The versatile 29-year-old drove in a run with an RBI single in the seventh inning that pulled the Red Sox to within a run at 4-3. That would be as close as they would get. After reaching base safely in all four of his plate appearances on Sunday, Gonzalez is slashing an impressive .308/.346/.492 with nine homers and 51 RBI in 324 plate appearances on the season.

Both veterans were originally meant to be short-side platoon players for the Red Sox, but have been thrust into larger roles with injuries to Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, and Marcelo Mayer. Refsnyder has hit .265 in 11 games this month with two home runs and seven RBI, while Gonzalez has hit .340 in 12 games in September with one home run and seven RBI. David Hamilton will start at second base and Nate Eaton will start in right field on Thursday.

Gonzalez has not been able to play since leaving Tuesday’s contest with soreness in his left knee. The 29-year-old infielder will miss at least the start of Friday’s game with David Hamilton once again handling second base in Gonzalez’s absence.

Gonzalez left Tuesday’s game due to soreness in his left knee, and it appears he’ll miss at least one more contest with the issue. David Hamilton will get the start at second base with Gonzalez unavailable to begin Wednesday’s affair.

Gonzalez, who has been playing second against righties of late, was at first base versus a lefty tonight. Nathaniel Lowe replaced him in the contest. Hopefully, it’s just a day-to-day thing for Gonzalez, who homered and doubled before departing.

Gonzalez played first base in the first three of those games with Nathaniel Lowe on paternity leave. Now he’s at second, where it seemed like David Hamilton was getting an opportunity last week. Gonzalez is 9-for-21 over his last five games, though that’s with no extra-base hits or walks. Mostly a platoon player previously, he’s hitting a fine .296/.335/.494 overall this season.

All Gonzalez does is hit. Usually part of Boston’s fleet of right-handed mercenaries to hammer left-handed pitchers, Gonzalez drew his second straight start against a righty and smoked two doubles off Michael Wacha. He hit each at least 102 mph and could finally be boxing out Abraham Toro for the starting spot at first base. Perhaps this was just a matchup based decision though, since Wacha’s best pitch is his changeup and it works better against lefty hitters than righties. Still, Gonzalez has elite bat speed, very real power, and has been highly productive this season in his platoon-based role.

Gonzalez finds himself in the leadoff spot for the second time in the past three games with Boston facing another left-hander in Royals southpaw Bailey Falter. The other wrinkles here are outstanding rookie Roman Anthony remaining in the third spot in the order and Jarren Duran batting seventh instead of being relegated to the bench.

Gonzalez’s homer off Seth Halvorsen was hit 368 feet to left. He earlier had a 409-foot flyout that would have been a homer in 20 ballparks. This was Boston’s first game with Gonzalez in the lineup and Abraham Toro out of it against a right-hander since Gonzalez came off the IL on June 2, so perhaps the tide is starting to turn. Gonzalez will be of interest in mixed leagues if the Red Sox start to play him regularly. He’s batting an incredible .338/.372/.603 in 148 plate appearances.

Gonzalez crushed a Ryan Rolison pitch 111.1 mph over the Green Monster and out of Fenway Park, and his other two balls in play were 106.9 mph and 103.6 mph. He has a ridiculous 59.6 percent hard-hit rate this season; the only hitter with 50 plate appearances doing better is Shohei Ohtani at 60.2 percent. Also, his strikeout rate is also down to 23.6 percent from 26.9 percent in his first season with the Red Sox and 36.0 percent during his White Sox career. He certainly wouldn’t maintain his current .923 OPS while playing regularly against righties, but he deserves a shot to show what he can do outside of a platoon role.

Gonzalez got the start at second base on Saturday against lefty Mitchell Parker. The 28-year-old infielder continues to hit left-handed pitching, adding three hits, including two doubles, to score twice and drive in two runs for the Red Sox in their blowout win over the Nationals. Gonzalez is slashing .317/.354/.533 with three homers and 23 RBI Across 130 plate appearances.

The homer did come off a left-handed reliever, Mason Fluharty. Still, González deserves more time that he’s been getting; this was just the second time he’s started against a righty since coming off the IL on June 2. He’s batting .308/.353/.514 in 116 plate appearances this season, and with his ability to contribute on the basepaths, he’d be interesting in deeper leagues if given an expanded role.

The homer off Ryan Yarbrough was his first in 22 games this season. Gonzalez is 7-for-18 with six RBI in five games (three starts) since coming off the injured list Monday. He’d seem to us to be the better first base option than Abraham Toro, not that either would make for a good long-term choice.

Gonzalez had just taken over as Boston’s primary first baseman when he got hurt last month, but he’ll probably take a backseat to Abraham Toro against righties for now and go back to getting most of his starts versus lefties. On the plus side, the Red Sox are facing lefties each of the next two days. Gonzalez is starting and batting fifth tonight. Toro is playing third base over Marcelo Mayer.

Gonzalez should help stabilize Boston’s first base situation, but Nick Sogard deserves some credit for how he’s come up and performed of late. The 28-year-old should be ready to make it back from a quad issue at some point next week.

Gonzalez had emerged as the team’s starting first baseman after Triston Casas was lost for the season with a knee injury. However, Gonzales got hurt himself and has been on the IL with a deep quad bruise since May 10. In that time, Abraham Toro has emerged as an impactful corner infield bat for the Red Sox, and Kristian Campbell has started taking pre-game reps at first base. It’s unclear what kind of role Gonzalez would return to when he does return.

No, Roman Anthony isn’t being called up as the corresponding move. Gonzalez will require a couple extra days off after hurting his quad earlier this week when he collided with Rangers first baseman Josh Smith. It’ll be Abraham Toro and Nick Sogard filling the void at the cold corner for now.

Cora noted specifically that Romy Gonzalez and Rob Refsnyder are a bit banged up and each of them could require a trip to the injured list. It’s unclear what that potential move or moves could be, though fantasy managers are obviously clamoring for Roman Anthony to somehow get promoted to join the big league roster. Stay tuned.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters Gonzalez’s back tightened up on him following a scary-looking collision with Rangers infielder Josh Smith at the first-base bag during the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game. The encouraging news is that he appears to have avoided serious injury, but might need some extra time off to rest and recover over the next few days.

Gonzalez was lifted from Wednesday’s game at Fenway Park following a nasty collision with Rangers first baseman Josh Smith while trying to beat out an infield single in the sixth inning. The positive news here is that both players were able to get back on their feet with Smith staying in the contest. Gonzalez, who was replaced by Abraham Toro at the cold corner to open the seventh inning, will undergo further evaluation and there should be an update on his status following the game.

González has hit .367/.375/.533 in 32 plate appearances against righties this season, and he doesn’t need a day off when the Red Sox didn’t play Monday. Still, Alex Cora thought it was time for Toro to make his debut. The switch-hitting Toro has a .651 OPS against righties and a .601 OPS against lefties through 366 big-league games.

Gonzalez will get the start at the hot corner with Alex Bregman on the paternity list. The 28-year-old will likely see most of the time at third base until Bregman is back in a couple days.
