Garrett had the surgery Wednesday. He posted a 3.90 ERA in 58 appearances this season before landing on the IL in mid-September. The Mets could choose to non-tender him and perhaps try to re-sign him to a two-year minor league deal this winter.

The move was retroactive to Monday. Garrett has been fine for the Mets this season, posting a 3.90 ERA and 64/26 K/BB ratio in 55 1/3 innings. There is no word yet on the timeline for his return, but he had previously missed a few weeks with a similar elbow injury in August, so he may be facing an extended absence.

Garrett has been sidelined since August 23 due to inflammation in his pitching elbow. It seems like he has made a quick recovery though and may only require a couple of appearances on his rehab assignment before he’s cleared to rejoin the Mets’ bullpen.

Frankie Montas, who has been lit up for 12 runs over just 8 1/3 innings in his last two starts, will make a bulk relief appearance in this one. It’s probably a smart idea for the Mets considering the Brewers are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now.

The Mets leaned on Garrett to get their final six outs after Edwin Díaz had just saved their last two games. It was a tense couple of innings in a one run game where there had already been seven homers hit by the two teams combined, but Garrett was nails. He’s had a rough month after being one of the most effective relievers in baseball through the first chunk of the season and should continue to be a steady source of holds as Díaz’s primary setup man.

The 32-year-old right-hander drew his second save opportunity in the past three days with Edwin Díaz having worked the day in-between. Once again, Garrett came through with flying colors, allowing just a one-out walk to Mike Tauchman. He ultimately struck out Andrew Benintendi on a swinging third strike to end the ballgame. The veteran hurler has been a spectacular weapon out of the Mets’ bullpen this season, compiling a 0.76 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a 26/13 K/BB ratio across 23 2/3 innings.

Edwin Díaz slammed the door on the Dodgers on Saturday night so it was Garrett’s turn to handle the ninth inning on Sunday evening. He made things somewhat interesting by allowing a one-out single to Max Muncy, but battled back to get Andy Pages to hit into a fielder’s choice and then punched out Michael Conforto to end it. On the season, the 32-year-old right-hander has registered a minuscule 0.86 ERA, 1,24 WHIP and a 22/12 K/BB ratio across 21 1/3 innings to go along with one save. He’s not going to usurp the closer’s role from Díaz, but Garrett has proven to be a capable fill-in when he has been called upon.
