4.15 ERA in 17 1/3 innings as a rookie for the Red Sox last season, but that came with a hideous 10/14 K/BB. Even in the minors, he walked 26 in 31 innings. Despite that, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll clear waivers, especially since he has a couple of option years remaining.

The procedural move frees up a spot on Boston’s 40-man roster. The 24-year-old rookie right-hander is basically done for the season with a right elbow strain. Technically, he could return in late September, but that appears unlikely.

The severity of the injury, as well as how much time Guerrero may stand to miss, are not yet known. The 24-year-old hurler has posted a 4.15 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 10/14 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings out of the Red Sox’ bullpen this season. Chris Murphy returned from the injured list to take Guerrero’s spot in the team’s bullpen on Saturday.

Guerrero returns to Boston’s bullpen mix ahead of Sunday’s game against Atlanta. The 24-year-old has allowed just one run over 5 1/3 innings (four appearances) this season in the big leagues. He figures to stick around for a while given his potential to emerge as one of the better arms in the Red Sox bullpen.

Guerrero winds up sticking around for just the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Orioles during his latest stint with the Red Sox. He allowed one run over 1 1/3 innings on Saturday night and holds a 1.69 ERA across 5 1/3 innings (four appearances) this season overall.

The hard-throwing 24-year-old has allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 10 1/3 innings at Triple-A this year while striking out just seven batters and walking five. The Red Sox needed a fresh arm in the bullpen, so they’ll see if Guerrero can figure it out after posting a 3.31 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 79/32 K/BB ratio in 54 1/3 innings last year.
